Disney's You're Instrumental Workshop?

Our kids get to do half a day at each disney park plus have a buffet breakfast the day the arrive at ak rainforest cafe and even have seats for fantasmic. and dinner at citywalk when their at universal. It cost them $735.00 a piece for their package.
Kim

WOW that's a really good price I think...let me look at ours...it was roughly $1200 (mine was less because we're flying seperately) - it included

airfare
offsite accomodations for 5 nights w/ 2 security guards from 10pm-7am
coach bus rental/transport while there
4 day hopper packets w/ WP&M option for
1 day at Blizzard Beach
1 evening at DQ
Beach/BBQ at Cocoa Beach
4 disney dining "tickets" - I'm guessing this is maybe a counter service? I
need to ask for clarification
Disney You're Instrumental workshop
Shipping company for all insruments to/from Orlando
& Continential Breakfast at the hotel each morning (so 5)

Did your band hire an outside agency? I'm just wondering if any group just has band parents doing it?

even have seats for fantasmic.

I forgot to add...OUR lovely travel agency has Fantasmic written on the itinerary for the kids...on a NON-Fantasmic night...I'm guessing they will correct it at the next meeting....unless of course they already know that they'll be adding Fantasmic's during spring break

At least your kids get to fly - our kids only have 3 nights hotel because the other 2 nights they will be on a bus. I am assuming the Disney dining tickets are counter service too. I believe our kids have to take their instruments on the bus also.

This is an outside agency doing the planning, not the band parents.

Our kids aren't flying either , they are staying four night off site, it's an outside agency too.

I did this at Disneyland in 1991 when I was in high school. It was a good experience to see what professional musicians did to create the music for the movies. We played the "Little April Shower" scene from Bambi. They didn't let us keep a video at that time because they said it was copyrighted. :sad2:

They basically gave us the sheet music and about 2 minutes to look at it then we ran through the toughest parts a few times then played the song synced up to the movie.

You are probably right - and I know my daughter is thrilled to be going to IOA - they have to choose either Universal or IOA - the mean mom that I am - I have not taken them to Universal yet. Mostly, because I want to wait until the Harry Potter section is open and DS does not like the thrill rides like his sister.

IOA is a total blast for thrill-ride junkies. It's not Disney, but it's very cool in different ways. Last March was my first time to Universal/IOA and I wasn't expecting much. I had no interest in going there - all I wanted to do was Disney. Going there has definitely changed my point of view - it was awesome. I just remember getting to the park and just running straight for the Hulk - there was no one else there. We (my friends and I) rode it 2-3 times with no line before other people showed up. It doesn't have the Disney magic per se, but it has its own charm.

My daughter's band was there last year during spring break. The way I understand it, they worked with someone from Disney to play the music for a clip of a Disney movie. Now that I think of it, I never heard about how we get a copy of that. I will have to check with the director.

Our band marched in the Magic Kingdom prior to the Spectromagic parade. They got a lot of positive comments about how professional and well behaved they were while "backstage". Of course we were very proud of them. A group of us watched from the upper level of the RR Station--great view.

By the way, we were not chaperones but went down to support the group and of course it goes without saying that if my daughter is marching down Main Street I am going to be there. It was so fun with a plane load of parents all going down together. Luckily we were not counting on hanging out with the kids. We saw our daughter one day for about 5 minutes. As an experienced WDW visitor, my daughter ended up being the tour guide. She was happy to share her Disney knowledge with 200 of her closest friends!haha

Have a great time!

