Looks like I am going to Southern California for work and am going to spend a weekend at Disneyland on my own time and am looking for some advice

Are the weekends quite busy? I am going in late January.

Any must see attractions at Disneyland or California Adventure?

I have been to WDW many times but this will be my first time to Disneyland.

Weekends are very busy! Get there before park opening and head right to a major attraction. For your first time at DLR definitely don't miss:

DL:
Indiana Jones- Ride several times because it is the best ride at the resort
Matterhorn- 1st steel roller coaster in the world! A classic and recently refurbished
Mr. Toad-Used to be at MK but was removed
Pinocchio/Alice/Roger Rabbit- More dark rides here not at WDW
Space-Supposed to be much better than MK's (I will find out next summer)
Enchanted Tiki Room-Not the dumb "New Management" version

Unfortuneatley January is the "off season" and Splash, IASW, and Gadget's Go Coaster will be down.

DCA:
ToT- Best ride in the park
Grizzly River Run- Fun ride if you don't mind getting wet in Jan
Monster's Inc.- Only dark ride in the park, but well done
California Screamin- Extremely fun and intense roller coaster. Don't miss.

Orange Stinger will be downfor refurbs

Use FP for (in this particular order)

DL:
Space
Indy
Buzz Lightyear
BTMRR
Autopia
Roger Rabbit(unnetworked)

DCA:
Soarin
California Screamin
Grizzly River Run(unnetworked)
ToT
Mulholland Madness

After 3 days, both DH's and my favorite attractions weren't even rides at all. lol

In DL, we absolute LOVED the Jedi Training Academy. The adults around us joked with us that they wished DL did one of the shows with adults. lol

IN DCA, was our favorite - the Aladdin show. DEFINITELY see this in my opinion. We all loved it (me, DH, 7yo DD, and even 2yo DD). The genie is HILARIOUS!! Very up to date, too. The genie kept cracking jokes that reflected current headlines (like Britney & K-Fed etc) Too, too funny. We sat on the first balcony, last row. I'd like to have sat a few rows up, but I would pick the balcony over the floor, personally.
