Disneyland Vs. Disneyworld

DLR does a lot of relatively subtle things to keep the parks fresh for locals which can be lost on the once-in-a-lifetime guest. Things such as seasonal ride overlays, seasonal fireworks, and frequent attraction upgrades are things locals take notice of and affect crowd levels in a measurable way.

At WDW these minor changes would hardly move the needle at all so there is a lot less incentive for management to implement them.

I love both. DL was Walt's park and you feel that original charm. DCA's renovation is awesome! I think Carsland is superior to any themed land at either WDW or DL, plus they did a great job on the park entrance area. WDW has more parks and more to see. I don't see it as a "vs" but love both on their own merits. I've been alternating very couple of years. I was at DL/DCA last August for D23, then got a WDW AP for last November, also used it in May and will again in October. Next year will be DL again.

We love them both, but I have noticed that because DL is a 'locals park' and their local annual passes can cost as low as $16 a month, locals tend to use DL like a mall. This makes is really crowded at times when you think it shouldn't be, and it has gotten worse over time. That is the only thing I dislike about DL.

But if you know the 'locals patterns' then you can avoid the huge crowds. Early Entry is key. On busy days, the park can open for early entry as early as 7 am (official park opening being 8 am). Generally you have low ride times until 11 am or so, which is when the locals (who generally sleep in and don't make rope drop) get there. So get in 4-ish hours between 7 and 11-ish, then have a nice table-service lunch, then do shows or pool/hotel visit in the afternoon and return refreshed at 5 or 6 pm when the park is starting to empty out, to see the evening entertainment.

Disneyland is WAY more of a local's park, more along the lines of a 6 Flags (although MUCH better than a 6 Flags), whereas Disney World is a big time vacation stop.

I don't agree with this statement that we are along the lines of Six Flags...but, yes, Disneyland/DCA does cater more to locals (yes, I am one of them...20 minutes door-to-door, thank you very much)...and WDW is more of a destination resort. :thumbsup2 And I will say some Disneyland/DCA attractions are much better than WDW's (Indiana Jones, Space Mountain, Small World, Radiator Springs Racers, Matterhorn, Alice In Wonderland), but WDW has EPCOT and Animal Kingdom :flower3: It's a give and take, but I am definitely grateful for both Disneyland & WDW :thumbsup2

I've been to Disneyland once when I was about 12 years old, the rest of the visits have been WDW, but I know my DH swears by WDW instead of DL. I'm not sure why, I loved DL when I went when I was younger, but apparently he thinks it's second fiddle to WDW. :confused3

They're both great experiences, just different. If you go to one expecting the other, then yes, you will be disappointed.

There are some attractions that are bettter-MUCH better-at Disneyland than Disney World, but then Disney World has attractions that could never be reproduced in California. They both have their own pros and cons and its not the case that one is amazing and the other is terrible- no matter how much some people on both sides of it try to make it seem that way :)

And, to be frank, Tokyo is better than both of them anyway :)

A conversation with my 10 yer old tonight actually while he was reading Winnie the Pooh to his sister.

He asked me which was older wdw or dl? I respond DL is the original. "Really?" He asked. I asked why and he said he assumed it was wdw because it was so old there (Epcot perhaps?) and so many of the rides were falling apart. (We had tons of rides down off and on through tour stay there last month) next he says that maybe more people visit DL and that is where they put their money to make it nicer:rotfl: let's just say despite having been to wdw 6 times as much than to DL ...you can tell what park is this kids favorite.

We live about six hours away from DLR, but hadn't gone there until just last year (I'd visited once about 30 years ago, but not since). Similarly, I'd been to WDW two or three times as a kid, but not again until two years ago (one day only at MK) and again this past April. Four days at DLR, eight at WDW and...

I love them both. I love the whole immersion of WDW, but the friendly confines of DLR. The affordability of a DLR vacation where you can do "everything" in four days versus eight at WDW where you feel you've missed a lot even though you spent three times the money. (Unfortunately, when we were at DLR, both Space and Big Thunder were down and we did not get to ride either.) I loved the concept of the paper Fastpasses at DLR and DCA...but I also love the whole MM+ experience and how easy everything was. We managed all of our "must dos" with FP+, and we didn't know enough to plan correctly at DLR, but still managed to have a magnificent time.

In fact, I want to try to get DH to agree to a long weekend at DLR later this summer. We'll see!

Disneyland is amazing and southern California is a great place to play tourist. We had an absolute blast when we went and we often talk about going back. It tends to be pricey out there though.

I love disney world but since I grew up in Southern California so it stole my heart 50 years ago ((( love ))) Having been to disney world over 20 trips I still prefer Disneyland to MK park wise. I guess because it's the little things like its a small world looking amazing from the outside a real wow factor, haunted mansion being like a real mansion from the outside and a other small and big things that just make Disneyland one of a kind : )
As far as California Adventure it took a few years for me to warm up to this park ... But once Carsland was built I was sold on CA. It's really the most complete Land in any disney park IMO. From the theme, rides, restaurants and more California Adventure is just amazing : )
Crowd wise 2 parks VS 4 parks so disney world has more peeps who are at the parks plus to me it is certainly longer vacation for sure. People who go to Disneyland usually go to disney for 3 days, universal and Hollywood for a day, sea world for a day and then a beach day is also common. They sell a city pass for this as well with ... 3 day disney park hoppers, 1 day at universal and 1 day at sea world.

