Disney's Future in Baltimore

There is an article in Today's Batimore Sunday Sun, front page about how the Port of Baltimore is considering expanding to bring in more cruise ships. With Carnivals' ongoing back luck, they may end of pulling out of Baltimore due to lack of sales...

Article discusses the pros and cons into expanding. Chances you have of bringing in a ship, then having it pull out after only a year...

Then in the middle of the article:
"If the MD Department of Transportation said to the port of Baltimore, "ok, we have $30 million that's unaccounted for. Where would you like to apply this money?" we'd obviously look at the cruise terminal." "I feel very good about the probability of a third weekly sailing here."

Disney, with 4 ships, hasn't shown interest, though White said talks continue.pirate:

Brown said the port could add value by successfully wooing a more upscale line such as Holland America or Princess, which is owned by Carnival

Interesting thoughts to ponder....and dream for!

I would have thought that DCL would look at Baltimore for 2014. NYC did VERY well. The main issue they had was Canada ports were very expensive. They could come out of Baltimore and go after 7 day cruises south. Late summer, fall would have been great times.

But who knows - maybe once this is complete?

Baltimore would be SWEET and it would service a large chunk of the mid-Atlantic but I doubt it would ever happen with DCL.

If I were a Port Authority this would be the big thing that would make me VERY leery about signing with DCL if the contract were essential to the survival of the port. They pulled out of both LA and Galveston early and didn't stay in NYC longer than one season. I'd take them in only as extra income.

NYC was a test. They did 8night going south and shorter ones going north (even nowhere). But the Canadian ports were too expensive, and keeping 8 night cruises only would limit them, specially since there wasn't much to go south with.

If they come back again north, it would only be for a limited time. I don't think they would ever sign a long term contract.

The problem with LA is the west coast in Mexico. TX didn't catch the extra traffic they hoped to. Miami is ok, (targeting foreigners) but even they had to resort to KSF deals, so who knows...

Their bread and butter is in PC - combine sailings with WDW stays.

I think a summer or two sailing from Baltimore to Bermuda might be a possibility but a long shot. I do believe that DCL will go to Bermuda eventually but the question would be from which port? My money is on NYC but would love to see it sail from Baltimore.
