Disney's Contemporary Resort opened October 1, 1971. In its planning stages, the resort was originally called Tempo Bay Resort. The Contemporary Resort guest rooms were assembled at an off-site plant at the rate of about 15 rooms a day. Construction was overseen by the United States Steel Corporation (CONSTRUCTION VIDEO). The rooms were filled with furniture and then inserted into the sides of the 14-story building. In the original concept for Disney's Contemporary Resort, guests would be able to walk to the Magic Kingdom's Tomorrowland.
