DH and I are booking a trip for Disneyland for the first week in June. Everywhere I have looked has said avoid DL in the summer - June - August. Is the first week really that busy? We were thinking that kids would still be in school so it wouldn't be that bad.

Thoughts, please?

Thanks in advance!

I haven't been there in about 10 years during that week. I am just subscribing to the thread. That is the week we are going this summer.

First week of June will be busy but not crazy summer busy like later June and all of July. Most, but not all So Cal schools get out around the second week of June and that is even changing with schools going year round and some districts starting school in early August and getting out end of May. Our kids district will start that in 2009. Anyway, if I had to pick a week in June I would pick the first week.

Thank you for your response - I appreciate it!

Normally we go to Disneyland in April or May - so this is a first for us. However, this is the first time that we are coming for a week vs a long weekend - so we will have some leeway with what we do.

Hey Keggy, if you had talked to me about summer ;) then you would not be able to say "Everywhere I have looked has said avoid DL in the summer". Summer is my favorite time of year to go to DLR. I am in the minority to be sure, but I think the advantages of summer visits significantly outweigh the disadvantages.

Hope you have a good trip in early June. :)

Ive been the first week of June, and thought the crowds were very manageable, and the weather was awesome. A little gloomy in the mornings, burned off by noon, and sweatshirt weather at night. Full entertainment without the enormous crowds that show up later in the summer.

Have fun!

I am in that minority with you. I love Disneyland in the summer. I have learned to work the crowds.

We also love the summer(August), tried June, just not hot enough. We love the GRR ride, does not take long to dry out.

I think it'll surprise you. Much as I was surprised first time I went to FL in Nov. 83 and when we exited the airport we could not believe how hot, and humid, it was! Like PP said, sweatshirts are a must in June. It can get pretty cold, and damp, after the sun sets. Plus we aren't into our full summer heat yet. Also as mentioned, "June Gloom" happens most mornings. Sometimes it can last all day. First week of June you will miss the locals (with kids) but you may also have less opportunities for the regular summer entertainment. DLR hasn't released their June calendar yet, so I'm not sure when the late hours, as well as fireworks, etc. start.

I actually spent several summers in California - I have family in West Hills - but, that was close to 15 years ago! My DH and I try to go to DL once a year, however we have never been in June. We actually enjoy many of the attractions at Disneyland better than WDW, so we make it a priority.

Thank you for the advice!

Usually it is the second week of June and sometime the third. The OP will probably have max entertainment on the weekends for the first week of June.

This was absolutely the case 7 months ago. We were there on a Sunday - Tuesday (approx. June 3-June 5th). We included Sunday in our plans so we could enjoy the Fireworks & Aladdin Show.

The parks were moderately busy but by employing early am touring & FP collecting it was very manageable. Fireworks only Fri-Sun though that week. I would suspect it will be similar this year.

& as far as the weather....it was heavenly. Early morning & after sundown, it was in the 60s....during the day in the 80s with no humidity. Heaven. :thumbsup2

This will be our 1st time going to DL and we are thinking about going 6/6-14 week. i am a master at planning our WDW vacations but the last time i went to DL was when i was 5. it will be just me, dh, and our 7yr dd so i have been surfing the websites looking for the best deals and hotels. i'm so used to staying at pop and all of these hotels are freaking me out. since we are staying 8 nights we are getting one of the cali. city passes cause we would like to go to all of those other places and that is a really good deal. i'm not used to seeing such cheaper ticket prices for disney. we are thinking about staying at the hotel menage hotel cause that one had a really good package deal. i'm learning a lot from the disboard though.
have fun!

Re-think the Menage, mousie mom. You are forced to use ART because it's across the freeway.

First off read ALL of HydroGuy's tip threads (especially his DLR for WDW veterans thread.)

Next i STRONGLY recommend that you consider a motel/hotel on Harbor easy to walk to (or one of the DLR properties). But if you're used to Pop, then there are 5-7 properties that would be comparable THAT YOU CAN WALK TO DLR.

After reading HydroGuy's threads, post again (& I assume you are wanting to include San Diego in your visit with the SoCal pass.....what else??)

Have fun planning a visit to Walt's Park. :thumbsup2

Hound, you just gave a nice summary of "HydroGuy's Hotel Rule" www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1199862.

To the OP, IMO one of the biggest mistakes a WDW vet can make at DLR is to think hotels & transportation work somewhat analogously at DLR and to accept bus transportation and/or perosnal auto transportation as being sufficient. Yes, you can use buses and personal autos at DLR but you give up one of DLR's hugest advantages. A walking distance hotel changes everything about your trip - and is a stress reducer - especially in the summer when you should take hotel breaks every day.

We went last year that week and it was fine. There were alot a people there, but nothing like when we went during spring break '06. Wait times were like 15min.

Its my absoloute favorite time of the year to go. First week for sure!!! Actually I love it so much my yearly visits will always be then. Its not as bad as you would think, its a bit busy with a few church groups and a few class visits but not like SUPER SUPER SUPER BUSY to the point your pushing and shoving. The wait time for the rides are about 10 -15 minutes and the weather is gorgeous, not peak summer heat but enough to go on water rides and dry out in 15 minutes and wear shorts during the day and light jackets at night. Not to mention that local schools are still in around that time and most people havent started taking their vacations yet. :thumbsup2

Another bonus I must add is that the park is usually open until 11:00 instead of 8pm and midnight on weekends, and I found this past June that the Electrical parade was playing which was fantastic because its only a seasonal parade.

We're going the second week of June and the last time we went during this time, Disneyland closed early one night for a Grad Nite. It was wierd hearing fireworks going off in the middle of the night!

Since I work at a school, we go as soon as I'm done working, so mid-June is better than mid-August!

We love the first week of June. We've had great luck with the crowds during that week since the kids aren't quite out of school yet. The weather is nice but not too hot, which is also something I like. :)
