Dissapointment for Hawaii bound DVC

:

Mouseaholic rumour - "Annaheim will be sending letters to cost centers today, deadline February 16 -DIDN'T HAPPEN!"[/QUOTE]

My entire department got letters from Anaheim. 30 years a CM. So did ESPN. So did Disney management on both coasts. No it appears it's time for the CM at the parks. Sad but true. It seems the letters are still going

Then jimmymac you are doing exactly what I accused Mouseaholic of doing - taking the bit of info you know to be fact and attempting to apply it to WDW P&R IN ORLANDO

Regular CMs in ORLANDO (not Executives that received the buy out package) have NOT received letters from Annaheim.

oh and jimmymac, I hope you noticed that Iger announced 50 executives took the buyout, versus your incorrect post saying that 600 had been laid off.

That's not how the news biz works. If ABC ignores this story because of their ownership, they shouuld resign their positions. News is news. When corporate ownership interrupts the news filter, the process is broken beyond repair

Idealistically, yes, the news biz should be a service to viewers & a watchdog on all things relevant to those viewers. At the end of the day, there are many factors that go into what is reported on in any given newsroom.

I agree with you that it should not be that way, but I believe that it is in a lot of cases. This probably isn't the setting for a discussion on ethics in journalism. Sorry guys!:thumbsup2

Not at all. I'm just agreeing that letters were indeed sent from Burbank

Regular CMs in ORLANDO (not Executives that received the buy out package) have NOT received letters from Annaheim.

The Orlando stations are now reporting that large niumbers of CMs at the parks are being laid off without the buyouts management receivedr

Do you honestly believe everything Bob Iger says?

Disney is dealing with current economy. They're trying to keep guests in the parks with promotions such as 7 nights for the price of 4. They're cutting expenses through restructuring. And Disney will adjust staffing levels in all levels in their Parks and Resorts based on actual attendance levels.

Nobody doubts that there are layoffs and schedule adjustments at Disney. Disney will jettison some dead weight, but there will also be good people who will find themselves unemployed because of where they fit into the organization. Unfortunately, people lose jobs during economic downturns, not just at Disney. Most companies need to cut spending, just as most households need to cut spending.

However, as tjkraz pointed out, none of this has anything to do with the resort that Disney will open in Hawaii in 2011. The only connection is that this and other DVC projects provide employment in the Disney Vacation Development organization. And, as tjkraz pointed out, this project will provide construction jobs (and eventually resort jobs) in Hawaii. So I don't see the point of criticizing the Ko Olina project from an employment angle. Without the Ko Olina project, there would be more people unemployed.

Disney Vacation Development is fortunate. It appears they lined up funding and are able to move forward on schedule.

Far from being some sort indication that Disney is evil, the project at Ko Olina is a bright spot in a bleak economy.

Instead of asking the question, "You really think Disney is stupid enough to begin construction right now?" it would be better to ask the question, "Are there other opportunities for a financially sound company like Disney to help restart the economy by investing in projects that will be good for the company in the long run and good for the economy and employment immediately?"

A note from my DH found in the LA times.

I suspect the poor castmember to recommended buying property (also in a poor part of the island) in Hawaii --- has now had his office moved from the basement to the area next to the trash compactor.

I agree, not good for DVC in Hawaii.

Hawaii's tourism industry is offering new deals, incentives and packages as it grapples with turbulent airline industry and Americans holding tight to their wallets. Officials on Wednesday unveiled a $4.5 million campaign to lure visitors for the remainder of the year. The effort is part of the more than $12.5 million in emergency funding that has been devoted by the state and businesses to combat a slump in tourism. Besides the turmoil in the economy, Hawaii this year faced the sudden shutdown of Aloha and ATA airlines, two major carriers serving the islands from the West Coast. The state also lost two cruise ships.Visitor arrivals plunged 17.3 percent in August compared with the same month last year, including a record 24.4 percent drop in visitors from the West Coast, according to the latest state figures. Visitor spending also fell 17.6 percent. Tourism is the No. 1 industry in Hawaii and the economic lifeblood of the islands.-LA Times

not good for dvc

Or, is it?

While U.S. tourism is a big deal in the islands, Japanese tourism is just as big, if not bigger!

I don't think so. The japanese economy is as bad as ours (well, the banks aren't). Hawaii is not a cheap flight either. And unlike Orlando and Anaheim, you can't drive there

It was the location of the proposed DVC that never appealed to me. It's the equivalent of building a DVC for New York City and putting it somewhere on Long Island or Newark. .
Hey! Just wait one minute! Long island is NOT the same as Newark!:scared1:

We already have a Costco, WalMart, and Target opening within the next two years. I'm guessing this is why Disney chose Ko Olina for the new resort?
Those aren't quite the kind of stores people want to go to the while they are in Hawaii on vacation! :lmao: They can find those in their hometown here stateside (probably was better prices). They want stores that are very different and unique.
