We went to DW last year and LOVED it. Now I am trying to decide DL or DW again.

We went in September and loved it. We would like to go in September again. We like to go off season.

Here are my questions.

Which is better and why?
Are there condos or houses for rent near DL like DW?
We stayed on-site last time but I have read so many reports about better trips if you stay off-site.

We typically cruise for our vacations since we got married but DH wants to do land only vacations. All I know that kids will like too, is DW and DL. But before last September I had never been to either one.

Please help all you PROS out there. Thanks!

Welcome to the DLR board. September's nice. I look forward to hearing the answers as well.

Contrary to many people (it's not just you) it is VERY hard to compare the two. Impossible in my mind. Yes, they both are Disney resorts, but the atmosphere, parks, hotels, transportation, dining, offsite stuff are all WAY different. DLR attracts So. California locals and WDW attracts tourists. DLR can be covered in 5 days, WDW you can spend weeks doing new stuff. At DLR all you need is your feet to get around, at WDW you need buses, cars, monorails, boats, etc. DLR offsite hotels are sometimes closer than onsite hotels to the parks and WDW onsite hotels are all the closest hotels to the parks. They are DIFFERENT experiences.

After all that info, my vote would be DLR probably because you haven't been and it's good to see both. Then you can make your own decision on which one is "better" and plan your third trip based on that! ;)

Hello there! :)

I currently have an Annual Pass to DL so maybe I can help.

There are no houses or condos to rent nearby - not the short-term vacation kind, anyway. There are plenty of hotels close though! And shuttles that run back and forth, so that's not a problem. DB and I live within an hour's drive - so we never stay at the hotel (or any) - but his family lives in Northern Cali and periodically come down and stay at either the Disneyland Hotel or one nearby.

As for my choice - I'd go with Disney World :) But that's just me! I went in 2005, but I'm having withdrawals :scared:

If you do pick DL - hit California Adventure up too, no matter what people say about it being more boring (much like what people say about Animal Kingdom), it's worth going!

If you pick DL and have other questions, ask away!

They really are like apples and oranges.

They are both so great, different... yet similiar.

Disneyland v. Magic Kingdom: I love both parks but comparing just the two DL-MK parks I really like the original better.

MK has the space and logistics worked out better because they learned so much from building and running DL and they just had unlimited space down in Florida. Aside from that I think DL is the better park and here are a few reasons why:

Pirates is a truncated version in Florida being quickly built after visitors the first year after opening kept asking where the pirates were when the WDC assumed being so close to the actual Caribbean people wouldn't feel the novelty. They were mistaken! Plus, you can feel Walt's presence in POC DL!

Space Mountain is not nearly as fast and thrilling. Apparently to save money and to utilize a two-track, two-line design the WDC used the blue-prints from the Matterhorn for MK SM and it doesn't have the same verocity that the DL single-track SM has... that was built after Florida's SM which was the original. Space Mountain Magic Kingdom can handle more people per hour so the lines are not as long on a busy day as in Anaheim for SM mainly because it has two tracks, like the Matterhorn in DL as it is esentially the same ride with different theming. Space Mountain at Disneyland RULES!!

The Magic Kingdom has no New Orleans Square. To me, NOS is the best part of DL and it kinda bugs me that they ommited it for MK. Since there is no NOS in Florida there was no need to give the Haunted Mansion a southern look so it has Dutch colonial manor architecture which is cool, very cool but not nearly as neat as the original Haunted Mansion in New Orleans Square at Disneyland!

Adventureland is not as "adventurous" as it is missing one huge asset: Indiana Jones and The Temple of the Forbidden Eye! Great ride and yes the Dino ride at AK is great but it is not nearly as awesome as Indy! Also, my favorite food items at DLR (including DCA and Downtown Disney and Blue Bayou) is Bengal BBQ, located across from Indy... Yummy spicy chicken and veggy kabobs! I wish they had Bengal BBQ in FL, hopefully they will soon.

No Mr. Toad! You think Mr. Toad had road rage... I'm feeling some myself when thinking about how they pulled that ride for the bear and donkey. I hate how they killed the Country Bear Jamboree in CA but atleast Mr. Toad lives in DL!

No Matterhorn! I know, yes the Everest expedition but still, no Matterhorn in the middle of the park... I like to ride the Matterhorn bobsleds but I also just like to look at it from all over the park and you don't have the stare at the Matterhorn luxury at MK.

Of course there are a bunch of things about MK that I think are superior to DL but I'll leave that for another thread. If you look at the entire FL resort as opposed to the CA resort WDW takes the cake because it is so much larger and has much more to offer but straight up DL v. MK I'll respectfully take DL by a slim margin!