That's already happening to my dd too...she has a group of about 10 kids that just HAVE to be with her while touring....They came over to our house during finals, and poured over my park maps & scrapbooks - dd asked them each for their top 3 MUST do's at each park...and is busy putting together her "touring plan"...since she can't use "best days/which park" because that's dictated by the band...she asked if she could use my Ridemax to plan their day.....I don't think I've ever been so proud:goodvibes

Have a wonderful time. My DD is in the color guard and marched before spectromagic last spring break.
Yes, things can change. They were supposed to march before the 3:00 parade but it changed to spectro about 2 weeks before they went.
We did not chaperone but made it a family trip and kept her afterwards for a few more days.
All I can say is I will forever have in my head the beaming smile on my DD face as she performed on main street and the crying I could not control as I watched her.
The kids did get time at each of the parks, but the IOA and studios too. I think they really liked the break.
One suggestion. The day of their color guard workshop they didn't get to HS until about 1:00. We had gone at rope drop (DH, DD,DS) rode all the rides while there was no line, but picked up fastpasses for my daughter and the 3 friends she was in a group with. She loved walking past all the other kids in a 45 min. TOT line with fastpasses!!!

Getting the fastpasses for them is a great idea. I know that they want to ride RnR Coaster.

The fastpasses is a fantastic idea! youngest dd & I are going to DS at rope drop too....& planning on hitting TSM right away....while we'd only be able to get 2 fastpasses for the kids...I'd leave the "which friend is worthy enough for my extra fastpass" decision up to dd.

I am kinda disappointed that they won't be marching down main street - kwim? Like a pp said..I would also be crying as I watched her walk down my favorite street in the world (thus my siggie line)....I know performing in Epcot & DTD will be great....but kinda takes a bit of the magic away from me at least......The band only goes to Disney every 4 years....so she will be out of hs the next time they go. They go on a trip every other year, and her junior year they're going to Australia...ok ok..yes a totally cool trip....but still, I'll miss that marching on main street thing!

It does sound like there were be several of us there at the same time :cool1:

Wow - Australia!! Our band goes someplace every year - but Disney every 4 years. She has been looking forward to marching down Main Street and I am sure I will be crying too.

My sons' band did it Feb '06 and I went as a chaperon. Here is the itinerary of our trip and how it worked out for us, kind of a mini trip report.

Details:

Northgate Flames Marching Band, Pittsburgh (Avalon & Bellevue), PA
65 kids
10 chaperons
2 buses
Stayed off Site (can't think of the hotel)
3 days in the parks (MK, Epcot, DHS)
All meals included except trip down and back. We were given tickets that gave you basically what you get for a CS meal on the DDP only it was for a very select number of restaurants.

Cost per student $460, per chaperon $560 (The band boosters paid $100 for each kid)

Left Sunday after dinner and 23 hours later got in Monday before dinner. We switched drivers somewhere around Charlotte and they where the bus drives we used all week

One of the kids left her contacts in all night and thought she lost it in her eyeball because she still felt like it was in her eye. All morning people were digging in her eye and trying to flush it out. Around lunch time we had to find a hospital, turns out it popped out of her eye and she lost it. What she felt was her that eye ball irritation from everyone trying to get it out. Hospital gave her some drops and told her to see her eye doctor when we got back.

Monday night was pizza at the hotel, included in the cost, and free time.

Tuesday we did the class that everyone else has talked about. The instrumentalists did the movie sound track thing behind Italy at Epcot and the frontline girls did a class somewhere in a MK backstage area. Their class was setup like a dance audition where you had to learn a routine as a group.

They try to limit the number of people that in the backstage areas at all times. For the instrumental class the they let the chaperons stay. In fact three of us, including me had to do the animal sounds for "soundtrack". Be aware that they are very touchy about pictures taken in backstage areas.

Our Director was very impressed with the class. The instructor was a professional Disney musician and he told great stories of who he has played for and how they have to do their jobs and perform on very short notice.

One story he told was that his group would have to "come up" with something for an intro for some star at some dinner using Tarzan music. They have to play it by ear because they never know how long its going to take this star, who turned out to be Phil Collins, to walk in the room and get to his spot. It could be 30 seconds or 5 minutes.

They then worked on the soundtrack. They did multiple takes and a tech in the back mixed them all together. Someone else was taking pictures. By the end of the class the tech had taken the photos and the sound track and put together a VHS video that he gave to the Director.

After that we went into a backdoor entrance to Epcot and had the day to ourselves. We all met up at the end of the day and watched Illuminations.

