Disney's cleaning up sicky policy?

Not to gross anyone out TOO much..

But I'd really be way more concerned about the millions of germs on handrails, bars, bathroom door handles, sink faucets and everything else I touch at Disney every day than a little sicky on the bus floor.

It seems silly to point out, but they don't wipe down the guns and triggers at Buzz Lightyear after each rider... and who knows WHERE all those hands have been?

Granted, the bus driver cannot just stop the bus by the side of the road and wait for a cleanup crew, but he should not have loaded passengers at th4 next stop. There is a slip and fall hazard too.

OK, so that everyone can get a reality view of the limitations of the power of a bus driver. Since it was a slip and fall hazard to those getting off as well, let's take that scenario...you are an adult sitting on a bus, next to a puddle of vomit. The bus driver comes back and says...sorry but you cannot leave until the cleanup crew arrives. What do you suppose will happen? Chances are that the driver will have a matter of seconds to move out of the way before he is trampled by the crowd trying to get off the bus. You cannot hold people against there will...that's called kidnapping! Since all the people that were on the bus, no longer were we have no idea what action was taken before loading the bus again. Unless, it was cleaned to the satisfaction of all concerned, he would never have loaded that bus. I'll bet the farm on that!

I have been there, everything was done, based on my limited knowledge of how big the spill was, etc., properly.

Yuck... If you're going to run a business w/ the public you have to take care of this kind of thing.

I was at WDW just a week ago for 10 days... the cleanest bathroom I saw was at Olive Garden the day we returned back home. I think they've got a real problem with their tidiness, and you're right about the health concerns. They don't mind packing people in, but they need to re-create their "clean culture" and impose it on their guests.

I totally agree about the bathrooms. They have gotten 10x dirtier in the last 10 years. The dirtiest bathroom I encountered on my last trip was in the GF lobby!! It's a very elegant and beautiful bathroom, but the aesthetics were ruined by the pee on the floor, towels overflowing from the trash can, etc. I was really disappointed...

The bus driver shouldn't have to clean it up, I believe the parents should. They were the ones who knowingly brought out their sick child. The driver is there to do just that drive, he is not a personal maid. I mean if someone came to your place of work and their kid threw at your station/desk would you feel you should have to clean it. I do agree it was more than likely cleaned later on. As for Disney being dirty, it would get dirty if it were not for people who have the mind set "oh a disney employee will clean it". Yes you are there for a vacation, but I love WDW so much I could think twice about throwing trash on the ground.

OK, I have to put my two cents in. No one knows for a fact that the child was sick. There are SEVERAL reasons for someone to throw up. Puke, EWW, I know, however, maybe the child suffers from motion sickness. I for one have actually thrown up after riding on a bus, rollar coaster, ETC.. that doesn't make me contagious or prevent me from continuing on with my day. Usually the feeling passes after awhile, and the rest of the day goes on. Maybe this child has some form of motion sickness and was throwing up from that alone, and wasn't sick. Now for those of you who chastize the parents for dragging their poor sick child around, shouldn't throw stones. You have no idea what the situation was.
We all have the right to our own opinion, however, we should take some of the accusitory nature out of it.
That being said, I would hope that any parent would clean up after their child made a mess, REGARDLESS of the reason. Then have the bus driver ensure that the bus was cleaned to ensure the safety of the future passengers.

I love the DIS boards and all the helpful comments, suggestions, but I have noticed that there are too many topics that are so judgemental towards fellow guests, it is sad to think that some of the same people who talk about the Disney spirit, then go on to judge someone else. You truly can't know what someone's life is like, and unless you live in their shoes, can't assume to know what they are thinking.
As always, that is MHO and the beauty of it is, you can take it or leave it:thumbsup2

