Hello Everyone! 
It's been a while but I figured with this time of year rolling around again I would give an update on how it all went.
My friend and I had a blast, of course. The crowds were indeed intense (NOTE to anyone who is claustrophobic, this may be an issue for you!).
At one point after watching the show on the IASW building front our entire group was picked up and carried with the crowd that was making its way toward the IASW entrance that had just reopened. It was a little scary to have our feet lifted off the ground as we were carried away by a mass of people. Other than that particular moment, it was a great trip! We probably won't go back that close to the holidays in the future but we are glad we did it once! 
My boyfriend at the time fared...OK. I did end up getting us a hotel room at the Castle Inn and Suites and he retreated to it once the evening rolled around and the crowds got more intense with everyone waiting for all the shows/parades/etc. For anyone asking if I would do it again this way...no, I wouldn't. In fact it was this whole Disneyland trip that broke us up! Kidding! However, I do think that taking him at that time of year wasn't a wise choice. If I were going again with a Disneyland first-timer who also dislikes crowds I would go at a much less crowded time. He was pretty stressed the whole time and didn't really enjoy himself despite my best efforts. So to anyone facing a similar dilemma, my advice is to wait for a more off season time.
Also, below are two photos I snapped in the afternoon on 1/1/14 just to give you an idea of the crowds (which were better that day than on 12/30/13). They were taken right around New Orleans Square and the bridge over POC.
