DME ?-Grandma travelling with DS

Dh and I will be getting a rental car and we would like my mother to take DS on DME so they can transport most of the luggage and we won't have to worry about fitting it all in the car.

My question is: Is there anything my mom (grandma) will have to show to DME to be able to travel with DS? I'm sure grandmas take grandkids on trips all the time-I just don't know if they will question why she is with him alone?

as long as they both have DME vouchers in their names . If she were traveling on the plane alone with him, I could see you having to provide some sort of "yes, its ok for my mother, Jane Doe, to take my son, Jr Smith, etc, etc) but I don't think it would be necessary on DME.

but any time someone other than the minor's legal guardian takes a child out of state I think it's a good idea to have something in writing AND a document giving you permission to authorize any treaments deemed medically necessary in case of an accident, illness, etc.

When my, then minor, son would visit my brother out of state I had a document in my computer with all relevant medical information, a copy his ins card and a permission statement. Sure enough, one year he developed mono and his throat closed up. Tom had everything he needed to get my son appropriate treatment until I could get there.

not NECESSARY but a good thing to have JUST IN CASE. It's a very small piece of paper, doesn't take up much room but provides CLEAR permission to have that child away from his/her parents/guardians.

The point others are trying to make is there is no "just in case." No documentation is needed to travel within the US with a minor who is not your child. None.

Completely OT to the original post but since you quoted me -

It is just not necessary or required to have permission to travel with a child in order to fly. The TSA and airlines are concerned that the traveler is who they say they are period. Passengers under 18 don't need id and adults don't need permission to take any child with them on an airplane.

Is it a good idea, maybe on the off chance that there is some sort of amber alert etc - but that would apply anytime you are going anywhere with children that arn't yours.

Medical permission is a totally different topic and anytime I travel or spend any length of time with a child who isn't mine I do get a medical release authorization. Since the OP is in a rental car going the same place as the grandma and son I probably wouldn't even bother with that in the OP's case.

Bottom line - the OP doesn't need any kind of permission for Grandma to take her son on DME, just the vouchers!

OMG, the Grandma is just riding the DME with her grandkid, she isn't taking him into Botswana! Do all you worry wart DIS members get an authorized note everytime Granny takes the kids to the movies? The 4 of them are all arriving together on the same flight, then Granny and grandson will ride the DME and Mom and Dad will fetch the rental car. You people really need to get a life!

The OP wasn't sure so she asked. It was a perfectly reasonable question. There was a bit of confusion over one of the responses and it was clarified. I really don't see the big deal.

My point is, would all you freak out DIS members also require Granny to tote along a notarized medical POA for everytime Granny took little grandson to the movies, zoo, etc.

issue. If you read my original post, I did tell the OP she didn't need to do anything to have Granny ride DME with Grandson w/out his parents.

Am I overreacting with my subsequent posts? Perhaps but as a grandmother, it's my JOB to overreact where my grandchildren are concerned!!!!!! I would go to Hell and back to keep them save as, I'm sure, everyone here would. This is a really scary world and anything I can do, I will. As long as you have bus vouchers it will not be a problem and nobody will be asked for any ID.

Even if you have to check in at the desk, as long as both parties are on the reservation it will be fine. If they ask about the two missing persons say they are driving and you are going to meet them there. I don't recall ever being asked for any ID but I don't go with children. I've never seen any adult have to prove they were the legal guardian in order to board a DME bus with a child.

Here's the thing...pooch merely mentioned that it is a good idea, when traveling with someone else's child, to have some for of authorization to provide medical care to that child. She did say that nothing was needed to fly...the airlines don't require anything. She DID say that is a good idea to have that medical authorization in other situations.

I don't think that's being a worry-wart. Did it have any particular bearing on the 'grandma is traveling on the DME bus with her grandchild' issue? No, not at all. She just went a bit further and gave some addtl advice...good advice actually.
We always left a note authorizing my mother to consent to medical care for our dd if we were gone more than the night....if my dd had had a medical issue and my mother was caring for her for the weekend and we were more than an hour away, she would need to be able to authorize medical care, in our absence.
Has no bearing on riding the DME bus..but still good to keep in mind. No need to tar and feather the poor woman for having an opinion.