Ugh. I just got back from WDW and almost had a "bus accident" myself! I had lunch at Epcot, then later went to the Honey I Shrunk... 3D show. In the show, in the dark, I started feeling sick. I took my glasses off, looking around for an escape! I made it through the show, then headed home. I felt lousy on the bus ride home, dizzy and nauseuos(sp?) I missed out on dinner that night because I was feeling so ill. I tried so hard to avoid touching hand rails, washed my hands frequently, and used Purell as well. I have the tendancy to get sick on vacation and didnt want to be sick at Disney! The next day, I still felt queezy, but felt I had to soldier on. Big mistake. I got on the bus, and started feeling really, really bad. Then a ton of people got on the bus, standing, and I panicked. What if I throw up! I dont have anywhere to do it but on someones shoes!! I had nothing I could throw up into! It was the longest bus ride of my life! I had to focus on calming down because the more I thought about it,the more likely I would be sick. It was mind over matter.

I managed to get off the bus without incident at MGM, but I had to turn around and get back on a bus and go back to the hotel while my BF did MGM alone. From that time on, the throught of the bus made me sick! Every time we took it the rest of the week, I had to make sure I had a bag with me just in case! What a disaster! I was so angry that yet again, I am sick on vacation, I am wasting money because we were on the premium dining plan and I couldnt stand the sight of food for the last 4 days of the trip. Disney is a prime place to get sick with all the germs, food, dizzying(is that a word?) rides coupled with exhaustion from all the walking, long days of running from one activity to the next, and many times, in the heat....its no wonder people get sick!! I would think Disney if pretty used to it. I pity the poor people who have to clean up vomit. I can not imagine expecting someone else to clean up after me or my child. Had I thrown up on the bus that day, you can bet I would have been asking everyone for napkins in order to clean it up while apologizing profusely to everyone on the bus. Ugh. I feel sick again just thinking about it. I don't think I will ever get on a Disney bus again! LOL.

I mentioned motion sickness on page one of this thread, but the OP came back and said the parents said something about this being the sixth time it had happened that day. Regardless of what caused it, it's the parents' responsibility. We really don't know what happened after the OP got off the bus either. Also, a little puke on the bottom of your shoes will not make you sick and just sitting near a child on the bus isn't likely to infect you either. You step in all kinds of stuff all day long everywhere you go. As for being a slip hazard, not likely, as bus floors are made to be non-slippery so when people track in mud, rain or anything else it's not slick. Next time you get on a bus, look at the flooring. They tend to be slightly ridged rubber for that very reason.

>>> almost had a bus accident [myself]

Could you have gone to a rest room for maybe 15 to 20 minutes and forced yourself (modestly, not zealously) to vomit and get it over with?

Instead of "hold it in" hoping "it" would eventually go down the intestines normally but all the way anxious that "it" might come up at the wrong time such as on a crowded bus?

You might even luck out, after one vomiting plus a few hours of fasting you might feel better quite quickly. Gives your insides a chance to "rest".

You may remember from college (I do) all those phrases that describe unsavory things. At my college there was "^%*#&%faced" for drunk and "ride the porcelain steed" for my first paragraph above. I still remember on more than one occasion someone who got back from a party kneeling in front of the john waiting for "it" all to come up and out. Also I have seen someone who didn't quite make it, lying passed out on the rest room floor in a puddle of "it".

It was rare for students/partygoers back then to clean up after themselves, unless the persons in charge (such as in a fraternity house) made them. More likely the fraternity officers singled out some freshman to do the cleanup.

All those irresponsible students from back then are today's irresponsible parents and grandparents. Actually even back then almost nobody cleaned up after themselves on buses and subways.

Here is what should normally happen.

Guest vomits on the bus. Someone informs the driver (hopefully) When the driver finds out about said protein spill, the driver should apply Voban to spill at the next stop, he may also provide a towel to the guest to assist in it's containment until the driver arrives at the next stop where he can do something. Now it's the drivers call to continue to pick up guests or to continue straight to the final destination. Once the guests have been removed from the bus, it's either parked at a park to await custodial or it's taken to the maintenance facility to be cleaned up and disinfected.