I'm a vet in both parks. I grew up going to DL and started going to WDW as an adult when my children were young. I like them both, and still visit both.

I think it really is apples to oranges even though they are both Disney and imitate each other in ways.

As others have said, DL is on a much smaller scale...all the way around! This makes it easier to hop between DCA and DL, or get in and out of the parks, but at crowded times the smaller park with narrow pathways can really jam up. When WDW is closed for capacity it is crowded and has horrible wait times. When DL closes for capacity it is difficult to move. Anywhere. Unless the crowd simply sweeps you along in a mindless direction without control. ;)

DL has many local visitors (a locals parks as some said). When "locals" go to WDW they generally still employ strategies to maximize their passes and time such as rope drop and avoiding already crowded days. When locals go to DL, it isn't uncommon for someone to say "HEY, let's go tomorrow". Forget about rope drop. You can see groups of kids arriving after school when the parks are open late. I have friends that like to go after their Thanksgiving meal. They consider it a good day to do space mountain, Indiana Jones and maybe Pirates, then watch some fireworks and call it a day.

DL has no room to expand and basically, it is now what it will continue to be. The 3 "on property" hotels are brutally expensive much of the time, and offer few perks compared to WDW resorts. Many many small/independent hotels are actually closer to the main gate. Even THOSE are pretty expensive for what you get, and some have a reputation for being downright filthy but still book to capacity frequently.

The rides are cool, even the old ones, sometimes just because they ARE the old ones.

I like WDW but often find it a bit overwhelming. The Disney "bubble" thing people talk about here doesn't actually do much for me. This is probably BECAUSE I grew up going to Disneyland. Seriously, we never ever went to Disney for more than 1 day in a row. Sometimes we would stay a night at the old Disneyland Hotel because you could take the monorail from the hotel to the park, and it was easy that way with young kids.

Sometimes I feel a little claustrophobic at WDW and 4 days in the parks is just fine with me. 5 days is a long trip, and I am ready to leave it all behind on day 6. :)

I don't think either one is "better". I think of WDW as "taking a trip", but we just "go" to DL. Hard to explain.

We love them both, but I have noticed that because DL is a 'locals park' and their local annual passes can cost as low as $16 a month,

Just to clarify, the lowest priced AP is $289 and the $16/month figure is the monthly payment after the down payment of $96.

WDW is great, but my heart of hearts will always be with DL!!!

DH and I are DLR vets planning our first WDW vacation for next year. So I can't speak to WDW experience, but here are some of things we love about DLR

* I feel that DLR has a type of romance and magic about it. Maybe I'm a giant marshmallow, but I feel Walt's presence in the park.

*It's cozy. There are attractions on top of attractions. You are never more than a few steps away from something new to see or do or try.

*Because of that, there is ALWAYS something to see. We've been there over a dozen times and still have new experiences every time we go.

*The parks are close to eachother. I love being able to hop back and forth. Truthfully, the transportation at WDW gives me the heebie jeebies. We stay offsite, and I can still walk to the park in under 15 minutes

*It's just easy. There's no advance planning, no thought. You just show up and enjoy. No need for ADRs, no touring plans, etc. It just seems effortless.

I feel like a lot of the things that people list as negatives for DLR are actually the things that I love about it. Guess it's just a YMMV kind of thing! :thumbsup2

I've only been to World once, but what I loved most about it was the ability to relive the things I miss from the disneyland I grew up visiting. Country Bears. Peoplemover. Circle vision movies. Rotating theater (although I grew up with America Sings).

Disneyland is much less stress. Want to eat in their most popular restaurant? Send an email to dining the week before. Everything is walking distance. Legacy fastpass is still there. I am planning my second trip to WDW now and I'm pretty sure I'll need therapy by the time I get there. (Which reminds me, I have to go check on availability for the Wishes fireworks party for the 307th time today ;) )

I have been to both and I can tell you this with all honesty.... In a park by park comparison Disneyland is better than Magic Kingdon... California Adventure is better than Epcot, Hollywood Studios or Animal Kingdom... If you compare rides, even the exclusive rides have similar counterparts at the other. Indiana Jones at Disneyland uses the same ride vehicle as Dinosaur at Animal Kingdom, Test Track in Epcot uses a similar ride vehicle to the one that they use for Radiator Springs Racers in Carsland. Disneyland has the Matterhorn, Disneyworld has Expedition Everest. If you look at a ride count between the 2 locations they are nearly identical......... That being said, as a whole Walt Disney World is better than Disneyland. Besides the theme parks they have 2 water parks, Disney Quest, 4 golf courses, 2 mini golf courses, and a sports complex. Not to mention a better Downtown Disney.
