Divas, Zebra Domes, and Pixie Dust! A Week in an African Paradise! New TR Link Pg.145

The ceramic activity sounds like fun! I know Hannah and Alison would really enjoy that. Would love to see a picture of the finished product. I read "what do you mean you aren't coming to dinner?" and said "no way!!"

I love that they actually glaze the pieces for the kids....very nice.

Oh and both your men better be coming to dinner. I'm putting my foot down on this one! LOL

When I was doing research on the Animal Kingdom Lodge, I was excited about all of the activities offered for kids. One of them was the Ceramics Activity offered on Tuesdays and Fridays from 11:00 until 1:00.

Here is the description from the activity sheet we received at check-in:

Ceramics Activity
Join us for the ceramics activity and create your own work of art! This is a paid craft and prices will vary. Pieces are picked up the following day.

I knew this was something Chelsea would really get into doing. When we got back to AKL, Connor declared, “I am not feeling very crafty. Can I just go back to the room?” ...

They had several different pieces available to choose from -- giraffes, zebras, flip flops, tiles, several different types of boxes with lids. Chelsea chose a round box with a lid to paint. It was $15.00, and the CM explained that they would glaze it and it would be available for pick-up after 10:00 the following day.

Chelsea got right to work painting her box. She chose pinks, purples, and blues and decorated the box and lid with Mickey heads. It turned out so cute! I need to take a closer picture of it.

until it was time to get ready to head back to DHS for dinner and thrill rides.

UP NEXT: What do you mean you aren’t coming to dinner???

Too funny-last week David was watching over my shoulder while I was typing and saw Connor-this week Emily is peeking over my shoulder and saw Chelsea and wanted to know who she was-she said she looked "nice" and now she is going to go back and read your trip report-I told her she's enjoy it...:goodvibes

AKL has so many great activities-that's one of the things I love :cloud9: about it (I already printed off a list of the June activities from the AKL resort board-I don't think they change that much month to month) so I have a vague idea of what's doing--What a nice souvenier to have...:goodvibes (I'd love to see a picture of how it turned out...)

I love how Connor said he wasn't "feelling very crafty"...:lmao: (David would say that...)

The end of you report sounds ominous-please tell me you all made it to Brown Derby...:confused3

I am so happy for you that you're going back to F&W-just you and Charles...:cloud9: that should be really fun (Have you told the kids???)

Wow you are starting school-we don't do that till after Labor Day but poor David doesn't get out till mid-late June-Em is always a week or so earlier-so it really evens out in the end...

Congrats again on the Fall trip....:woohoo:

Someone missed the Brown Derby dinner?!?! :scared1: :scared:

I have a feeling I know who... if true, clearly this will call for a do-over in Oct! ;)

Glad Chelsea had fun with the ceramics activity. I'd love to see a closer pic of her project. Too cute that Connor wasn't "feeling crafty."

You have me drooling over thoughts of bacon double cheeseburgers and chicken flat bread. I am starving!

Hurrah for a new ticker!! :yay:

What a sweet picture of Chelsea painting her box! Others have mentioned it and I too would love to see the finished product. I imagine you have a picture ready for the update when you all pick it up...
Connor not crafty? Well give that boy some night vision goggles and some spy tools and we'll see a very different type of craftiness!:rotfl2:
I agree with TK an afternoon or even a whole day at the resort can be just plain blissful!

Hmmmmm wonder where I was eating IF you ended up having an open seat for HBD, after all I was just a 15 minute walk away...:rotfl:

Your pictures have me sooo excited for our December trip, even though we are at Kidani, we will need to spend some time at the main lodge, there is just nothing like it! Beautiful!

So cool that Chelsea did the craft project at AKL! Can't wait to see the pics of the finished project!

Uh oh...those boys better get themselves to dinner!

What a great kids activity!!! I love that you can do very cool things like that at Disney!!! Chelsea really looking into making her craft!!!

Love the pictures of the resort!! That resort is simply gorgeous and I can't wait to visit it and see it up close!!!

:scared1:What do you mean I'm not coming to dinner :scared1: That doesn't sound very good at all!!!

Update soon Jackie!!!

The craft activity looks like something my girls would love, but my son is never "feeling crafty". He will, however, be feeling like shopping when he sees the Star Wars gift shop! He too has quite the star wars arsenal, if the imperial forces ever attack, we'll be safe! Little boys!

Great update!! What a fun project Chelsea was able to do! I bet the box is pretty when it was all finished, do you have a completed picture? Can't wait to read more.

Melissa

Were there any adults participating in the arts and crafts stuff?

There were adults doing it when we stayed at AKL (mostly adults who had children doing the activity and didn't want to sit around OR, on our last trip, a husband and wife who clearly had spent a little time at the pool bar ;) )

Chelsea is a girl after my own heart with those Zebra Domes! One of the perks of staying at AKL...you can get them all the time!!!