The bus is not assigned another route (if proper procedures were followed by the driver) until it has been cleaned and disinfected.

A couple of nights ago I had a protein spill on my bus from a guest at PI. I was on the way to Coronado at the time. Only when I reached Coronado was I able to apply Voban. It was bad enough that I had to unload thru the front doors and I decided not to pick up guests. I called my coordinator, reported the Signal V and was told to pick up ONLY IF I thought it was OK, if not drop off my guests and bring the bus to maintenance to be cleaned. I was NOT made to pickup and the guests who wanted to return to PI from Coronado were pissed that I did not pick them up.

The point here is that If the driver does what he is susposed to, the spill will be cleaned before the next route and yes, the a guest may be given a towel to assist. BUT it is NOT the drivers responsibility to clean it up. Blood Bourne Pathogens training is given to custodial, not bus drivers.

You don't know that he didn't. Believe me all "protein spills" are cleaned up ASAP. Each bus usually has a kit on board to absorb and cover the "spill". It really depends on the extent. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have loaded new passengers without taking some sort of action to clean it up. Since these are bodily fluids they are handled almost like hazmat. If he was able to contain and cover it then he would have either taken people that were waiting to leave or waited for a cleaning crew or a replacement bus.

Depends on the driver. We were waiting at Ft. Wilderness and when the bus pulled up a small child who baorded just ahead of us went running down to the back of the bus, fell and hit his mouth on the seat. He started dripping blood all over the floor, the Mom grabs him and exits the bus. The bus driver sees the blood covered kid and points Mom in the direction of the lobby. He walks to the bak of the bus, sees the puddle of blood and then tells everyone waiting outside to go ahead and get on. Off we went, he never attenpted to cover the blood spill with anything or to clean it up.

Unfortunately, that driver did not follow procedure. I would think that his logic as, it was just a kid, probably not a health hazard and blood is not vomit in it's intensity and odor. I'm not saying the driver did the right thing in this case, I am just trying to think out what would have motivated him to not follow it.

You will have to forgive me for the analytical approach that I use. This is what I do for a living. Try to make sense of things that just don't always make sense on the surface. The above mentioned incident does not appear to have a defense. Blood should never be left unattended!

That poor child. Looks like yet another selfish adult who can't go at the pace of the children. What idiot would take their puking child to a park?

The same one who stands there yelling at them about how "they spent a ton of money on this trip and they're going to have fun whether they like it or not". If you're not willing to put the needs of your child first, no matter how much you paid to be somewhere or what plans you've made, you have no business having kids in the first place.

In a perfect world, if anyone in the family had the stomach bug, they would stay in the room until they felt better. Personally, I would want to. I remember a trip we took from Ohio to Florida when I was a kid, for my birthday. I got a stomach bug and stayed in the room while the rest of the family went on a sightseeing tour. It was better for them to be out and away (and none of them got the bug either :thumbsup2 ) and it was better for me to have unlimited and easy bathroom access. I wouldn't want to be in a park, need a bathroom NOW, and be faced with either running to find one, or get there and there's a line.

I agree 100% :thumbsup2 . I would stay at the hotel if one of my kids got sick on vacation. ALso I would cancel if they were sick before we left home to go to Disney. People are so selfish and that virus just spreads like crazy. This is my one and only reason to not want to go to Disney in the winter months. You know you will probably end up sick even if you use Purell and wash your hands 300 times a day.

I was extremely sick at MK last Sept. and had to go to first aid. They called for a van to take me back to our resort. I also heard them arranging a pickup for someone else. It was very nice for me not to have to wait for a bus and manage the long ride while sick (and also nice that other guests didn't have to be grossed out!) I was impressed with how they handled our situation. They also gave us information on medical care in the area.

-- my shoes squeaked when I tried to jump over the spot and landed.

Couldn't you have gone the other way? Like out the back door or the front door, whichever was in the opposite direction?
