DLH - upgrade or stick with standard view?

Hi all-

I booked a standard view room for our August trip because it was a really good deal. Now I'm wondering if I should try and upgrade to a view room. We're honestly not in the room that much but I've wanted to stay at the DLH since I was little so I kinda feel like I should get the most of the experience.

Thoughts?

Shamelessly bumping my own post as it dropped to page 2!

I'm just curious if a view room makes a stay in the DLH that much more magical!

It kinda depends on what standard room they stick you in. When we stayed, we had a view of the parking lot. Not magical. Because we had other issues with the room, they moved us and we had a view of the koi pond. The new room was leaps and bounds better than the first and the view definitely helped. But you might luck out and get a better view than we had in which case I would say, no...it's probably not really worth it.

Here is something I tried that worked last time...when we checked in, I smiled sweetly (and had my adorable daughter looking adorable by my side) and asked if they had any upgrades available. He checked and sure enough...they put us in a park view room at no extra cost. It NEVER hurts to ask.

Thanks, FlameGirl! I think I'll call today just to see what the difference in price is between standard/view. If all else fails, I'll try the "smiling upgrade" approach! :)

We've gotten the "polite and smiling" upgrade at DLH most times we've stayed there. Maybe we're just lucky or unusually polite (we try to check in around noon). One time was an AWESOME upgrade to a high floor DTD view in the Magic tower (or whatever the name is that faces DTD).

I've stayed at the DLH many times, but not since the remodel. I really don't think that Park view is really worth it. However, standard view can mean several things. If I were you, I would call and just let them know that you don't want a parking lot view. That way, you might be looking at the pools or gardens which is fine. BTW, I'm just now getting around to booking a trip for August - we're staying one night (still unbooked) at DL, 7 nights in San Diego, and ending up for 2 nights (already booked) at the Grand Californian Villas. I was surprised to get a $360 rate at the DLH for a standard room! That seems pretty steep.....may I ask (if you care to share) how/what you got your great rate there? Since, it's peak time, they won't take my usual AAA. Frustrating because I promised the kids DLH for the first night. Thanks!

A lot of people have gotten pretty decent summer rates because of the special summer promotion Disney is running right now, up to 30% off at PPH, 35% off at DLH, and 40% off at GCH, but the catch is you must book for a 2-night minimum. I still got a better rate for what I wanted when I want to go using my Disney AP than the summer promotion though.

I don't think 'standard' includes views of the pool or gardens- I believe that's an upgrade from standard. Maybe someone else knows for sure...

A couple of years ago I was just like you staying at DLH which had been a dream of mine since childhood (I was born in 1953) the funny thing is I never thought about the view, once in the room My son who remarked about how small the balcony was that there was hardly room to step out onto it, I do not recall what the view was so I am guessing it was nothing specktacular and yet I can recall the Lobby , the beautiful woodwork, the elevators etc etc, I loved the Hotel and final staying there and going to DL for the first time in my life.
I have wondered since about the views from DL Hotel and hopefully will go back someday.
If this is a once in a lifetime trip go for the view you want to make yourself happy.
