Okay, I need vacation planning help urgently. It appears my family may not be to keen on going to Disney again. We have been in 2005 and 2000. We are thinking about a Carnival Cruise. It seems the cruise vacation would be less expensive than Disney. We have never been on a cruise. We are 2 adults and 2 kids (ages 8 and 13). What would you do?:confused3:confused3:confused3:confused3

We decided to take a Carnival Cruise this year also. We are a family of 5 and it's still cheaper than Disney. Go to cruisecritic.com, lots of good advice. I see your in Dallas, so of course you can just cruise out of Galveston.

Good Luck!!

We were on the Triumph 2 weeks after it got out of drydock for refirb and updates, nice ship, good first time ship for you. It is out of NOLA, now. We got a great deal on a balcony, with 5 people for $2500. for 7nights.

you can also check out cruisecompetedotcom for good fares. it works like lending tree, where you plug in the ship and date you want and you have TA who send you what their best price is.

My kids love cruising more than Disney! I would also second visiting cruisecritic.com. It's like the Dis for cruisers!

I would also recommend one of their newer, bigger ships. They have so much for everyone to do, you won't want to get off the ship.

Have fun planning!

Before you book Carnival read reviews on CruiseCritic.com. Some ships get awesome reviews, some not so awesome....

We had booked a 4/3 deal at Poly for last summer and actually cancelled the trip and went on a Carnival Cruise instead. This was our third cruise (2 on Carnival and one on Royal Caribbean). We never thought we'd like cruising, but we love it. We still love Disney and will probably do that again next year. Carnival has some great cruises and it is cheaper than Disney. Last summer we took the Carnival Freedom from Ft. Lauderdale to Panama, Costa Rica, and Belize. It was fantastic! My kids were 10 and 12 at the time. (They were 8 and 10 on the first one.) There are a ton of fun things to do on board. There are activities for kids of all ages as well as family activities. My kids could spend all day on deck at the pool and waterslide. We played a lot of putt-putt too. We watched a movie one night on the huge movie screen. My kids love the free room service and never-ending pizza and ice cream on the ship. I could go on and on.
Disney is a very fun vacation, but not very relaxing. Cruises are relaxing and a lot of fun, too.
I think you should try it.

Thanks for the replies! Can a family of four fit in a oceanview cabin on the Carnival Ecstacy or will it be too cramped?:grouphug:

We just returned off of the Carnival Conquest last Sunday. It was a blast! It was the second time we have done this cruise. We would do it a third time in a heartbeat. We have two girls 10 and 8, and as much as they love Disney, they really loving cruising as well. Good luck!

We went on a family reunion--37 of us--last summer. It was a 4-night, 5-day out of San Diego, with 2 days in Cabo San Lucas. I'd never been on a cruise before, but it was really a lot of fun. Depending on what time of year you go, you can get some really good deals.

Sounds like a lot of families are trying this out for the first time. We are sailing on Carnival to the Bahamas on July 30. Yes, I will miss my beloved Disney, but it will be there another time. (can you tell I got outvoted by my family for what to do this vacation?) Hope we enjoy our cruise.

Not to hijack a thread, but are you going on the Sensation? We just booked this on Monday.

My family cruises Carnival every year (although we took a break last year and did an All-Inclusive in Aruba instead). We LOVE cruising and are looking forward to cruise #9 this summer! Cruising is an excellent value and there is plenty for the kids to do!

I, like others, definitely recommend checking out cruisecritic...lots of great tips there! I also recommend researching the ships before you choose one particular cruise as well. For instance, The Ecstasy is one of the smaller ones. It may feel a little less crowded and easier to get around than some of the larger ones that hold many more passengers. BUT, it is older and may not have quite the wow factor that some newer ships have. Some of the older ships have undergone serious rennovations (including Ecstasy), so that is nice. The ones that have the new water parks (called "waterworks") on them are especially fun for the kids! I think Imagination, Inspiration, maybe Fantasy have them.

To answer your question about the room size...all cruise ship rooms are small, but Carnival does have some of the largest in the industry. An oceanview room is definitely big enough for a family of 4. There is a good amount of storage space, and beds for the kids will probably drop down from the ceiling...they are out of the way during the day. It will feel crowded in there when everyone is trying to get ready for dinner at once or when fighting over the shower after coming back on the ship from a beach day, but the reality is most people don't spend a lot of time in their rooms anyway. If you can get a room with a balcony, you might want to do so...gives part of the family a place to hang out at times...a little more breathing room!

Have fun!

We were on the Sensation this past October. We got one inside cabin, and one oceanview for our family of four. Our girls were 18 and 12. It was really nice having two bathrooms and two spaces to be. We had planned that the girls would be in one room, so dh and I could have some time alone on the trip. But, it wound up being one adult and one child in each room and that was fine too.

Two things I forgot to mention. Our rooms were directly across from each other, made it very easy. Also, if you did the Disney day of service you could easily add one day at Disney before or after the cruise to get a quick "fix" for free!

