We are taking our girls - ages 2,4,&5 to DL in September when crowds are low(hopefully). Anyway, we are trying to deiced between DLH or Paradise Pier esp. since the refurb of PP. Any advice or suggestions?

I would call and talk directly to a front desk CM at PP and find out how far they are on refurb, especially the pool.

In general the rooms at the Disneyland Hotel are larger. If you book a theme park or pool view room and request the Sierra Tower and ask for a room with 2 queens and a day bed you get a nice large room that is decorated very nicely with loads of Disneyland touches from Mickey Glove sconces in the bathroom to pixie dust border paper with Tinkerbell where some of the pixie dust glows in the dark. The rooms also have a sliding glass door that opens up agains a railing where it is nice to pull up a chair and look out. The grounds are extensive and pretty. The pool is the Neverland themed pool and is quite fun looking.
At the Paradise Pier hotel you will get a smaller room, though it is a fine size, the new beach theme decore and , if you book a theme park view, and awesome view of DCA. There are essentially no grounds to this hotel. The pool is on the fourth floor roof and is being remodeld. It used to be just a rectangle in the middle of some cement. Now it will have a beach theme but I don't know what the extensiveness of the remodel is.
I personally think the Disneyland Hotel is MUCH better than the Paradise Pier but the PP has loads of fans and it is usually cheaper and sometimes much cheaper.

daannzzz pretty much said it all! I just wanted to add that PPH is supposed to be finished with the refurb in May.

I just got back from the Paradise Pier last week, and walked around the grounds of the DL hotel. I wish I had stayed with DLH. I was not happy with the service at PP. Of course, having a non-refurbished room didn't help. If you had a park view, PP might be fun.

We stayed at PPH last week and loved it, especially for the AP price of $79/night! We had a refurbished room on the fifth floor with a view of DCA. We were almost right across from the Orange Stinger ride and could see the higher rides (Mulholland Madness, Maliboomer, etc.) and the grizzly peak, but if you want to look down into the parks you'd have to be on the seventh floor or higher. I'm not sure what floor they're working on now; I did try to get up to floors 13, 14 and 15 but the elevator buttons wouldn't work for those floors. I went up to the 11th floor to check out the view from higher up and noticed that that floor wasn't refurbished yet, so maybe they're working on the higher floors now. They were tearing something apart next to the pool, but it wasn't affecting the use of the pool or the jacuzzi. Everyone we encountered in the hotel was very nice and always said hello to us.

Stayed at DLH two summers ago and loved it!!. The Neverland theme pool is ssooooo cute and as a previous poster said, the grounds are beautiful especially at night! Low level lights with bridges going over coy ponds----beautiful! We really enjoyed our stay and the Tinkerbell and pixie dust borders in the rooms were a very nice touch.
