DME or Towncar?

Okay, I'm getting down to crunch time here, but not sure what to do. Need help.

So we were planning on taking a towncar both ways and skipping the free DME. We plan on doing to grocery stop to buy diapers, wipes, 24 jars of baby food, 8 baby bottles of juice (or one big one), and bottled water.

I was just thinking itd be fine to pack the diapers, wipes and food because that way there'd be room for souveniers on the way back. I'm also thinking how we will be able to handle carseat, stroller (with baby), and luggage. I had thought DME could transport luggage minus us, and that would take the load off, but I've been told otherwise on the transportation board.

So what do you think we should do? Towncar or DME?

Aboslutely take the town car. I have strong feelings about this and have no problem paying a little for convienence. I do not like waiting for thebus to fill and stop a other resorts prior to mine. We have been with crying kids before and waiting is no fun.

We use Happy Limo and have never had a problem. They are always on time and I have found discounts through mousesavers.com. The grocery stop is very helpful and they will take you directly to the resort.

It's really up to you. We have avoided DME in the past because I was told there were no seatbelts (i.e. a way to strap in a car seat) on the bus. I know bus seats are designed to be their own safety defense system, but I have not been comfortable with the thought of dd not in a car seat on the freeway. Our dd turns 4 in December, and we are going to give DME a try in March (mainly because it is just a mom/daughter trip, and I don't think I can transport her stroller, carseat, and suitcase by myself...I'll actually be leaving her carseat at home...yikes!!!). I'm really nervous about this....but, don't see another options (besides not going at all).

I would say, do what you are most comfortable with.

We used a towncar in Oct instead of DME. I wanted a grocery stop and just wanted to go to straight to our resort and not stop at others. Also for DME when I first considered using it they wanted us to catch bus to airport 3 hours before our flight was to leave. Thats just way to early and they dont want to give you any other times. They say the comp automatically assigns the time and they cant give you a different one.

We used DME and had a great experience. I was a little weirded out by the no car seats thing, but I would use this service again, even for a small fee. It took us 55 minutes from landing until checkin at POP. The return trip went very smoothly, you leave your resort 3 hours prior to departure.

The only reason I would not use DME would be if I were renting a car. We had some pretty bad waits for the buses to the parks at POP (50 minutes was the worst) and if we were to stay there again I would want to have a car for backup.

Hope this helps you! :flower:

If you're nervous about no seatbelts on DME buses, then why do you use the Disney Transport buses? DT doesn't have seatbelts, either! If you sat DT doesn't use freeways, I believe I recall they do. And even if they didn't -- statistically speaking, there are more accidents, and more deadly accidents, on regular roads than there are on freeways (because intersections are more dangerous by their very nature).

For those hwo are too nervous about kids on buses without safety seats, the only viable alternative is a rental car, so you can get to all the parks in safety and good conscience. I guess an exception would be taking a towncar but then not going to any parks or attractions that you can't get to by monorail, boat, etc.

I went to WDW May 8 - 14 of this year. DME started on May 5, and was first announced around January or so. We made our reservations in October, and at that time I'd already decided I was going to use Murray Hill for private transportation to and from WDW rather than pay for Mears. For the 6 of us (including my 5 year old son and 2.5 year old daughter), it was almost the same price, so I figured why not have a direct and private ride?

Then DME was announced, and for me, everything changed. We were on a somewhat tight budget, so the prospect of paying $120 plus tip for something we could essentially get for free seemed wasteful to me.

I loved DME and had great experiences. And remember, I used it when it was only 4 days old, when they were, as I've seen people erroneously write, "working out the kinks." It's also important for me to note that my wife is a pediatrician, and I am a therapist who works mostly with motor vehicle accident victims -- this means that we're both VERY conscious (and very knowledgable) of safety matters, and we were both fine with taking our 2 precious children on the DME buses as well as on the Disney Transport buses.

And yes, luggage takes a few hours to arrive. No big deal to me. I planned for that, and we had 24 hours worth of supplies in our carry-ons. Complete change of clothes, PJs, bathing suits, toiletries, medications, etc. You'd be surprised how little room that takes up. I ALWAYS travel that way no matter where I fly, in case the airline delays my luggage. So I didn't care that my luggage arrived at CBR 3.5 hours after we did -- when it "magically appeared" in our room, we were at the pool enjoying the beginning of our vacation. Our flight landed at 9:10 a.m., and as far as I was concerned as long as the luggage arrived by the next morning we were unaffected by how long it took for the luggage to arrive.

Another little-known perk of DME is that as soon as you check-in at the DME Welcome Center at MCO, a room is held for you at your resort if one is available. The computer sends a message to your resort's computer, and even if there is only one room left (in your category), it will be held for you. Let's say there's only one room available right now at your resort. If someone arrives at the resort in a towncar or rental car one minute after you check-in at the DME desk at the airport, that other party will be told their room is not available yet, and theoretically, when you chug in on DME 45 minutes later you will be given your room and that other party may still be waiting for the next room to become available. Nice little perk if you fly in before check-in time.

If money was no object for me, and I mean ABSOLUTELY no object, then for me it would be a no-brainer -- I'd hire a private transportation company without even giving ANY thought to DME. A private, direct ride just makes more sense. I don't think that for most people taking a towncar will save time, however. With a towncar, you have to wait for your luggage, wait for the driver to actually get the car, and then (for many people) make a grocery stop. With DME, I was at CBR 53 minutes after I fiorst got in line at the DME Welocme Center. I got a grocery delivery from Gooding's that was perfect because Gooding's delivers to Bell Services rather than to your room, so we didn't have to waste time waiting in our room for the groceries to arrive.

I hope everyone enjoys their wonderful trips to WDW, and is completely satisfied with whatever choices they make!

Actually....since my dd has been born, we have not taken a Disney transportation bus, either. We have always had a rental car. We do use monorail and boat transportation when appropriate, but I am not a big fan of the Disney bus system, and generally avoid it. The only time my dd has been on a bus is from the parking lot at the airport in Phx, to the airport itself. She thinks they are really cool!! I...well, they make me a little (okay a lot) nervous. However, we are planning to give this a shot in March...I'll probably start stressing out about this in Feb!!!

Eric, I know this is OT, but can you tell me more about getting a delivery from Gooding's? Did you use wegoshop.com, or does Gooding's deliver directly? I didn't know this was available and I might prefer it over wegoshop or Netgrocer.

Thanks!

Nicolem---I looked up Goodling's myself after his suggestion. Just go to their website--just google "goodlings", and you can order a delivery. Minimum order $50, plus a $10 delivery charge. The problem is, they don't have our diaper brand "pampers cruisers" and their baby food is just "assorted gerber babyfood." Well, DD can't have carrots or pears, so there'd be a good chance the assortment would have those in it.

But, when DD is older, that'd be perfect. Of course DME won't be free then.

WAIT!!! WAIT!!!

Gooding's delivers any item they stock on their shelves. The website has a limited list of items, but the store itself has many, many items. Roughly half of my order was made up of items not on their list. E-mail them and ask. That's what I did back in May, and we were completely satisfied. In other words, if you ask if they have your baby's 8 favorite flavors of Gerber, they will get back to you and tell you which ones they have, and you'll be able to order such. Being the Dad of a 5 year old and a 2.5 year old, I'm sure you can imagine they are VERY particular about some specific brans and flavors, and we had no problems there. I can't speak to how well the other grocery delivery services work, but I know that Gooding's worked for me.

Another vote for a town car! I am pretty adament about car seats and seat belts. DME has neither...I would be very uncomfortable with a small child on the bus on an interstate or busy road without a carseat, etc.

Just my two cents worth!
