Dissapointed in HOJO

Chuck, the HoJo is GREAT, it's a 5-7 min. walk, especially if you walk the "special" way. LOL ......

Please do tell about the "special" way! I'm going to book at HOJO for only one night in March. I don't care about the pool or view since it's only one night. I want cheap err 'inexpensive' for the night since we already have a place in Carlsbad which is prepaid.

What building should I request or does it matter since I'm asking for the least expensive?

Most people will follow the crowd. They will leave the HoJo parking lot, cross Manchester (the street you turn on to get your car in their parking lot), and just walk down Harbor with the rest of the people. That is fine, but you have to deal with other people and their quirks (people do the strangest things while walking), along with unexpected semis delivering Pepsis and taking 10 minutes to back into hotel parking lots, and so on.

But if you lose the pack mentality, you will cross Manchester, then instead of going straight, you will cross Harbor at the light. That puts you on the park-side of Harbor, and it will be nearly empty of people. YOu will be able to walk at YOUR pace, and there are no hotels for delivery trucks to be going to.

Then, instead of going down to the other crosswalk where all the hotel-side Harbor walkers are going to, you will turn right when you see the taxis. You will walk amongst the lined up taxis, and you'll be parallel to the others who walked on the other side of Harbor, but just a little ahead of them, and you won't have to deal with the masses and, again, their quirks. You're walking along one of the shuttle stop "islands" at that point, and you'll get to the exact same bag check as everyone else. :)

When you leave, it requires even more bravery b/c breaking free of the pack is even scarier when you've been with the masses all day, but we want to skip when we turn to the left, walk down that same far island, cross between the taxis, and are well down Harbor (on the park side) before those we left the park with have even crossed Harbor to get to Captain Kidd's restaurant yet.

However, if you're wanting to stop at a restaurant on your way to HoJo, you won't want to do that...that will require you cross Harbor with the hordes. :)

Chuck, the HoJo is GREAT, it's a 5-7 min. walk, especially if you walk the "special" way. LOL And I too am wondering about the kids and noise comment. You're going to DL, of course you're going to have kids and noise, families go to DL, families stay at the hotels on Harbor......

All right, now I have to ask, what is the "special" way? We will be staying there in June and I am really looking forward to warm temps![/QUOTE]

The Special way was described by Bumber. :) Walk to the corner of Manchester and Harbor, cross and then cross again immediately. You walk down the opposite side of Harbor so you aren't dealing with crowds of people. Then cut thru at the end of the bus stop, walk thru the taxi parking and you come right out into the hub. A lot less people to deal with and much less stressful a walk. :)

People on boards tend to be interpreted as snarky by default. I give everybody the benefit of the doubt so don't worry about it.

I don't mind kids at all except when I'm trying to sleep. I've stayed at nice quiet hotels that have had families there and I've stayed at popular family hotels where rooms are left open and screaming kids run up and down the halls until 2am. I expect a certain amount of chatter when people are returning to their hotel. Some hotels have thicker walls if you know what I mean.

I was really just wondering if this was the type of place where parents let their kids roam the halls at all hours of the night or if the staff and patrons are considerate of their fellow travelers. The only reasons my wife and I chose the Anaheim Plaza was because the rate was fantastic and other people mentioned how quiet it was. :wave2:

Well, if people are letting their kids wander the halls then call the front desk and complain. Of course it's not the fault of the HoJo if people do that...I can say tho, in all honesty that there was only 1 time that I heard kids running up and down the halls. And we were in bed late, that's why I'm sure, they were allowed to do so. In my many many stays at the HoJo I've only had 2 noise issues, that one time and then once when we were in the very back corner of Bldg 2 next to the freeway. Otherwise it's been great. :)

We've stayed at the Hojo 3 times now and it's been awesome every time. We've always been in Building 2 and had no problems with noise. In fact even with being right by the elevator we heard no noise whatsoever.

Jennifer has been incredibly accomodating as I have called several times to change dates or make new reservations etc. Last week when I called she said, Oh I remember helping you. It's pretty bad when I call so much that I am now being remembered.:cool1:

Now, we have walked the special way before and it was a bit wierd because you feel so alone on the other side of the street. We are going next week- me, my mom, my sister and her kids and my 2 kids. I worry about walking alone back to the hotel when it's dark. Should this worry me? The last time we walked it was with my husband so I felt somewhat better.

I went last year with a group of women from the boards and we walked back at night. No worries.

Hmmm . . . I wonder what happened to the OP??? I hope she got through to local reservations today and changed her mind about their customer service.