On Tuesday (Parade Day) we had a Disney breakfast buffet in a tent somewhere near the Swan. Here we had another presentation by another Disney performer who had played various characters in the shows. He told various stories of him messing up at performances and that they shouldn't be nervous about the parade. Our Director got some Mickey ears and we had a visit from a special guest. Yes we had Mickey all to ourselves.

We then went to MK and were told to meet back at Frontierland at 1:30 to get ready for the parade. They only allowed the Director and two chaperons to go back with them.

I then made my way to the Train station to get perfect pics of their parade. You don't march in the parade but before it as a "Special Preparade Performance". Around 2:45 I heard our band in the distance and then the booming Voice of Disney came over the PA system and announced the band. They marched down main street and exited by the fire station. they took a ton of Photopass pics and gave us a special photopass card. Here's the rub about the pics, no Photo CD for $99, Disney knows how to make money don't they.

We met back up and had the rest of the day to ourselves.

Thursday was DHS until 5:00 and from there we went to Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede after that back to hotel.

Left Friday at 9:00 AM and got back at around 7:00 AM with no problems.

Overall a great trip, our director was concerned that the class would be some token thing that was thrown together so the trip had an "educational element", but it wasn't. the hardest part for him was keeping his mouth shut and not trying to fix things and just let the instructor do his thing. He thinks it was a great experience to have the kids learn from someone else.

Hi Chartle - we are in Hampton Township - not far from Northgate. Sounds like a great trip. Your post had a lot of good info!!

Thanks!

Are you busing or flying? I knew some Upper St Clair Band parents that went in April of that year. They flew and also the chorus went along.

I couldn't imagine flying we like to keep our kids locked in a bus :) .

I think they left Wednesday afterschool and took two separate flights. They did more competion stuff so I think they had very little time in the parks.

They left Sunday at like 8:00 PM after going to park and maybe everyone got in by 1:00 AM and had to go to school the next day.

WOW Chartle - that's some awesome information! I'll have to tell dd to ask before she starts snapping pictures...I don't want her to get reprimanded by anyone in front of her friends.....

Really I think the marching in the preparade is probably the best experience...we'll see. The kids are excited to play at Epcot...

That's fun about having Mickey all to yourselves!! But stinky about the Photopass cd.....

Thank you so much for sharing about your trip

We had to be careful outside the building backstage at Epcot. They let them take pics of the sign on the building but nothing else. They also discouraged taking pics in the class.

Here is a pic of the area, there's not much to take pictures of anyway. Its the building right next to the parking lot.

But stinky about the Photopass cd...

It may have changed but you can imagine how many families would buy prints versus just selling a royalty free CD that 100's of copies could be made. I can't see Disney giving up that revenue stream. They had a pic of every kid to make sure eveyone could buy one.

Our high school band is also going, 3/20-25. Hubby and I aren't chaperoning, but we are going. The kids are disappointed -- they're scheduled to play at DTD when previous trips had played at Cosmic Ray's with the rising floor (only the jazz band got to do that). They're not marching either, but they are doing some clinics and some kind of competition. Our group is also going to IOA -- my son is disappointed because Collective Soul is playing at Universal Studios for Mardi Gras, but it doesn't look like they'll get to hear that group. My son is in the concert band, jazz band and choir, so he'll perform three times in the one day (he's a performance junkie, so that's ok with him). Looking forward to seeing our band and any others we can find!

We are busing - well the kids are, my husband is driving, and my son and I are flying. DH is leaving a day earlier and I did not want DS to miss too much school. He is already missing 2 days. Too many parents worry about cost, and I think that is another reason they take the bus rather than fly. Our trip is at the beginning of spring break so they will just miss 2 days of school. That is if we don't continue to have snow days that they will have to make up.

The picture is great - isn't it amazing what Disney hides from the public. I never imagined all those building behind Epcot.

You will be there the week before us. That is probably good since we are closer to Easter and it will be more crowded. Pat Benatar is playing at Universal in February - wish I could see that one!
