Dixie Landings

We used to go to Dixie Landings, and then one year, it's no longer Dixie Landings but Port Orleans Riverside. Does anyone know why they made the name change? I'm assuming there was a financial advantage, but beyond that, it just seemed 'out of the blue.'

I imagine the Dixie part was seen as potentially offensive to some?

Port Orleans gives a more specific theming that comes to mind

Thanks. That was fascinating. I had no idea that they had closed so much of it after 9/11. We have some of the greatest memories with our kids from our old Dixie Landings trips.

Thanks for the info! My husband and I were just reminiscing about our Dixie Landings trip years ago with the kids and were just wondering the same thing, why they changed the name. Thank you

My first WDW stay was in '99 at DxL. Just loved it there. We returned in '01, right after 9/11. It had been changed to POR! Is there a difference? No, not really. I've stayed there several times since the change....it's still a lovely resort.

Simple. Dixie Landings is a racist name. Dixie invokes images of slavery and plantations and the Confederacy and the KKK. Enlightened people wouldn't want to stay there. Only racists would feel comfortable in that antebellum theming. Port Orleans Riverside is a better name.

Oh, I don't think it is a racist name. I was being facetious. I'm proud to be a son of Dixie. Born and reared in the great state of South Carolina. But apparently someone at Disney did! That's what the article said.

I know! In these PC times, I'm sure there are some (like at Disney) who would even want Dixie Cups to change their name out of "sensitivity".

What the hell is a dixie?! LOL. Southern thing for sure (I'm in NY). Never knew the connotation it had.
