Disneyland Secrets

There used to be Mermaids in the submarine lagoon. Now I am not near old enough to have been able to witness them first hand, but I have heard its true. How cool would that be if they came back with the new Nemo ride!! Wishful thinking I know!!

These photos are great!

I would have loved to have seen mermaids at DL!!

- Disneyland is actually built on a slight slope. why? Because Walt wanted people to work their way into the park, going uphill. This also makes the illusion that all the building is taller. Walt also wanted the downhill to make it easier to go home knowing ppl would be tired.

I see that you are a cast member and although not recently I too was a cast member some time ago (the 80's). We were educated about Main Street in a different way?? They told us nothing about a slope but that the buildings were built inward slightly so that the castle would seem further away (as to give the appearence of a LARGE park) and then at the end of the day when everyone is tired and you look down towards the entrance it would have the opposite effect (giving the appearance that you didn't have far to go). I heard the same thing recently on a TV show about Disneyland. Did you also hear this info?

I am old enough to remember the subs and mermaids. :sad1: Frighteneing that I can say that.
But not by much!!!

Did you know the there used to be a pirate of the Carribean show at the rivers of america? aka why there is a pirate ship :)

Is there a hidden mickey book/guide out there for Disneyland like there is for WDW? DH and I love searching for HMs and cannot wait to find new ones while we are at DL.

How funny! My friend just told me about this a couple days ago...

Apparently, they had to stop the Mermaid thing because teenage boys would constantly jump into the lagoon to get closer to the mermaids.

Judging from those pictures, I can't blame them. :rotfl2:

:confused3 where's the bathroom??????????????:scared1:

i'm not sure if this is true or not, but someone told me that the old man in the beginnig scene of pirates of the caribbean is there b/c the whole ride is his dream, if that makes sense, can anyone clarify this?

also, in the same scene of potc, u'll hear a banjo playing some song, but if u look around, there is no banjo to be seen.

It's just something someone posted in the ether in an attempt to explain why such an apparently out-of-place scene exists. The sign at the loading dock says "Lafite's Landing" so it was decided that the best explanation was that the old man was Lafite and the ride consisted of his memories of his days on the Spanish Main.

This is correct. We were told this by our tour guide when we were in DL in June of 2005. The whole ride is the old man's dream.

I never saw an answer to the Secret Bathroom question. I've heard of it, but I don't know where it is - Fantasyland perhaps?

btw, my FIL was an ironworker in CA and he helped build the Matterhorn and Dodger Stadium. Of course it's way cooler that he helped build the Matterhorn! :thumbsup2

Hi & welcome to the DIS, Quest4Kingdom~

This is true. Back in the '60s real "mermaids" used to sit on those rocks and wave at guests. My mom remembers the stories about the sailors jumping in the lagoon to swim to them. If you go to DL in the near future you can actually see footage of this on the First 50 Years film that is shown in the Opera House.
