Distraught over Haunted Mansion

I just read that it will be closed during our trip this year. In fact, it's closed all summer and that is UNACCEPTABLE. It's closed 6/6 - 9/12.

I can't find this info anywhere and would like to be able to read it. Where did you hear about it?

I'm sorry to hear that so many people aren't going because a favorite ride is going to be shut down, but with so many guests day to day, they have no other option.

Shutting it down during some other point of the year would only mean it would upset someone ELSE'S vacation. Have you thought of that? I'm not trying to be mean, but only gently point out that the world doesn't revolve around one single person's vacation.

There are millions of other things to do at WDW, and rest assured, they are just cleaning up the beloved attraction so that it will be wonderful for everyone for years to come.

It's on the main page of the DIS Boards information, and under the rehabs page as well.

HAVE to go in May, thats it, that seals the deal for ME!:thumbsup2

I look at the closing as a positive. Our last trip we rode Haunted Mansion and thought really needed work. I am glad Disney is going to refurbish and hopefully update the attraction. It is really in need or repair and updating!

This is how I felt when I was there in May and Pirates was closed. It stinks when your favorite attraction is not available on your trip, but it gives you yet another reason to plan another one. ;)

I don't know if you guys have noticed, but there no longer is a really SLOW season at WDW. So there is not a good time to close an attraction. No matter when they do it someone will be on here whining....

Exactly.

Things need to be worked on, it is one of the ways Disney keeps the parks working well and in good appearance. My DS (10) who LOVES the Haunted Mansion said this.."Oh well, we will just go on something else."

So I guess we will get over it by riding POC, SM, BTM, Buzz, SM, TTA, Pooh, Snow White, Peter Pan, Small World, Jungle Cruise, Stitch, the New Monster's Attraction, Philharmagic, Dumbo,...

I think there is plenty to keep us all busy.

Thanks for the reply. We were there when POC was closed. That was rough enough but the Haunted Mansion....I don't think I can stand it.

Does anyone know if they are just refurbing it or are they going to ruin it by changing something that is already perfect. If the latter is the answer, there will be 1,000 happy haunts because I'm going to KILL whoever made the decision.

I almost wish I hadn't heard about this.

DISNEY - if you're listening: IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT.

I think part of the problem is that it is broke, most of these major attractions have been running decades on a 1 month clean it and throw some bandaids on it refuribs and with a refurbishment of this stature they would want to get it done by the time MNSSHP started.

I've been down while some of my major favorites have been closed and I always add it to my "oh well guess we will have to come back list" .

I understand people being sad, but no matter when they did the refurb people would still be upset. We are going in November so we want it to be open then as well, but if it was not I would be able to still have a fantastic time, and HM is my favorite ride. I know summer is the busy time, but to not have it open for MNSSHP, that would be dumb. We went to MNSSHP last year and the HM was a big part of it, IMHO.

While I always enjoy the attraction, it's in dire need of some TLC.

From what I've read on other threads and websites, this is going to be a major refurbishment with some show enhancements as well (possibly including the madame Leota floating ball like they added to Disneyland's Mansion)

I've been to DL and DW and know have experienced the frustration of having a key attraction down. The only upside is you have an excuse to return. :yay:

I don't think they had much choice on the timing, because it needs to be open during the easter and Memorial weekend holidays, and all heck would break loose if it wasn't open for Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party.

This Summer seems to be the only period that works.

the worst part is going on this thread and reading replys from the people on this site who always take disneys side....its the worst the couldof waited till sept .

We are not taking Disney's side. We just understand that the refurb has to happen sometime. People vacation is September as well as any other month.

I totally understand the frustration. When my dad and I went in October, they were just finishing Pirates. In fact, it was supposed to be open, but they kept having "technical difficulties." And that was the one ride dad really wanted to go on. Fortunately, on his last day, we made it on. Was it frustrating every time we walked by POT and it was still down? Yes. Did it ruin our vacation? NO! There are so many other things to do, letting the fact that one ride was closed ruin our vacation would have been silly.

Honestly, if having the Haunted Mansion closed would ruin your vacation, maybe you should reschedule. I can't imagine it would be any fun walking around the park in that frame of mind.

I'm really disappointed that HM is going to be closed when DBF and I go back in August, but I really think it needs a good going over. When we were there last May we rode it 4 times throughout our trip (lines were amazingly short) and 2 of the times we were on it some technical difficulty occurred:sick: -once, the doombuggies stopped moving and the audio began to skip (we were in Madame Leota's room and everyone started to laugh because she kept repeating herself), the 2nd time we were headed into the cemetary and the doombuggies stopped again (very jerkily too, I got thrown into DBF) So, as sad:sad1: as I am that one of my favorite attractions is going to be closed, it needs to happen.

