I've seen various times for when Mara closes.... 11pm, 11:30pm and even midnight. Does anyone know for sure what time Mara closes?

We have a late flight into Orlando arriving at 10:12pm. It will be late, but I know we'd really like to eat a little something before we go to bed.

Anyone???

Thanks!!

Hi AKL experts! I couldn't get the search function to work, so I hoped you all could answer my questions. We are leaving for our first trip to AKL in just 1 month!
1) We have booked Savannah view (non-smoking). If I request a King bed room, where are these rooms?
2) Where are the people pens? Are they on all the savannahs/trails? Is there a way to avoid them?
Right now, I am planning on requesting at least Zebra Trail/Arusha savannah, but I would like to know about the King bed room locations. And I still can't decide if we should ask for a higher or lower floor (though I definitely don't want 1st floor). I would also like to request to be far out down the trail (however one should phrase that).

Our plane arrives at 9:30AM, so I am hoping that we might actually have a shot at getting our requests. I've never made requests before beyond "non-smoking". Is it true all the smoking rooms are pool view?

TIA!

Wanted to share a few pictures from our recent trip to AKL:

We were able to do the Wanyama Safari. Like most others have reported, I spent most of the time taking pictures of the giraffes.

The zebra in this picture is named Marty....but the giraffe is not named Melman.

We saw all of the red river hogs. The two that were hand-reared chased the safari vehicle all around the savannah. The other two litters are doing well, also.

The baby giraffe is getting big. I know our safari guide said that her name is the African word for "Impossible", but my kids swear that the staff at Simba's Cubhouse call her Poopsie.

Speaking of Simba's--my kids both LOVED it. The staff was friendly & helpful, and really tried to fine-tune the activities to each of my kids.

I just booked our 3rd stay at AKL! We are very excited to be staying concierge for the 2nd time. :goodvibes

We did the Sunset Safari the first time, so we thought we'd do the Sunrise this time. The days are Sun and Thurs right? Can you book at 180 days or is it 90? My 180 days is Monday!

So .. we will be there in March. Does anyone have any updated info on the construction? I have to say we'll be disappointed in the lounge is relocated. But I'm dying to know if the constuction really is about DVC at AKL! :sunny:

One more question .. when I booked, I was cancelling another trip .. moving around DVC points, cancelling ADRs, etc .. and forgot to make any requests. As DD25 has asthma, I always ask for NS for medical reasons. Do ya'll think I should call back and have requests added to my ressie.. or just let the IPO staff handle them .. or perhaps do both??

I am fairly certain those days are right. We're doing it on a Thursday in Jan 2007 and were able to make reservations 180 days on advance.

I asked AKL's IPO about the potential rehab about two weeks ago and was told everything is on hold and nothing definitive is planned. I think Kimmar noted on the unofficial AKL thread that she had heard something might happen in the spring. If so, I hope it doesn't affect your trip.

We are going on both Sunrise and Wanyama safaris, and I'd love to hear from anyone who has participated in these experiences. I love the pictures!

Hi to all! Just booked AKL CL for 3 nites prior to our magic cruise. I can help with some of this. :)

I emailed my requests to AKL IPO as well as had them noted on my ressie thru DVC MS.

We did the sunset safari on our trip in March 03 and it was the best money we have ever spent on a vacation. Maybe the search feature will work for you and you can find my long report! We're planning to do the sunrise on our trip in March. I'm calling them in the morning with my credit card info to hold it.

I didn't wait for IPO to get in touch with me. My 180 day mark was this week, so I wrote them. I heard back in one hour.

here's some info from Deb's site on both safaris...

Sunrise Safari Breakfast Adventure is available only to concierge guests on Sundays and Thursdays. You meet in the concierge lounge at 6:30 a.m., then departure from the lodge to Animal Kingdom is at 7:30 a.m. The tour, along the Kilimanjaro Safari ride path in Animal Kingdom, lasts about 45 minutes and includes multiple stops so that you can stand up and take pictures. Each of the animals along the way is described in great detail, since there is plenty of time.

After the Safari, you go to the Tusker House for a breakfast buffet, which includes both standard American and African items. Each person also gets a FastPass to Kilimanjaro Safari to experience it "the regular way".

Hours: Sundays and Thursdays, starting at 6:30 a.m.

Cost: Adults is $55.00 and for children (3-9) it is $27.50. NOTE: Park admission NOT included. A credit card is required at the time of booking to guarantee the reservation (this number will be used as a guarantee only, as the safari is charged to your room the day of the event).

Reservations: This event can only be booked by contacting the Animal Kingdom Lodge Itinerary Planning Office. Note that there is a 48-hour cancellation policy. The safari can be booked 180 days out from the day of the event.
---------------------
The Sunset or Wanyama Safari is exclusively offered to Animal Kingdom Lodge Concierge Guests. It is approximately 1 1/2 hours long and takes place on the savannas of Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge. It is meant to be a re-creation of a true African afternoon game drive and is an opportunity to spend time with members from the animal programs team learning about the natural history and management of the animal collection at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge. Photo opportunities of the animals and architecture of Animal Kingdom Lodge that can only be experienced from our savannas. Your safari will conclude with a true African dining experience at Jiko, just like the lodges in Africa where a multi-course meal will await you.

Hours: Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays about 1 1/2 hours before sunset at the lodge's Porte Cochere.

Age Requirement: Must be 8 years of age or older.

Cost: $150 per adult (ages 10 and up), tax and gratuity included; $75 per child ages 8-9.

Reservations: This event can only be booked by contacting the Animal Kingdom Lodge Itinerary Planning Office. Note that there is a 48-hour cancellation policy. The safari can be booked 180 days out from the day of the event.

NOTE: Wanyama Safari is not guaranteed with a Concierge Room as admission for each safari is limited to only eight participants.

Thanks to all for providing not just one but two chock-full-o'-good-stuff threads about AKL, where we'll be staying in December. These two questions may be answered somewhere, but I haven't found the answers:

1) Can you add to what I already know about Standard View rooms at AKL (which is what we've booked)? Here's what I DO know (and what I don't):
a. There are only a little more than 100 Standard View Rooms overall (thus, a decent chance for an upgrade).
b. All the parking-lot-facing rooms on Giraffe and Ostrich Trails (all floors) are Standard View.
c. Some rooms at the very beginning of the Zebra Trail (overlooking the roof of Boma) are Standard. Which rooms? How far out before they become "Pool View"?
d. Some rooms above the lobby which face the pool are also Standard View (also overlooking the Boma roof). Which floors? If you are on an upper floor, are they Deluxe Concierge?
Am I missing any other Standard View Room locations?

2) This is our first stay at a western-end-of-WDW resort when we'll have a car. I'm familiar with the grocery stores on the eastern end...are there any grocery stores near AKL (on the western end of WDW) that are closer than the east-end ones?

Thanks in advance...and thanks for all the fun "thread-reading" :thumbsup2

Bumping, as I'd like to know these answers also.

well, I did get an answer to my grocery store question on the other AKL FAQ:

...When you exit the AKL resort and approach a traffic light, which would be the light to make a left turn to go to AK, make a RIGHT here...it'll take you to 192, which has a Goodings(?) I believe.....

what is a bump? I have been meaning to ask that. :confused3
It's so the thread can be brought back up to the front of the forum so it won't get loss.

I do kinda hope that this thread survives along with the other "unofficial" AKL thread. I have read both threads and they are quite different. This one is more of a true "FAQ", while the other is very personal and "clubby". They're both great threads, but I hope this one doesn't die..
