DME then rental car--am I bonkers?

Just trying to figure out a way that I could take the DME when I arrive and rent a car a couple of days later (I know we'll need one for my mom's comfort--we're flying in separately) from a site on or very near WDW--is there such a thing- ? Pls. include details.

or should I just bite the bullet and get the car rental at MCO when I arrive?

I don't have an exhaustive list, but I know you can rent National at the Dolphin and the Car Care Center (they will pick you up at your resort and take you to the rental place, but you must pre-arrange it). You can rent Dollar at the Regal Sun Resort, which is just across the street from the DTD bus depot.

The Alamo/National counter at the Dolphin is very convenient if you plan on picking your car up on either a DHS or Epcot day. The counter does close at 4pm but you can do the paperwork and then return later and hand the key to the valet people and they will bring your car around. That's what we did.
The Car Care Center, over by the entrance to the MK, is also Alamo/National, but they do offer shuttle service. But, that does have to be booked in advance...the night before in most cases.
Budget is located at the Doubletree in DTD. They also will send a car to pick you up and bring you to their office, then you take your car from there.

Hertz has a desk at SOG and they came and picked me up and dropped me back off. Many of the agencies will do this for you.

There is an Avis at the Hilton in DTD and a Dollar in the Regal Sun. Both of these are very short and easy walks from DTD, and if you don't want to walk, I belive Dollar will pick you up. Keep in mind, you could rent a car at Disney and drop it off at the airport for your return trip home.

NO you are not bonkers. We do it all the time. We usually rent from Avis which is at the Hilton hotel. Like a PP said it is a very short walk from DTD. Just don't forget when you check in to the resort to get a parking pass.
