Disneyland Reopening Speculation Superthread

To get things back on topic here... what website/link/etc. do you usually use to watch Newsom’s press conferences?

I’m hopeful, just a tiny bit, but we’ll see what happens! I haven’t put any effort into our December trip (too much sadness!) but if we get some news I’m ready to go into planning extraordinaire overdrive!! 😅

(For those wanting to talk schools, there’s been a really active thread about it on the community board- I’ve been on there a lot too as a parent and educator. Helpful to share info, commiserate, etc.)

I logged in to check my bookings for September to find my Jet Blue flight from PDX to LGB was canceled. I never even got any notification! I'm waiting until Thursday to see about rebooking. I figure I have 24 hours to cancel and I am worried if they announce an opening of the park ticket prices will shoot up.
Then again I hate the idea of booking yet another flight that will likely be cancelled. So torn!

When they announced the opening that never happened, how much lead time was there?

P.S. I accidentally put this on the Hawaii closure thread last night. I am such a dork and they probably think I am crazy. LOL.
That's a Long Beach thing, not a Covid thing. Long Beach messed up and was charging Jet Blue all sorts of fines when the planes were delayed past the curfew and the had to land and pay the fine or divert. Long Beach also would not build them the facilities to allow international flights. Jet Blue took the ball and went home. As a Long Beach resident, I'm really going to miss Jet Blue - that was a colossal mistake on the city's part.

Can you connect through LAX? Not my favorite but that's the flight we took. Don't worry, there will be flights. Check Southwest too.

Hospitalizations are flat for LA county today, at the same number as yesterday. But there are less confirmed patients in the ICU and suspected patients are down. The per capita rolling positivity rate has not been updated yet.

As crazy as it may sound I think Theme Parks following all the current Safety Protocols (distancing, mask wearing, sanitation, outdoor dining, etc) are probably safer than schools opening. On the other hand I firmly believe that schools opening are more important than Theme Parks and other entertainment venues.

I somewhat agree, although there really is a LOT of variability between school districts and HOW they open up. Our district, for example, has placed air purifiers in EVERY classroom already. They are also not having lunch on campuses. The day has been shortened and kids will be dismissed earlier and eat at home. I don't know that most districts are going that far. I am very confident in our district safety plan...it is QUITE thorough. You can't say that for all districts.

It is similar to how businesses are "interpreting" the guidelines. We hear about the difference in how smaller local amusement parks are doing compared to WDW, for example. In this instance, I'd trust Disneyland inherently more than, say, Knott's or Legoland. I think DL has a justified argument for opening soon. Very soon. They have a very strict set of safety standards.

Some interesting news. The Governor is being ordered to respond to the lawsuit against him re: school closures.

https://californiaglobe.com/section...-gov-newsom-to-justify-school-closure-orders/
He must respond by Friday.

This could have interesting implications with other business sectors if the courts rule in favor of the parents/schools on this one.

ETA: They are finally calling him out on his "science and data" stance on all the closures and asking him to justify the decision, since it goes against the actual science and data.

I like this post 100,000 times.

I agree..... although I think theme parks are important because I think jobs are important. The school openings are so dependent on the district, it’s finances and the size. So much easier for Rancho Santa Fe Elementary to open than a huge elementary in LA or San Diego Unified. Disneyland opening would be a pretty streamlined process compared to that.

Using the model that is WDW, I think DL could absolutely be opened right now and the schools could apply a lot of the measures there to get them open too. Unfortunately, in CA, it seems like we are being driven a lot more than FL by a "misery loves company" approach. The thinking goes, how can you even think about going to an amusement park during a GLOBAL PANDEMIC? Well, we did. It was safe, Covid did not spread, and mentally we are in a much better place now.

Notice I said WDW is a MODEL, not lessons learned. "Lessons learned" implies that there was some Covid spread, WDW made adjustments and moved on. That's not what happened. The measures implemented in WDW go well beyond what it takes to contain Covid and it works. There will need to be some differences in CA due to the make up of the typical guest. WDW has a lot more vacationers that spend the whole week there while DL is nearly entirely locals coming for the day. Different, yes, but I am confident Disney has already thought this through.

And I'll shy away from discussing schools, but shame on CA for not taking what WE KNOW works at WDW and applying it here. We sat indoors and ate in two restaurants - that can be done safely, we sat in several theaters and watched shows, that can be done safely. Do you really think getting a haircut is riskier than either of those things? No way. Schools are not much different either. You just have to see the safety measures as your ticket to getting back to normal and be diligent about doing it. Wear the masks, use the hand sanitizer, keep your distance, wash your hands, get your temperature checked daily, etc. Do those things or STAY HOME. It's simple and it works. There is no need to argue about it or live in fear.
Thank you so much for your reply. I agree 100%! Have a great day!!! You Rock!! :D

The comments from Disney execs yesterday have definitely served to up pressure on CA. I don’t think it will change the government’s plan but I am surprised how widespread the “Disneyland is ready to open” news story went. USA Today, Fox Biz, numerous local outfits. Definitely went wider than the usual suspects of OCR and theme park blogs.
I hope so! When they had to postpone their original reopening date they basically blamed the state for them not being able to open. They are ready! They have the plexiglass in place, strict mask and distancing rules. Just going to DTD, you can see how thorough they are when it comes to how they handle everything.

No hotel cancellations today?

I was cancelled for VGC for 9/17. For some reason, they do not send emails to DVC when they cancel our reservations. I only saw it when I checked my dashboard since I figured this would be the week that they would cancel it. I have seen no one else mention cancellations though.