Ditto about cruisecritic.com. It is like the disboards but for cruising.
I say, try a cruise. We love to cruise and do alternate between crusing and WDW.

Thanks for the replies! Can a family of four fit in a oceanview cabin on the Carnival Ecstacy or will it be too cramped?:grouphug:

Yes, you can all fit because the cabin will either have pullman ceiling beds or a pullout couch...but prepare for it to be VERY tight. Cruise ships cabins are very small. The ocean view and interior cabins on the Ecstasy are both 185 sq feet. (Compare that to one of the rooms in your house...roughly a 12x15 room, including the bathroom and closet area.) So, by booking a ocean view, you are basically only gaining a window...not any extra space. Depending on the pricing on the cruise, sometimes you can get 2 adjoining interior cabins (no window) for not much more money. The bonus is not only double the space, but you also get 2 bathrooms. Of course, sometimes it's significantly more expensive to do that...but not always.

Cruise ships cabins typically have very good storage areas. I've cruised on Royal Caribbean several times (not Carnival), but cabins are all pretty similar. You should have a double closet with a hanging area and shelf area. There will be a small desk area, with drawers and cabinets around it. There will also be some built in storage in the bathroom. It's nearly impossible to live out of suitcases on a cruise like you would in a hotel, because there's really no extra floor space to lay them, unless you take up the whole couch area. We always take a few minutes to unpack our clothes, and we slide the empty suitcases under the beds.

Like someone else said, you spend very little time in your cabin, so it is doable...you just need to be organized, and everyone needs to make an attempt to keep their clothes, etc put away so you're not tripping over the mess. We always take one of those collapsible pop-up hampers with us, to keep the dirty laundry in check.

As far as the choice between Disney and a cruise...I'd definitely do the cruise as it's far more relaxing. I think there are 3 or 4 different cruise lines that sail out of Galveston, so check prices on all of them. Compare the ships too...some of the older ships are smaller and have fewer amenities. I'm not too familiar with Carnival, but I know that Royal Caribbean Voyager of the Seas does 7 night cruises out of Galveston. That particular ship has a TON of things for your kids...rock climbing wall, ice skating rink, in-line skating, mini golf, sports court, Kids Club, etc.

Don't forget the extra expenses on any cruise...tips for the staff (they recommend an amount per passenger, including kids, and you just pay it once), and the price of excursions if you book those through the cruise line. If you're a good planner, you can do your research on CruiseCritic.com and figure out much cheaper ways to do the excursions by either taking a taxi or by booking them through local companies instead of the cruise line itself.

To compare prices, I would go to a site like VacationsToGo.com and see the different offerings. However, I always book through my travel agent after I find what I'm looking for.

If you are watching your money and are first time cruisers and won't miss what you don't have, I would strongly suggest two inside connecting cabins.
This way, all have their own bed (instead of couch or pull down from wall), the kids could have their own TV and night to veg and most important you will have two bathrooms and showers along with storage.
Just a thought and one you should check out how much more it would cost for 7 nights.

PLEASE go on cruisecritic to find out about whatever ship you decide and location. When you book, I would also suggest getting sandwiched in between two decks with cabins. What I mean is you want cabins directly above and below you. Also mid to back of ship will be better and for your first cruise, the lower the better for feeling less motion.
Let us know what you decide.
We are BIG RCCL fans but trying Carnival Dream in August for my dd's Sweet 16.
Enjoy!

Like others here, as much as I love WDW, cruising is cheaper and much more relaxing so we try to alternate.:)

With children that age, you could certainly fit the four of you in one room. I'd go with a balcony if space were an issue. The only time I'd splurge on two rooms is if I were travelling with teenage girls:laughing: because one bathroom, well...

Although I have stayed in an "inside" cabin, I don't really like them. If it's the only way I can go, so be it but I like to be able to see outside and I like the natural light in the room. If you can swing it, go balcony. There is nothing like breakfast on the balcony while you pull into port or a cocktail pre-dinner...

Have fun!

I would recommend connecting cabins. We did this last summer and the kids stayed in one and we had one. It worked out great and we all had plenty of room (and two bathrooms).

I think you will be fine but it will be cramped , if you can get a deal on the Suite I would do that . We are going to do a Suite this summer and it was 599.00 for the 5 day and then I think $179.00 for extra person after 2
We have done the Ecstacy a few times ( hate Progresso though:headache:) . I think it was last year that the ship went into dry dock and they redid it . They added a nice water area.
We did it do often so we could Scuba dive in Cozumel LOTS OF FUN ! THe day we are in Progresso we just do the spa for the whole day .

PM me and I will give you the name of the TA we use at Carnival , she will find you great deals. She once put us on the Ecstacy for 4 days at $ 169.00 Oceanview. We had to leave in 3 weeks but it was a blast !

I have don the Conquest but it was not as clean to me as the other ships I had been on .
