DL/DCA DAS Questions

I've been to DL a zillion times, but in April am going with my sister-in-law and my 8 year old nephew who is autistic and non-verbal. It's our first trip where accommodations would be needed.

Is the super thread about the DAS program at DL still basically current? I noticed it was closed and there was a note about needing updates. We would go to GR when we arrive and apply for a DAS at that point? Same for the stroller as a wheelchair approval?

Any recommendations for a place that rents strollers and delivers to the hotel?

My nephew is not potty trained. Are there restrooms that have places for diaper changes (not the flip down folding ones...he's too large for those) that can accommodate a larger boy?

Any other tips or advice? For navigating the CA parks with an autistic child? Favorite quieter places to take a break? We are staying at BWPPI and plan on arriving at the parks early and leaving after it gets too crowded.

Yes, you request the DAS and/or a stroller-as-wheelchair tag at Guest Relations. You may do so first thing when arriving, or at any other point during your visit.

Sorry, I don't have a recommendation for stroller rentals in California -- the DL forum might.

If the child is not able to be changed standing up, your best option will be the First Aid location in each park. I don't believe there are any other places for a taller/older child to lay down for changing.

The Resource for Guest with Cognitive Disabilities should have some suggested rest spots and other tips.

Just as a heads up most of the restroom changing facilities are not the pull down type. They are usually a slab that is put into the wall near the hand washing area. Depending on how big the 8 year old it may or may not be long enough for him. It'll definitly hold his weight though as I have seen teenagers and grown adults sitting on them. There is also the floor of the companion bathrooms but that may not be super comfortable for the person doing the changing and would require carrying around a pad to put on the floor.

if the bathroom dose not work then you can always go to first aid to change him.

as to other things

if he has difficulty with sound over the ear protectors or the ones.

light sensitivity sunglasses light weigh hoody or a hat.

and Ipad/ I phone/ held head device. exc. type device for destraction

any type of comfort items he likes ( I would not bring his only XYZ)but if he likes soft things a light weight soft blanket, if he has fidget toys, if you puts things in his mouth things like that, but make sure he is ok if you lose something.

you can ask the CM at GR for some ideas of quiet places

Break Areas
Should a Guest with a cognitive disability become over-stimulated or need some down time, several quieter locations are available throughout the Resort where he or she can “take a break.” To find the break area nearest you, ask a Cast Member for assistance.

DS (11) has always loved going to the Main Street Cinema for some down time. It's air conditioned, has low lighting and 6 different cartoons playing on a loop. We also allow him to bring his Nintendo DS and headphones for use when we are in a line, waiting for food or when he just needs a bit of a break. As well, we never spend the whole day in the park, we always take a break after lunch and go back to the hotel. We typically leave the park around 1:30 or 2:00 and head back in around 4:00ish.

here is a list that is found in the link on place to go that are more quiet ( incase the link dose not work for you) I find at Disney world the CM are good at finding/ letting you know where there is a quiet place in case you need something right a way, I would think this would be the same for Disneyland CM after all they do spend a lot of time there

( just a side note I have never tried to sit at a table serves restaurant I have sat in a QS off peak times with no problem, at Disney world so do not know who this world would, sitting at a table serve )
