Resort Thread Disney's POLYNESIAN VILLAGE RESORT

I'm so happy we are doing our last Poly trip in April. The new DVC building they are putting into place where the Luau was looks horrible. It reminds me of a Staybridge Suites. Another DVC $$ grab....very sad.

My first thought when I saw this was that it's super generic looking. It would be really sad to see the charm/theming of Poly spoiled by more generic high rise hotels. Not to mention it feels off that they keep building more and more hotel rooms yet the parks are already jam PACKED. So more places to stay, more bodies..... it doesn't seem like more resort availability is going to help with the crowd situation. I wish they would address that by focusing on park expansion before cramming more people in.

Yes....but that wouldn't generate some Bob Chapek cash!

It's almost as if they're TRYING to ruin WDW! The Luau was charming; and a huge part of the Polynesian Theme. Now The Poly is becoming just one more Hotel Row! So sad....

Could this new DVC building be a replacement for the scrapped/delayed Reflections hotel?

This is so sad. It feels like they are trying to ruin the Poly for hotel guests. Pretty soon it will be all DVC. They already took the BEST 3 longhouses and made them DVC studios all while ruining the view with super expensive bungalows. Now, no more luau. As soon as construction starts, hotel guests will only have 3 non-concierge buildings that won't be right next to a major construction zone. No way I would pay regular Poly rates to stay in Aortearoa, Fiji or Tuvalu for the forseeable future. Total bummer :sad2:

Disney Vacation Club announces plans for a new tower at Disney's Polynesian Village Resort

Disney Vacation Club has today announced proposed plans to develop new Disney Vacation Club villas at Disney's Polynesian Village Resort.
New Disney Vacation Club Villas tower 2024

The new tower will be built on the site of the former Spirit of Aloha Dinner show at the Luau Cove with a planned opening in 2024.

Here is the full press release from Disney Vacation Club.

Just what we need! More guest rooms/guests and still no new parks!

That was my initial reaction too, but then I remembered how disgusted and angry I was about the concept art for Riviera and Gran Destino Tower, and how beautiful those resorts actually turned out to be in person. So I will eat a little bit of humble pie and reserve judgment for now.

Great article over at Disney Tourist Blog. I'd encourage you to read it. Some excerpts are below.

Look at the difference between BoardWalk Inn or Beach Club and the new casino tower at Coronado or the Fairfield Inn Des Moines Airport Riviera Resort. There simply is not the same depth of detail in the designs with new builds at Walt Disney World–they are not themed.

Personally, I think it’s very fair to say that Walt Disney World should aim higher as themed design and immersive environments are its calling card. Exterior design being “good enough” for downtown Anaheim should not be the bar by which Imagineering is measured. Something being sufficient to “complement” Angel Stadium is not quite the same as it fitting with the flagship Grand Floridian or iconic Polynesian. Those are exemplars of themed design, and if additions aren’t capable of matching their look, they simply shouldn’t be built.
At this point, I feel like I’m wasting my breath with all of this, though. If you don’t look at the concept art for the Polynesian tower at the top of this post and immediately think that it’s out of place, there’s probably nothing I can say that’ll change your mind. We simply have different tastes and expectations about the caliber of product Walt Disney World should be delivering given the costs and its rich legacy. To me, this is all very obvious, but I suppose reasonable minds may differ.

Getting into Trader Sam’s will now be nearly impossible.
Yup. Our only stay at the Poly was five years ago and we simply weren't able to get into Trader Sam's. It's like Cheapek and co are overcrowding the parks to the bursting point on purpose. They won't stop building resorts instead of new attractions until someone gets trampled after the fireworks. Thrilled our vacation in three weeks will be at Universal which only has 8 hotels for 2 parks instead of 30 hotels for 4. And so so glad I didn't buy into DVC when I was tempted to do so in January 2020.

Agreeing with what others say, it looks super generic. I feel like if you showed that concept art to someone with no context and asked what they think it is, they would probably say any of those generic modern looking high rises that seem to be popping up in every mid-large town. Then again, I also think the Grand Floridian villas looks kind of generic. They did a decent job matching the rest of the resort, but it just feels like it's missing the gables and charm of the original buildings.

I feel like this will always ruin my favorite Disney "secret" spot. I love the beach area around the luau cove and next to Fiji and Tuvalu. It's usually much quieter than the other beach spots around the lagoon and you can actually lie back and relax. Plus it has a great view of the fireworks. I have lots of great memories of getting something from Capt Cook and picnicing out there. Looks like from the picture the beach will still be there but I doubt it will be as quiet as before.

But my other question is just how fast is the DVC growing? I'm not a member so I'm out of the loop on a lot of stuff, but are they really selling so many units/memberships that they need to keep building these things?

If Disney is investing in another hotel building, I wish it was more value rooms. I think that's what a lot of people are looking for these days with prices for everything on a vacation (hotels, food, rental cars, flights, etc.) going up. I bet they could even do a super value level like Universal's Dockside and Seaside hotels and be successful. But I guess if people are still willing to pay for expensive rooms and expensive tickets they will keep making expensive hotels.

I don’t know how I feel about this addition. I actually don’t think it looks that bad, but it is going to add a lot of people to the Poly and I feel like the Poly is already a busy place. Like many of you already said, where are all these people going to go? The parks are already packed. And, the addition of another pool will be sorely needed. I think another QS location isn’t a bad idea either. Capt. Cook’s isn’t that large and it can get very busy. It will be interesting to see how this will change the Poly. I’m going to miss the Poly as I know it now.

I guess I will be the opposite here and say I am excited about this. Already looking forward to the add on offer to existing owners. Resale running about 180. Not sure what direct poly points are now but already thinking about it.

One thing I will agree with, the theme will be hard to match. I will reserve judgment until opening. I have yet to be totally disappointed with recent developments. Yes some underwhelming and others over what I had expected.

The top floors will command an incredible view of the magic kingdom. I would also not be surprised if views of Epcot fireworks or Hollywood studios would not be possible.

overall, looking forward to this project. This will be fast paced for Disney for a 2.5 year window.
