DIY painting

Not sure of your time frame but both Lowes and Home Depot tend to have some kind of sale around holiday weekends. It's usually a rebate but if you are already planning a project might as well get a few bucks back.

Good luck

We painted our nursery last month.

Two time savers:

Spray primer just over the black scuffs on the walls. Did 2 coats of Sherwin Williams paint (Sea Salt over builder tan) and this was recommended by SW rep instead of full-on primer. Took 2 minutes and worked great.

Frog Tape instead of the blue painters tape. Worked great for us on the trim.

I also want to paint some rooms in my house, but I can really only tackle a square room with low ceilings on my own...and even then its a challenge! I was looking on craigslist and saw a painter who offered to just do the cutting in around the edges and then I would roll the rest. Sounded like a great, economical option - I can roll til the cows come home, but when it comes to straight lines, I just can't seem to get it right.

Just a thought, if you can find someone willing to do that...

Wow I LOVE that idea. I'm a rolling queen too but we all hate the cutting in stuff here

I paint the ceiling first and come down the wall about a half inch. To cut in at the ceiling, I use one of those roller pads with the wheels on one side. The wheels roll along the ceiling and it's the quickest cut-in ever and gives a really straight line. The key is to apply the paint to the pad with a brush so the wheels stay clean.

I like Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore paints, frog tape and Purdy paint brushes and rollers. If you are painting bare walls I like Zinsser 123 primer.

I have never had good luck with painter's tape. I've had better luck with a quality angled brush and just take the time to paint carefully. Lowe's paint is my fav, Behr is way too runny imo.

I agree about the painters tape! I never use it, it takes to much time and doesn't give a nice edge. Take your time on the edges, check the you tube for tips on painting edges there are good videos and tips that can help a lot.

I agree -- I like these two paints the best also. Really dislike Behr paints - runny and they take way too many coats of paint. I thought I just got a bad batch the first time and tried it again (late on a weekend and the paint stores closed). Big mistake! I will wait for Sherwin williams or BM to open!

which brands do you consider to be quality. When we had our previous home painted the painter wanted to use Sherwinn Williams.

I almost 55 years old (yikes) and I have been painting away lately. I use Sherwin Williams paint, they have sales all the time, 30% off, etc. I am boring, and use white paint on ceilings and trim in the entire house. I use SW Dover White for both. (Flat for ceiling, semi gloss for trim). Lately I have been using their H&G line, it's a little cheaper.

I have 2 roller sticks, that extend their lengths, a short and a long one. 1 1/2" angled brush for cutting in. Roller tray, disposable liners, hand hed cup thing, also with liners. Do not buy cheap rollers! We prime the walls if the color was dark, or if DH spackled alot. I do the walls first! I cut in along the ceiling, trim, in the corners, around the windows. 1-2 coats, sometimes just one. Then I roll the walls, 2 coats, usually one in the morning, the 2nd after lunch. Then I use tape (FROG TAPE is the best!!) cut in along the upper walls first, and then paint the ceiling, 2 coats, with the roller. Remove tape shortly after painting, pull it at an angle for best results. Then I tape along trim, and paint trim around the room with the semi-gloss. Lately I have been painting inside the closets when I do a room, I just use the primer. If I HAVE to, I paint the closet doors, room door. Paint inside any inlaid area first, then the flat areas. (brush of course).

I get great results! Want to sell this house next year, so I am using lots of neutrals. :crazy2:

So funny, people do ceiling first, trim first, and I do the walls first! It works any old way, I guess. Just don't try and use tape along the ceiling, and cut in the walls that way, it is a disaster, much easier to tape the upper wall, then along the ceiling edge!

FROG brand tape works well, I place it carefully, and press hard on it along the edge that will get the paint. But, if you can get buy without it, great!
