DME with carry on only

You're both babies!! Make-up? Not an issue for me. I'm older than both of you! This old face gets eyeliner/mascara. That's it. My 3-1-1 bag has mascara, lip balm, hand sanitizer, hand cream, travel size shampoo and body wash, small toothpaste. My carry on bag has my travel documents/plans, a book, my phone and charger, snacks, oversized tee shirt, and a change of clothes. Why? The one time I didn't pack that bag this way, I was flying home and figured, heck I'm going home. I won't need that stuff if my checked bag goes somewhere else. Well...that was the one time our flight couldn't land in RI, had to land in Philly. We could get off the plane, get a room for the night (NYE too boot!!) and fly out the next morning...but no bags were being taken off the plane. Or, we could return to FtL, get our bags there, and fly out in the morning. I had nothing in my carry on bag for an overnight!! So, back we went! I won't make that mistake ever again. My carry on will have anything I might need for the next 24hrs.

Only on the DIS do we compete for "oldest fart on the thread"

We can't do carry on only, as we deal with mobility issues so getting our bodies on the plane is enough. :P~

I spoke with DME a few weeks ago for a friend who had missed her flight due to long security lines, but her checked bags made her original flight. DME said it wasn't a problem, they pull all the bags with yellow tags and the bags would get to her room just fine. The DME rep also didn't make note of my friend's new flight, which was 3 hours later, saying knowing it was same day was enough.

Yeah, as long as you have a Resort Reservation that the ME staff can access when they scan your MB, or look up your name if you have no MB, then you can get on the bus. I'm really prone to changing our flights all over the place and often don't get the info to DME but it's never an issue. One time they showed the wrong resort but all I had to do was tell them that was old info and they were able to find the correct reservation and get us on the correct bus.

I don't know but people take so much stuff with them. Monorailsilver's list is scary long with electronics. I take my phone & sometimes a small tablet. I can pack 24 hrs worth of stuff for 3 people in 1 small carry on. Heck, except for sunscreen, I can pack a weeks worth of liquids for my whole family in 1 311 bag. Maybe I need to start bringing more stuff
I don't even bother with a 311 bag because my toiletries bag alone weighs close to 5lbs.
Even DH's toiletries bag weighs 3lbs.

My point is we don't need a 311 bag each. One bag for the whole crew is plenty. Of course I don't take special shampoos/conditioners/moisturizers/gels etc. And I hoard travel size samples of everything imaginable. IMHO people take too much stuff. We pack lean and mean - 3 people - 1 26" rolling duffle checked - 1 small carry on and my big hobo bag for a week.
To each his or her own. I am on vacation. I don't want to do laundry on vacation. There isn't a right or wrong. You're not wrong for bringing the bare minimum and others aren't wrong for bringing a lot.

See it pays to be old! I have never been a clothes horse of any kind. My poor DD has to drag me to the store or I'd never buy anything. I'll pack 3 bottoms & 7 tops for a week, undies, pjs and an extra pair of flip flops. It really does fit in a carry on! Makeup consists of a little foundation, bronzer, blush, eyeliner & mascara, fits in a very tiny bag!! I'm afraid I gave up style for comfort a long time ago. I do envy those who always look put together, just have never managed to be one!!
My wardrobe is quite comfortable and stylish as well. The two can go hand in hand. It doesn't take that much effort. But again to each his or her own...

And truly I envy you. I am presentable and clean but have never been able to attain fashionable and I have TRIED!! No need to take a lot of stuff as it won't help the cause!! Oh well my grandchildren love me anyway! ;-)

But now I gotta ask, DH's toiletries consist of a solid deodorant, a can of shaving cream (travel size will last the week), razor and his tooth brush. What's in your DH's?

Let's see, going from memory...
His has his shampoo, his body wash (we don't use soap except hand soap)/loofah (or whatever you call that thing made of netting material), his deodorant, his razor with a few extra blades, shaving cream, a small bottle of moisturizing lotion, his cologne (or after shave, I don't remember which), his toothpaste/toothbrush, qtips, fingernailclippers/tweezers, comb/brush (yes even with very short hair he still wants a brush!). Honestly, I am sure there are a few other items in there that I have forgotten about.
Yes, many of those things don't need to go in the 311 bag but it is easier *for us* to have everything in the same place for getting ready. And even then the liquids still would be tough to fit in a bag. We use certain brands and they aren't available in those teeny sizes. While I don't carry huge sizes, I don't like cutting it too close.
My last trip was 2 weeks, I use a LOT of stuff over the course of two weeks. DH traveled 150+ days for work last year...sometimes 3 weeks at a stretch before coming home. We live by the motto...."be prepared!" :)

And my DH says WDW isn't a third world country, which is why I do all the packing! He'd leave what little he needs home and buy it at the Gift Shop?!?!?

