How long does it take and is the traffic horrible? We will have a rental car are thinking about getting the Southern California citypass, which includes one day at Universal.

Are there any shuttles that go from Anaheim to Universal? That may be an option, as well. Thanks in advance for the info!

It seemed like it took forever, like 1-1.5 hours to get there and on the way back it took even longer because we hit horrible traffic.

Man that's a bummer! What hours of the day were you traveling?

We had it take 55 to 1 hr 45 minutes always at 0800 in the AM, August. Sometimes it is just miserable but it does not stop us from going.

Weekdays will see rush hour heading north from Disneyland until around 8:30. We always leave around 8:30am or later and have never had bad traffic getting there.

When leaving it seems the first 20 miles heading south are always busy no matter what day or time.

We may wait until 9am, traffic makes me crazy! :car:

Is Universal doable in a day? And, how about driving back at night? Is it all highway and safe at night?

It is safe as any freeway in the LA area. For the most part the traffic moves along. You can do UHS and City walk easy in a day.

OP, yes there is. Grayline/coach america runs a sevice to Universal
they pick up at several off property motels and deliver you back to where they pick you up at. Sorry i don't have a link for them. call your motel and ask about it. Most can even book it for you.

Bye Don

We just came back from Disneyland and did Universal in one day from Anaheim. Originally we were going to take a shuttle from our hotel in Anaheim to Universal but it would have been $110 for 2 adults and one child with Grayline or VIP tours!

For that cost, you should rent a car and that is what we did. Still cheaper even paying parking ($15) at Universal.

We did not find the traffic horrible we were travelling at 11:00 a.m. and were back in the evening. We found a GPS very valuable in getting around!

Thanks everyone! Now to talk my DH into it. Adding a day in at the Candy Cane Inn subtracts a day in San Diego, our ultimate destination. But we go to SD every year and we've never been to Universal. I MUST convince him!

Question: Currently we are in Anaheim Monday morning checking out on Thursday. Can we fit Universal into this schedule, or should I add another day, checking out Friday??

Oh Tink, I would always go for adding a day onto my vacation!!!! And you need your SD fix, don't subtract a day from SD ever!!!! (I am biased about SD)!!!! :dance3:

Momrek, i am sooo jealous! I would love to live in San Diego! That's one beautiful town you have there. Someday, I going to win the lottery as retire on Coronado.

In the meantime, I have to decide whether I can deduct a day from SD. Don't know if I can! As it stands, we get in at 10:30 at SNA on Monday. So, I truly believe we would be checking into our hotel by noon. We could hot foot in right over to DL and have noon til closing there. Then we'd have a full day Tuesday, taking a break in the afternoon to rest for a bit. Wednesday could be Universal day. Then Thursday would be early checkout and a few hours at DL. I'd want to leave by 2 to make check in at our SD hotel around 4pm. Does this sound doable??

Ohhh you and me both!!! I would love to spend the rest of my days on Coronado and especially at the DEL!!

I think your trip sounds awesome!!! And you may find US a little quiet during the mid week giving you and your family a chance to get on everything!!! ::yes::