OP here. We're talking about the Classic Haunted Mansion. Down 3 months in summer. Yes, there are other busy times and it's getting to the point where there is no "off season" per se at Disney. But, Jan/Feb/March makes tons more sense. I know the world doesn't revolve around my one single vacation. But I would venture to say summer is THE BUSIEST time of year except perhaps the week between christmas and new year's. I know Easter is busy so that is why I say do it in Jan/Feb/March. I wish they could get it done Jan/Feb because I know it picks up after President's day for the winter breaks and spring breaks.

I can't help it and I'm not going to feel bad about the fact that this puts a damper on my vacation. Haunted Mansion =Disney. I guess I have no choice but to get over it or change my dates and I doubt I will do that because I'm totally excited about $125 at the Swan.

All I can say is I'm probably going to cry as I walk past the Mansion. I'll even miss hearing the coyote howl. I just can't imagine it. The more I think about it the more I think I may need to consider changing the dates. I love POC but for some reason it didn't bother me as badly as this...we were there when they were refurbing POC. Maybe what I can do is talk my DH into a "quickie" trip before 6/6. Like a long weekend. I'll ride HM over and over and get it out of my system. Perhaps that would work. IF we do that, I"m going to play close attention to details and try to figure out what ya'll are saying it's in bad need of a refurb because honestly I just don't see it.

I think I'm too engrossed in the magic when I'm there and the nostalgia of HM to notice silly things. My parents took me to Disney every other year or so when I was a child and HM was always my favorite. There is something so special about going back year after year and it being there...JUST LIKE IT WAS back then. That's what defines a classic.

Now, I've been to DL and I like SOME things about their version better. Like the floating head in the crystal ball...I can't remember the bride exactly. But, all in all, I like DW's version better.

We can debate this until the cow's come home and nothing is going to change the fact that this refurb will cause a lot of sad faces at Disney this summer. I still contend that summer is NOT the time to do it. Not just because of my trip, but all the kids who are out of school and looking forward to it and the people going back for the first time since they were children. I'll bet you if you did a poll the HM would be the winner if the question were: "If you haven't been since you were a kid, what attraction are you looking forward to seeing again?" POC would be a close second.

It sucks. I don't have to like it. But I just have to "get over it" I suppose.

That's all I have to say about that. Nobody can convince me, no matter what they say, that this makes sense. This being closing a MAJOR attraction during the summer. STUPID.

But we all have our opinions and that is what makes the world go around.

I was just in the Disney sites calendar and it says the haunted mansion will be closed June 6- June 30 I wonder if this site has it wrong or Disney?

:sad2: To each his own. I just can't imagine having a breakdown because one attraction is going to be shut down since it needs the clean up so badly.

I remember when I was 12 years old and my Mom, sister and I went to Disney World and we did not know that the HM was going to be closed. It was so sad. Still remember it to this day. :sad2:

Having just rode HM last week -- and I posted this in the three other threads about this closure as well -- it desparately NEEDS this work.

Other times to work on it??

FEB / MARCH / APRIL = Spring break.. third busiest time of year at Disney.

MAY / JUNE / JULY / AUG = Summer Break.. Arguably second busiest time of year @ Disney

SEPT OCT / NOV = Having the haunted mansion DOWN while they are hosting Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party? I don't think that makes ANY sense. Argue against that all you want.

NOV / DEC = Christmas Holidays = BUSIEST time of year.. I doubt very much they'd close it for that..

So when you narrow it down.. their two choices were SPRING BREAK or SUMMER BREAK. I'm guessing that with the El Rio rehab at Epcot, the launch of the Laugh Floor and whatever else we DON'T know about .. summer was deemed to be the lesser of two evils by management and the imagineers schedules.

There are some laws of physics at play here.. only so many imagineers.. working on x number of projects. You can't do them all at once.

--

It's more than just time of year folks. It's a marketing decision. It makes the most sense to do a rehab like this JUST before the MNSSHP debuts this fall. Plus there are other rehabs on the book.. engineering work to be done before .. tooling customized parts, testing new bits to be installed etc.

It's not a conspiracy to ruin anybody's vacation. It's a business decision. No matter WHEN they do it -- there will be a thread here and people will range from mildly perturbed to VERY UPSET.

It's ONE ride. If it really will ruin your vacation to miss it -- I suggest you either reschedule your vacation or re-evaluate your priorities. Cause Mickey-Forbid that some attraction might go down while you're there and then what?

I'll second that. Thanks for doing all the typing.
