I know Disney says 10pm is the cut off for them to get your luggage but how would I know if I should go to get my luggage or if they are getting it?

"If you arrive at Orlando International Airport after 10:00 PM, you must collect your luggage at Baggage Claim and bring it with you on the Disney’s Magical Express motorcoach. "

Thanks

Truthfully? I would plan on getting the bags. I wouldn't tag them. If your flight arrives, on-time, at 9:50, it won't be at the gate until 10ish. By that time, the baggage handlers for dme will have stopped for the night.

Thanks never landed that close to the 10pm cutoff time. Wasn't sure if it was a hard 10pm cutoff. I guess I won't take the chance and just grab them first.

Plus remember your flight arrival time is 9:50 p.m but your luggage won't be off the plane at 9:50.

Most flight schedules are padded. I'd say you should be on the ground by 9:25 assuming no delays on departure. With that said, I'd still just pick up the luggage myself in the same situation.

And if they were delivered; it might take up to 3 to 4 hours for the bags to be delivered to your room

While they are padded, I've arrived late more than early.

3 hours from when you check into your resort. You're supposed to be at your resort 90 minutes after landing. So you could be looking at 4 1/2 hours.

The only rule you have to go by is the 10:00 PM cutoff.

So, if your plane gets to the gate by 10 PM you may assume that Magical Express will deliver your bags and assume responsibility for doing so. If your plane gets to the gate after 10 PM (or if you did not use the yellow tags) and you go to the carousels and your bags do not show up there, then you should file a baggage claim there before leaving.

According to who's time though? What if your phone says your plane got to the gate at 9:59PM, but whatever clock the baggage folks are using says 10:00PM?

It's simpler to just take your bags with you, or at least a bag with everything you'll need the first night. Then you can have the rest delivered to your room the next morning, instead of waiting up half the night for your luggage to be delivered.

That may be so, but I seldom have a flight that arrives 30 mins early...usually between 5 mins early and 10 mins late.
I stand by my original answer....don't tag the bags and get them at baggage claim.

I did agree with your original assessment, but it is airline and airport dependent. Both departure and arrival airports. If you fly a route frequently enough you can actually calculate how much time they are padding the schedule for and deduce if you have enough safety room to make it.

For example, lets say I'm flying NYC-MCO in winter and I get up in the morning and the weather is terrible..I already know delays will be cascading throughout the day due to the congestion of the New York airspace and more than likely I will depart late. No doubt you won't be make DME on a flight that is suppose to arrive that close to cutting off time.

With that said my airline of choice is Delta, which has the second best on time record among the airlines, second only to Hawaiian I believe. My flight into MCO is due to arrive at 9:46pm next month. No doubt we will be on the ground much sooner due to padding and due to tailwinds. If your flying from west heading east to MCO the winter trade-winds usually give you a nice boost in speed.

Hmmm, I was concerned about my 8:35 arrival and not getting my luggage. Guess by the responses on this thread, I should be more than safe to allow them to get it?

My flight in December lands at 1:30pm and I plan to get it myself. Last year I landed at 11:30am, arrived at BWV at 12:45pm, was still not delivered when I had to leave for dinner at 5:00pm. A friend of mine had hers lost for 2 days last February. She had a split stay and despite her asking several times if it was at the second hotel, they blamed Southwest. It was at the second hotel the whole time.

It is safe but, as stated above: It takes an average of about 90 minutes after landing to reach your hotel. Disney says bags will be delivered about 3 hours after checkin. Your bags could be delivered to your room around 1 AM in this average scenario.

Well, according to whatever the official airport time is.

Ah, but as the experienced traveler you are, you would have been watching both the forecast and your airline's website. You'd have jumped on the opportunity to depart earlier as soon as the airline posted their weather alert and corresponding free reschedule :).

This happens too often. I realize that an airline can misdirect a piece of luggage. Happens all the time. But, WDW resort CMs are putting the blame on the airlines all the time lately! I know that when we flew last May, and dd's best friend had a piece of luggage go 'missing', it wasn't the airlines fault, it was Disney's!! The bag was sitting at Pop..probably from about 7pm until we finally got it at POR at 1:15 am!!! The DME CMs at MCO put all the appropriate notes in the reservation.....the bar code 'should' have been fine. But no, they merely looked at the resort and automatically sent it there....didn't scan it at all!!! Even though the resort change had happened at least a month and a half prior to travel!!! They still messed it up.
I'm getting to the point where I am going to take full responsibility for my bags...go to baggage claim and get them, then if I do a split stay, I'll take them with me in a cab! Way too much chance for error lately.

Naturally, assuming your schedule is flexible to depart earlier of course.
