I am thinking of making a trip to California in March during my son's spring break. We have already been to Florida and my goal it to visit every state.

Anyone know which area would be good to stay so that we can do both Disneyland and Universal studios? I have tried searching online and can't figure the distance between the 2 and which area would be best for this kind of trip.

My other alternative is to stay 3 days at Disneyland, 1 day of transition and 3 days at Universal...thoughts anyone?

There really isn't any good mid-way point to stay at between the two. You have the greater Los Angeles area, which I would include Universal Studios; and then alot of industrial or residential areas and then the Anahiem area.

If you are planning multiple days at both parks, I would stay in one area and then move to the other in order to avoid traffic and an one hour or more drive. If you are planning only one day at Universal, I'd stay around DL and make the approximately one hour drive on the Universal day. Just be sure to plan around the rush hours or your driving time can easily double.

I would probably spend one more day at Disneyland and one less day for Universal Studios. There's just more to do at Disneyland. Unless of course you also plan to go to Magic Mountain which is about 20-30 minutes away from Universal Studios. For hotels near Universal Studios, I would check the Universal Hilton. It's very nice and the food there is very good. A bit pricey but well worth it.

I agree that you won't need 3 days at Universal. It's only one park here and I think it can be covered quite easily in a day unless it's a summer weekend.

Unless it's very crowded you do not need multiple days at Universal. We always stay near Disney (highly recommend HoJo Annahiem) and then just spend one long day at Universal. The drive is about an hour, we always arrive shortly before the park opens and stay until closing, and we are able to do everything we want. Universal is a lot fun, but the one in Cal is just not that big.