Also Disneyland was the park that started it all... It is the genesis, the park that made all the others possible. DL is also the one park that Walt enjoyed himself and that is never lost on me whenever I visit.

Both parks are endlessly fun and wonderful but DL has that magic, that intangible quality that only an original can have.

The fun honestly is going to both parks tons of times and realizing and learning and subtle differences and advantages between them. Either way, you can't go wrong but my advice would be to go wherever you have been to less.

Thanks DoomBugger ! :dance3:

That's a neat comparison of DL and MK.

I went to WDW 2 years ago and I cannot wait 'til this summer to experience the original DL in California. :cool1:

I absolutely agree with Dommbugger- DL is far better tan MK. Other things that we missed when we went to WDW-

Alice in Wonderland
Casey Jr
The Evil Queen looking at you when you are in Peter Pan's line!!

The facades of the rides are also much cooler at DL. We love waiting in line for IASW just so we can watch the soldiers and the train go through. You'll know what I mean when you see it.
The details seem laking at WDW. No stars over London on Peter Pan, the lights on Space Mountain

Toontown- forgetaboutit!! Now you may say that MK has Toon town but it was so bad that we walked in and walked out. We love Toontown at DL! You'll know why when you get there.
Additionally, we love to stay at Disneyland Hotel because when we are at Disney, we want the full Dinsey immersion. The only hotel at WDW with full Dinsey themeing was All Star Movies. To the point, we have never stayed at a hotel where the furniture is chained to the wall!!!
We live in Texas and noticed a definate difference in the visitors at WDW from those who go to DL. A lot of visitors to the World were rude and obnoxious and had no problem bother the folks around them. At DL, the folks picked up there trash, didn't beat their kids in public, smoke in places where they shouldn't and leave their butts everywhere.
We had fun at WDW but even DD6 said she prefereed DL.

I won't go over what others have said, but I will say this.

For a September trip, I would go on a trip to DL over going to WDW.

I think Orlando will still be too hot and muggy in September, plus it's love bug season (yuck), plus it hurricane season. Also, since they offer free dining at WDW in September, the crowds are bigger and it's impossible to get a table at a sit-down restaurant there if you didn't make reservations weeks, if not months, in advance.

September weather in Southern California could still be hot, but it's not humid, so it's much more comfortable. No love bugs, no hurricanes, and no free dining (thank goodness). Crowds are very low this time of year at Disneyland.

However, Disneyland Resort doesn't offer the huge variety of things to do that WDW does. For example, WDW has many more shows, entertainers, restaurants, and resorts. BUT.....Disneyland has a huge amount of rides, many which are superior to their counterpart at WDW.

Yep, it can be a hard decision (we go through it often), but that's half the fun.:goodvibes

And is it just me or are the Princesses SO MUCH PRETTIER at DL? DH noticed it and figured it was the supply of wanna be actresses. They all looked so much like the animated version it was scary!

So true, at DL whenever I see Snow White or Alice walking around they usually look insanely like the animated characters!

You gotta love the sailing ship Columbia too, they don't have one at MK and it is one of those historic things in DL that Walt oversaw and approved personally. I was below deck on Columbia a couple weeks ago and she is starting to look like she needs a refurbishment. I hope they do her right, she is a special ship!

Thank you all.

Restraunts are insanely crowded in September. Fortunatly my TA got me ressies but we still had to wait, an hour to eat. I will never do that again. If I go during free dining again we will only eat CS food and snacks. We did not do much of that this time but the lines looked shorter.

September is the only time DH and I can get off work at the same time. So that is when we have to go. It is very, very hot in Florida. I have only been to CA once in my life so do not know about the weather. DH has been many times and would move there, if I would just say okay.

We are also Texans! I love Texas! It is also very hot in September.

I love all the reports! We will be there 2 weeks. Not sure what we would do the rest of the time if we went to CA. Although DL seems more like our style from what you said.

If you have 2 weeks, there are lots of things you can do. My family and I love San Diego. There's also Newport Beach, Hollywood, or you could do a trip to N. CA to see San Francisco and the Wine Country. And of course, there's always Yosemite. Search "California travel" and you'll find many sites with tons of information, and you can order free travel guides as well.

I would vote for DL if you have never been, then you can compare them yourself. I will say that we have gone the past 3 years of free dining to the world and had no issues with anything, weather, bugs or the dining itself and crowds were still low, so I wouldn't count out DW because of that reason alone.

I *LOVE* Disneyworld and for an extended vacation I would pick it everytime.

With that being said - I think that the original Magic Kingdom is the best at Disneyland. The attention to detail is amazing !
