Do any banks offer free checking anymore?

I have free checking at a pretty big bank in the northeast, so it definitely does exist!

Me too. I get free checking & get reimbursed any ATM fees at the end of the month. For the free checking all I needed was direct deposit.

I'm liking the looks of USAA, but Im having trouble trying to see if there is a location in or near me. The only thing I can find on their site is the TX location.

I was able to join because my first husband was in the military, even though I have since re-married. I found that strange, but welcomed. I am near Ft. Campbell, KY so hopefully there will be a location close to there. I don't need to drive to the bank often, just the occasional odd deposit. Everything else will be done online. I'm going to verify that there is somewhere I can make a deposit at though before I fund this account.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

EDIT: It appears that I deposit/withdraw at their Financial Centers (ATM's?) of which there are a lot of them near me. Does this sound right. Sorry for all the questions, I guess Im way behind the times in not having a bank account in so many years.

USAA doesn't have an branches. They are a remote/internet based bank. You use local ATMs and they reimburse you any fees.

We have 3 checking accounts(2 are holding to transfer to other things) and all are free. Our main one is at Wells Fargo and I don't remember what the conditions are for that one to be free. Maybe direct deposit? If I quit my little second job I won't have an option of doing direct deposit since both my DH and my jobs don't offer it. The other 2 are at ING and a local CU.

They dont have there "own" ATM's, you can use any atm you want and they will re-emberse you any fee (I think up to $25 a month) the other bank charges for using the atm. I dont do it but I'v seen thim advertise the fact you can put money in your account by taking a PIC of it with your phone and sening it to thim. I use the free envolopes they have, self addressed and stamped. Now if you put a lot of chash in your accounts USAA may not be the best choice for you.

they dont have local branches they expect you to use the enternet, they even have free bill pay and stuff all over the enternet, I have gotton several car loans from thim all on line, in fact they will usually say your pre=approved before you even apply. I had my home morgage through thim and I did have to show up localy to sign the paper work, cant rember were I went it was some local buisness maybe a bank I cant rember.

Yes, USAA does offer that service -- using your iPhone or Android device, you can make deposits right over the phone. However, you must first either hold a USAA credit card or submit to a credit check.

For those curious, you can also make deposits to your USAA account at all "The UPS Store" locations.

I have Bank of America and have never paid for any of my accounts.