Someone asked what they are made off...they are tiny sponge cakes with with coffee and cream in them. Then they are dipped in white and dark chocolate. OH and they have Kahlua in them!!! (best part!)

So Connor was not feeling "very crafty". LOL. Well, I never feel "very crafty", so it seems he and I have something in common!

All I can say is that EVERYONE better be showing up for dinner! :confused3

Here's a picture of Chelsea's finished box. Apparently she has not mastered the art of dusting her room!

I was all ready to comment on your chapter with some lovely discourse, and then I read, What do you mean you aren't coming to dinner?

Oh my.

Oh my is right!

Anyway, what a lovely afternoon! I can't wait to see how Chelsea's ceramic came out. You know, I feel sometimes these relaxing afternoons at the hotel are nicer than park time. Don't flame me, people! We love our parks, but this downtime is nice, and sometimes, unexpected and wonderful.

We perfected the art of resort downtime on this trip -- I was quite proud of myself actually!

Great update Jackie! Chelsea looks so peaceful painting her box! What a cute activity and a nice way to spend some one on one time together! Don't you just love the selections at Mara! Thanks for the gorgeous pics. of the Lodge, LOVE them! Uh Oh about dinner....Charles right?

Thank you, Diane! It was a very cute activity -- I wish I had done one as well! Everything we had at the Mara was so good! Yep, Charles...

Oh.

No.

What a wonderful update until the "What do you mean you aren't coming to dinner?"

But, but...it's the Brown Derby!!

Don't leave me hanging too long!!

I won't leave you in suspense too long -- but I am sure you can guess what happens...:sad2:

Oh I can't wait to get there..glad we're doing Saratoga first and ending at AKL, love that painting activity, I hope one of the girls wants to do it so I can go too!

It was so cute! They had so many activities like that, and I wish we could have done more.

Our kiddies don't go back to school until the Wed after labor day, however, they do go until the very end of June, especially the lower grades. Jasmine was done on June 13 and the following week was exams, but she only had to write one and that was on the Monday, so she is getting an extra long break this summer.

Lucky Jasmine! I hope she is enjoying herself! :goodvibes

On the non-TR front, I can't belive you guys go back to school so early! To me it seems like up here we should go back earlier and get out earlier because it's still soooo hot down there! Waiting until the beginning of September at least would let it cool down down there a bit.

Unfortunately good sense is sadly lacking in some of the decision-making elements around here. ;)

And, you and Charles are going back in October?! I can't wait to hear about your plans!!

We (I) am super excited about the October trip!

That ceramics painting sounds like fun! So does lunch at the Mara, yummm. Chelsea's love for zebra domes is making me sooo curious (and hungry) to try some! Honestly though, I'm not totally sure what's in them!?

Zebra domes are like little cake bites -- frosting on the outside and cake and a mousse-like filling on the inside. Definitely try some while you are there in December!

The ceramic activity sounds like fun! I know Hannah and Alison would really enjoy that. Would love to see a picture of the finished product. I read "what do you mean you aren't coming to dinner?" and said "no way!!"

It was fun! I took a picture of the finished box for everyone to see. :thumbsup2

I love that they actually glaze the pieces for the kids....very nice.

Oh and both your men better be coming to dinner. I'm putting my foot down on this one! LOL

It's Disney, so it was top-notch! ;)

I think I needed you there to put your foot down.

Like David and Connor, I think Chelsea and Emily would get along really well, too! They seem to be very similar.

I don't think the activities or times really change -- I had a January list and it was almost identical to the one they handed out at check-in. I loved all the things available to do -- I wanted to do the cookie decorating at Boma but we never seemed to be around the Lodge at 1:00.

I love how Connor said he wasn't "feelling very crafty"...:lmao: (David would say that...)

Now if it had involved Legos, Connor would have been all over that! LOL!

The end of you report sounds ominous-please tell me you all made it to Brown Derby...:confused3

Well...

I am so happy for you that you're going back to F&W-just you and Charles...:cloud9: that should be really fun (Have you told the kids???)

Chelsea knows (she overheard a phone call I made to request the days off), but I haven't figured out how to tell Connor yet -- he is not going to react very well...

Wow you are starting school-we don't do that till after Labor Day but poor David doesn't get out till mid-late June-Em is always a week or so earlier-so it really evens out in the end...

Yes, it does, but it sure isn't fun to go back when everyone is still enjoying their summers. :(

Congrats again on the Fall trip....:woohoo:

Thank you! I am so looking forward to experiencing the Food and Wine Festival!

