I'm nervous about lettting DME pick up my luggage. I am considereing picking it up myself and taking it on the bus with me. I think for peace of mind I would like to be assured my luggage has not been lost. Has anyone else done this?

I also wanted to due this. Everyone thinks i'm crazy, but i'm just a control freak.

Well, given the probably thousands of Guests who've already used DME, I haven't heard ONE report of a bag lost because of/by DME. I did see one report recently where the airline lost a suitcase, but that's been it.

I;m not as concerned with the bags getting lost as I am with them taking forever to get to the room. We land at 10:45 and will prolly spend the day at the pool before heading over to AKL for at 5:15 for dinner. I just want someone to make sure we have our bags at 4:15 so we can shower and have all the stuff we need to get ready but no one will even give me an est time for the bags to arrive. Having only 3 nights/4 days I really dont want to spend one day roughing it without luggage.

I absolutely won't go to baggage claim at the Orlando Int'l. I love the idea of not having to handle our lugguge from the time we check in at our home airport until we get to the room -- with Disney even taking care of the bell service gratuity!

To me, using Magical Express as designed is much more appealling than having to wait for our luggage and having to handle it at the airport and at the resort. The "behind the scenes" luggage handling is the best feature of Magical Express!

We'll go from our arrival gate directly to the Disney Welcome Center. It's likely that we'll be on a motor coach to our resort while others on our flight are still waiting around for the luggage to be unloaded.

After we check in at the resort, we can immediately go off and have fun.

Our luggage will show up in our room some time after we check in; it could be a few minutes, or it could be a few hours, but it will be there when we get back.

We'll have a small carry-on bag with anything we need right away. (That's always a good idea when you check bags with an airline.)

We had a great experience with ME. I think our bags beat us to the resort. (And we were checking in less than 1.5 hours after landing.) While we were checking in at CSR, the CM said "oh, it looks like your bags are in a Rancho room and it shows you requested Cabanas." They ended up moving our bags to our Cabana room (after a little wrangling with the check in CM).

I loved not having to go to baggage claim. We had swimsuits, sleepwear, and a change of clothes, etc. in our carry on -- that's a rule no matter what!

I agree with the line, "that's a rule no matter what!"

In the early weeks of DME, when luggage sometimes took 6 hours or even longer to "magically" appear in the resort room, DME still got favorable reviews on this board from folks who brought a carry-on with essential items.

But folks who expected to have immediate access to their luggage upon reaching their resort room gave DME very unfavorable reviews.

Even if you're renting a car or taking a towncar, it's always a good idea to bring a carry-on with a change of clothes, valuables, and any medications. Airlines sometimes load a bag onto the wrong plane (although that's less common with the barcoded tags today than with the old handwritten tags), or a bag doesn't make it to the flight before departure. Always assume there's a small chance you won't see your luggage for 24 hours.

We plan to do this. It doesn't really add any time for us. By the time we head to the bathroom and then stroll down to baggage claim, our bags are always there on the conveyor so it's easy to go ahead and get our bags, then head over to the DME counter to wait for our bus. I'd rather know my bags were with me than finding out later that they're delayed or lost.

I am also still up in the air about this. I was planning on getting my own luggage but the thought of not having to deal with it really sounds nice too.
They don't get upset if someone gets their own luggage.. Do they?

Nope... they didn't with us. We got in at 6:30 pm and the last thing that I wanted was to wait for lugguage when all that I wanted to do was unpack, have dinner and go to bed for an early day the next morning. For anyone flying SW, it is SO easy to get your own luggage it is crazy. Literally we walked a few hundred feet with our bags with an elevator ride in between. I think that we will always do this. I want to know AT the airport if there are any problems with my luggage, not hours later, far away from the people responsible.

Thanks so much for posting this because it is excatly what we are going to do (I too am a contorl freak, obsessive nut who couldn't relax without her bags, as you already know from my AAA thread :rolleyes1 ) and I too am flying SW, so this is very reasuring

I had asked about getting my own bags in another thread. I was told that I would have to get my bags, go back up to the 3rd floor, and from there go down to the first for DME. We are coming in on the other terminal (B). Is this true?

I'm not sure if it is true or not, however I know SW is in the A terminal, same as ME. So it was a non-issue for us. I would call DME and ask! :flower:

Yes it is true. A side and B side only connect on the third level. Baggage Claim is downstairs

We are definately getting our own bags (also flying SW). We enjoy going to get them. I know it sounds crazy, but its all part of our vacation experience. Also hubby just cant stand the thought of someone else being in charge of our things and I really want to unpack right away SO we were told just to not put the me luggage tags on. We'll get our own luggage and just head to the bus. We feal really good about our decision.

We are arriving on Continental and also wanted to collect our our baggage. What side of MCO is Continental? Will it be a hassle? We are arriving around 11:00 a.m.

we are arriving at 9:30 pm. i called dme directly and they said just don't put the yellow stickers on, get them and then do to the desk no problem. :cool1:

I too, was told this my DME. The nice woman also told me that if I did it this way, our bags would go on the same shuttle as us. However I have heard conflicting things about this on here. :confused3

I agree with you!

Continental is on A side as well but at the opposite end of the terminal. Not a real hassle at all. If you don't see Disney staff ask any airport staff to direct you to "Level 1, A-high numbers".