No, it's not....
But the gift shop has VERY limited choices and RIDICULOUS prices. As I said, we use particular brands, not always easily available. And *we* would rather spend our money on *better* things at Disney, like Dole Whips and Mickey pretzels than waste money on things that we feel can EASILY be brought from home. To each his or her own! :)

And that's what I tell him!!! $10 for something I have at home for nothing???????

Decant decant decant! 3.4oz/100 ml isn't tiny, though "travel size" products generally are because they are often barely 2oz.

I buy 100 ml containers and decant my faves into them!

My aveda curl stuff is a 3.4 oz container naturally but someone looking for a "travel size" would never realize it was only 100 ml.

We live by the motto...."be prepared!" :)

What happens if your checked bag and all those items is delayed or disappears?

Most of the items listed don't have to go in a 311 bag and it would be interesting to see what you could decant. I personally would do it at home then see how much I actually use in a vacation-time period.

Could keep the Baggie in the toiletry kit; take it out for tsa and plop it right back in. :)

Just as an amusing side note to this discussion, my DD lives in Kissimmee and works for Universal Studios. God love her, she lets me come down pretty much whenever I want/need to. I "pay" her in toiletries. Coupon & sales fanatic that I am, I get the stuff for waaaay less than she would. Last trip, I had 30 bottles of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, facial scrub, toothpaste, etc. in my checked bag. Of course TSA opened THAT bag. I can only imagine how nuts they thought I was!!!

I have a feeling that will be my dd when she gets to WDW in the fall!!!

With my hair (length/thickness) 3.4 oz of shampoo and conditioner would not last 2 weeks...maybe barely a week. I have tried.
The way my toiletry kit is designed, it would not be conducive to putting items in a ziploc. My bag has several compartments for organization and it works WONDERFULLY for me. Keeps things neat and organized and I can see exactly where everything is and goes as I pack bathroom items back up so I don't forget anything.
As far as lost luggage, thus far I have only ever had a bag delayed once by the airline that I recall and that was coming home AND it was my suitcase full of all of my brand new WDW souvenirs!!! The airline knew where the bag was. It got put on the flight departing right after us from MCO. So I could either wait at my home airport for it (uh, no thanks!!!) Or they would deliver it to me within 24 hours! I got it about 12 hours later. That was fine with me. I haven't done anything but a direct (plane stopped but I didn't get off, and only 2 or maybe 3 of those! I go for nonstops!) in over 25 years, so my chances of lost luggage are small. And if by chance it happened, I would have to deal. But I haven't had that happen. I need my carry on space for more important items...valuables that should not be checked, breakables, etc...
Funny, I have tons of stuff in my purse like a mini hairspray, hand lotion, body spray, blistex, extra make up...all loose in my bag and no one at any airport has ever said a word at all!

Seriously guys? Not every method is going to work for every person. If you want to use just carry on bags, fine. If you want to board the plane, with no bags, fine, check your bags.
I think that sometimes we tend to get a bit defensive of our chosen method. I have varying needs, depending on what kind of trip I'm taking. My trip in Sept, over Labor Day? Well, we're flying SW. Why? Those two free checked bags. There are three of us going, and we'll have 6 bags. My dd is moving to Orlando, to start the DCP. She is going to pack up a bunch of suitcases with her stuff. Dh and I will need just two of that six!!!

I can usually get away with a carry on bag for a stay of less than 5 nights. I do laundry...but not everyone wants to do that. I have an Owners Locker...full sized toiletries are in there, waiting to be delivered to my WDW resort (as well as many other things I like to have, but hate carrying with me!!). It's all about preferences....what works for me, might not work for you. Simple as that.

I didn't see anyone getting defensive.... I thought we were having an amicable discussion why we did what we did. I didn't see anyone saying anyone else's way way wrong.
As I posted earlier to each his or her own...

Having an owners lockers does totally change things. I would pack way less with one that is for sure

I like it when you see the yellow tags on backpacks that were obviously "personal items" on the plane.

If I have leftover yellow tags I do put them on our carry on: I travel with two cognitively challenged DS and w/out DH (so there's alot to pay attention to for me), and figure its a bit of insurance in case one of us leaves a bag behind on the plane or at an airport. (We also have name tags inside every bag.) I bet everyone who works at MCO - and probably most major airports - knows what those yellow tags mean, so I figure it can't hurt.