Someone missed the Brown Derby dinner?!?! :scared1: :scared:

I have a feeling I know who... if true, clearly this will call for a do-over in Oct! ;)

Mmmhmmm, that is correct! ;) Wait until I tell you what he said when I was making ADRs for October...

Glad Chelsea had fun with the ceramics activity. I'd love to see a closer pic of her project. Too cute that Connor wasn't "feeling crafty."

I took a picture of it before I remembered to dust it!

You have me drooling over thoughts of bacon double cheeseburgers and chicken flat bread. I am starving!

Oh, trust me -- my stomach was growling while I was writing that update!

Hurrah for a new ticker!! :yay:

I feel so much more complete when I have a ticker.

I took one just for the responses! You are so right -- Connor's craftiness is just slightly different from his sister's. LOL!

Hmmmmm wonder where I was eating IF you ended up having an open seat for HBD, after all I was just a 15 minute walk away...:rotfl:

Oh, I so would have called you had I known!

Your pictures have me sooo excited for our December trip, even though we are at Kidani, we will need to spend some time at the main lodge, there is just nothing like it! Beautiful!

Yes, you must go spend some time there so you can take pictures to help me through my hiatus from AKL. :goodvibes

First set of replies and a picture of Chelsea's box on the previous page (I also updated the original post to show it).

So cool that Chelsea did the craft project at AKL! Can't wait to see the pics of the finished project!

Uh oh...those boys better get themselves to dinner!

Chelsea had a lot of fun being an artist for a little while.

Well, one of the boys made it to dinner...

What a great kids activity!!! I love that you can do very cool things like that at Disney!!! Chelsea really looking into making her craft!!!

Chelsea loves anything like that! Me too, for that matter!

Love the pictures of the resort!! That resort is simply gorgeous and I can't wait to visit it and see it up close!!!

I predict you will just fall in love with AKL when you visit!

:scared1:What do you mean I'm not coming to dinner :scared1: That doesn't sound very good at all!!!

It wasn't good at all...

Update soon Jackie!!!

I will update soon -- well...as long as work doesn't overwhelm me too much this week. Connor's open house is Tuesday night and Chelsea's (and mine) is Wednesday. The first day of school is Thursday. Ugghhh -- I shouldn't have typed that all out. LOL!

Were there any adults participating in the arts and crafts stuff?

Yes, there were a couple of adults doing it -- and then they had a beaded jewelry activity on two of the other days that was an adults-only activity. I had meant to make it back there for that, but I think that was the day I got stuck at MK late into the afternoon.

The craft activity looks like something my girls would love, but my son is never "feeling crafty". He will, however, be feeling like shopping when he sees the Star Wars gift shop! He too has quite the star wars arsenal, if the imperial forces ever attack, we'll be safe! Little boys!

:lmao: I love how you put that -- yes, we are protected from any Imperial Forces ourselves.

Great update!! What a fun project Chelsea was able to do! I bet the box is pretty when it was all finished, do you have a completed picture? Can't wait to read more.

Melissa

Thank you! Yes, I went back and updated the original post to include a picture and put one at the beginning of the replies on the other page.

There were adults doing it when we stayed at AKL (mostly adults who had children doing the activity and didn't want to sit around OR, on our last trip, a husband and wife who clearly had spent a little time at the pool bar ;) )

:rotfl: I bet their ceramics turned out very interesting.

Chelsea is a girl after my own heart with those Zebra Domes! One of the perks of staying at AKL...you can get them all the time!!!

And she took full advantage of that perk!

Someone asked what they are made off...they are tiny sponge cakes with with coffee and cream in them. Then they are dipped in white and dark chocolate. OH and they have Kahlua in them!!! (best part!)

Good description!

So Connor was not feeling "very crafty". LOL. Well, I never feel "very crafty", so it seems he and I have something in common!

:rotfl2:

All I can say is that EVERYONE better be showing up for dinner! :confused3

Sadly...well, you will see, Mary Ellen.

Oh your pics of the lodge is making me really excited!!!!!

I am so excited you are getting to stay there on your trip! You are absolutely going to love it, Kat!

This is great. Can't wait to read more

:welcome: Thanks for reading along!

What a relaxing afternoon!

I love Chelsea's box. It's so cute!

Your tr is convincing me to ditch the Poly next year and try AKL.

What a relaxing afternoon!

Your tr is convincing me to ditch the Poly next year and try AKL.

And I haven't even gotten to the majority of the photos I took at AKL -- plus there are a couple of other really neat activities that we did while we were there (I took pics of those, too). :thumbsup2

Sounds like a great relaxing afternoon! I love reading about all the resort activities and look forward to the day when Henry is old enough to enjoy them. Chelsea's box turned out great. :thumbsup2

The "up next" had me :sad2: :headache:

Is the Brown Derby on your list for October again? ;)