:rotfl2: you described it perfectly!! lmao
That's exactly what I do...
:upsidedow Love to follow the beat of my own drummer.

ETA: Impeccable customer service making ressies at HoJo's & during all of my stays. (not counting the maid that walked into my room with a do not disturb sign up)
Big kudos to Lorealle, Jennifer and my favorite bell hop Bryan!

I figure, you'll be in the pack all day long, why start and end the day in one?

But really, on our first visit we stayed at PPH and walked our socks off b/c I didn't realize that the "secret" way to bag check wasn't via the well marked "to Disneyland" path (that took us alllll the way through DTD). And then we didn't break free the last 3 days when we moved over to HoJo either, walking down the populated part of Harbor.

In my head I would have sworn that the park-side way was covered in bushes and trees. I remembered it being unseeable from the road, let alone from the other side of Harbor!

But in reality it's open and easily viewable to cars passing and other tourists. And since the driveways on that side lead to official parking and taxis, it's also open to people working, and working for, or on the behalf of guests of, Disney, so I feel that's even better (they will feel more responsibility if they see something going on).

I well know the pack mentality, so I know the freedom when you break free. :)

I even have to break through hubby's pack mentality when we discovered the way into the esplanade area via the taxi area...hubby thought we'd get in trouble for walking in that area and really wanted to go up to the crosswalk (thereby losing all time advantage and getting back with the people), and I had to force us to take the shorter way.

DangerMouse... where is the beach picture taken? It looks very familiar to me and I am trying to place it:)

Where is the Hojo located? I'd like to be able to walk to the park. I'm not a very big fan of noise either. Is this more of a family friendly hotel with lots of kids roaming the halls? I'm picky.

We had quite the noisey stay. There was a band convention or something that week, so yes we had loud teens roaming the halls at all hours. Being quite loud. Plus kids yelling and running. With the halls being closed it really echos.

We had a Disney View room, and could also hear the freeway, buses coming and going at all hours. One morning they were working on the street next to the building, jack hammers and all. Then it was grad nights, and you could hear the whole party going on all night long from DL. Some of the worst nights sleep we ever had (my DH actually slept in the car one night, hoping it would be quieter behind the building where the car was).

Needless to say we were disappointed, and won't be going back. The room was okay, and the walk wasn't too bad. But we prefer elsewhere.

Thank You all for posting of your experiences.
I've been going back and forth with should my mom and me stay where we always do.. or stay at hojos.

I think for this upcoming trip we will stay with the familiar. Although i do appreciate all the thoughts and views expressed within this thread.

Thanks to the OP.

Please tell me you complained! After each disturbance! Please?

And that's a reason we dont' care about view rooms...we've gotten a Garden Pool room each time, and it's lovely and quiet.

But we might be going down in March during one of the Cheer conventions...my sister is performing in one of them (competing? whatever) and they are staying at the DLH. So I just warn anyone over the last weekened of March...cheerleaders are taking over the DLH. If my dad etc want me to come down they'll pick a place, so I dont know where I'll be, but i'm quite sure it's not going to be at the DLH....

(my point is, convention members can stay anywhere)

I walk back with DBF and my 2 kids, I never feel worried. And it's always dark, we love to shut the park down when we go. :)

I agree with Bumber, I really hope you complained!!! And I've never had road noise in Bldg 1, just the 1 time in Bldg 2 in the very way back corner. Even then I think it was more just me being unable to relax after our long drive down.

My hotel/motel tip: Doesn't matter where we go, we always bring a noise machine or small fan. The constant noise helps drown out noisy kids and loud convention goers. This can happen anywhere- fancy hotel or family motel. I sleep much better! :thumbsup2

So true. We stayed at the Crowne Plaza in Garden Grove and one morning we woke up and it sounded like a room next to us was having a party. At 6AM! It was SO loud just music and people sounding like they were jumping around and talking really loud. We weren't too sure what room it was coming from because we never saw anyone next to us the whole time. We called and complained to the front desk, but we told them we didn't know what room it was coming from.

And the noise machine also drowns out beeping medical equipment, right? Well, almost. :rotfl:

We did mention it to the front desk once, they apologized, but wasn't much they could do. If we were to stay there again I would try one of the other buildings, they sound quieter!

I think part of the problem was the week we were there. Between the school band convention and the grad nights!

Yeah you can't rely on other people to be conscientious of others. Heck you can't even rely on that these days in a theater....
I always bring our sound machine too. Lorealle does say they give out free earplugs in the lobby though.
