At what point does an annoying neighbor obnoxiously blasting their stereo in their front yard go from irritating to officially disturbing the peace?

We have a neighbor across the street from us and one house over. When we got home yesterday afternoon around 2 or so, he was standing in his driveway blasting some cd with boot camp chant stuff (like the "I don't know what I been told" "I don't know what I been told" etc...) and he was shouting along with it at the top of his lungs. When he got tired of that, he switched to loud rock stuff and raked the front yard.

There was continuous noise that was still going on at the same level when I left a little after 3:30 to run some stuff to my parents' house for our Superbowl party later that evening. He was seriously so loud that we could hear him across the street and in our concrete block home with new windows that block a vast majority of outside noise.

I'm wondering if next time, I should call our Sheriff Dept's non-emergency number to report him for disturbing the peace. (It's not the first time this has happened, and he's not the kind of neighbor that you could just go nicely ask him to turn it down).

Do you live in my neighborhood? Next time I hear our neighbors playing loud rap music filled with profanity, I'm calling the police. It will at least put it on record even if nothing gets done. Enough calls and something will be done about it.

I would call the police, but I don't think I would say anything to the guy..he sounds a little off...

Hasn't he ever heard of an IPod, then at least he could just break his own eardrums..

I feel for you, I like QUIET in my neighborhood, and we pretty much get it.

You might want to contact your town hall and see what the noise ordinance for your town says. Sometimes it is restricted between certain hours, depending upon the town.

I'm lucky, we don't have neighbors that do that.

Most local entities have noise ordinanaces (codes). Find out what yours is, and if you think he is breaking that, call the police (non-emergency number). I know some may say to go over and talk to your neighbor, but I have past experience that makes me not feel that way anymore. Easier to get a neutral third party involved.

uggg I feel your pain. We had neighbors on both sides of us that thought everyone around them loved the music. It was a nightmare. I finally got tire of both of them and confronted them both. It didn't go nicely like I had hope. Of course they we're trying to tell me that they had everyright to play their music as loud as they wanted to as long as it wasn't past midnight. I'm like excuse me.

so I called the cops and they went to their homes and told them to turn it down. They also told them and me that they had no right to play there music as loud as they wanted to anytime of the day. I was told if I could here the music inside my home to call them and they would take care of it. LOL

Thankfully, they both up and left there homes (foreclosures). I'm not missing them one bit.

I would call the police and see what they say and if needed have the come out.

The guys that park 20 cars in their front yard and blare rap music actually live about a block away. :lmao: At least we can't hear them. :headache:

These people across the street usually have a lot of noise going on in front of the house (yelling at the little kids that live there, the kids running around and yelling in the street at 10 o'clock at night, yelling at each other in the front yard, etc...). The only time we can hear anything from inside the house is when this dude decides to listen to his stereo in the front yard, or has his car running in front of the house with the speakers blaring.

How do you find out what the noise ordinances are? Our city has a website that I'm trying to search through to find something. So far, all I've found has been an application to make noise if you're constructing a building. Is there a better way to look that you're aware of?

In our township the police won't do a thing unless it's inside the "noise ordinance" times of 10pm-8am. I think this guy is just asserting what he thinks is his own authority, entitlement, etc. Sounds like a control freak. He wants a reaction from neighbors, police, etc. Ignore it as best you can. I know, easier said than done. I bet he'll eventually get tired of hearing himself & his own music.

Call your town hall, township office, etc. They will know right away. Maybe even the non-emergency police number. In our township noise ordinance complaints are high. We have a lot of ATV (4-wheelers, dirt bikers, etc.) that love to make niose all day & night. If they're on private property the police can't do a thing until after 10pm.

Every place is different. The city where I live has different noise levels for different times of the day, but this is something that is enforced 24 hours a day. And it can be enforced on private property. Again, every area has different laws, so call your city or county and find out yours. A lot of local governments have their codes (ordinances) listed here: http://www.municode.com/Resources/OnlineLibrary.asp

This is tempting, I wouldn't *really* do it, but you can dream...

I think I'd have a really tough rap/club DJ come in with a mobile set-up and have him blast Shirley Bassey, Barney, DoodleBops, Hannah Montana, IT's A SMALL WORLD in a continuous loop (from your front yard, of course). This would be done in the middle of the day or after 9am and before 10 pm, this bozo probably likes to sleep in (if he works at all) and before 10pm so you don't run afoul of any late-night noise ordinances.
And I would tell all the nice neighbors in advance about it, so they wouldn't complain :teeth:.

TaraPA is most likely right...this jerk(sounds slightly inbalanced). He wants a reaction.

agnes!

Thanks so much for the link. I'm searching through it right now. Any ideas what the noise stuff would be classified under? Or does it vary from place to place?

If you found your city or county codes, there should be a search at the top of the page. I typed in "noise" and searched.

duh! thanks. :) I've been scrolling through the legalese on the left of the screen.

This reminds me -- my sister was friends with all the neighborhood moms -- a group of 5 or 6 women within very close proximity all with kids in the toddler/kindergarten set. One day they were in somebody's back yard, and this horrible music was BLARING from up the street. One mother shook her head and said "The nerve, really, of some people, that's so obnoxious!"

The other women started snickering -- it was HER teenaged SON! And he did it all the time -- turned his stereo speakers out his bedroom window and hung out in the back yard. I guess the acoustics of the house were such that it was louder outside than inside the house and she had NO CLUE.

:rotfl:

Just make sure if you call the police you do it from your front yard so they can hear the noise too :lmao: .

We did something similar to this when the neighbors on the other side of the wall in our townhouse were listening to obnoxious, bass-filled rap music for the 8 bazillionth time. We cranked up It's a Small World as loud as we could stand it... our kids (who are 4 and 2) thought it was the best party ever.

I think the neighbors got the idea.

I won't have to! I'll be able to call from within the comfort and conveniance of my own living room and the Police will be able to hear it just fine! :listen:
