Hi everyone,

Thinking of going to Disneyland, Legoland, Legoland Waterpark, Sea World, San Diego Zoo, San Diego Zoo Safari in December.

First off, is December a good time (weather wise and otherwise) to go to all the above?

Also, I was hoping you could tell me how many days we'll need at each park?

Do you have any tips when going to the parks... do's and don'ts?

Thanks in advance.

You will need one full day at Sea World, the zoo, the Safari Park, and Legoland. Unfortunately I believe the Legoland waterpark is only open during the summer months because of weather/temperature. Most agree that you need at bare minimum 3 days at Disneyland, but the closer you go to Christmas, the more days you'll need because of crowds.

We really enjoyed Seaworld at Christmas time. The night version of Shamu is a special Christmas version with a large chorus singing Christmas songs while the whales put on a show. Very nicely done. The Christmas sea lion show was hilarious. Theres also ice skating available on a rink built in front of the sky tower. It's a great time to go but can be cold at night.

Legoland is fun for toddlers but most kids older than 8 or 9 will find it boring. The Zoo is one of the best and biggest in the country and worth the full day it takes to see it all. The Safari park is also very good but would see the Zoo if you could only see one.

Disneyland: 2-3 days
I'm sure other people have way more to say on this than I do. ;)
Legoland: 1 day (water park not an option, as others have mentioned)
I haven't been here in years, so I have no idea what's good and bad here, but I do remember having a blast at a ride where you got to drive your own car and you got a 'license' if you passed the test at the end. Don't know if they still have it.

SeaWorld: 1 day
Also make sure not to miss the special Christmas activities - this last year they even set up an outdoors ice skating rink! Also, make sure not to miss the new dolphin show - it's amazing! The Wild Arctic exhibit is also not-to-be-missed.

San Diego Zoo: 1/2-3/4 day
Definitely check out the pandas, the new Elephant Odyssey exhibit, and the children's zoo area. The bus tour can be a good way to get your bearings to start off - the zoo is laid out on a hill, and can be a little confusing to navigate through at first. It's also nice to wander over through the Spanish Village Art Center and the Prado area of Balboa Park from the zoo after you've finished.

San Diego Safari Park: 1 day
I haven't been in a while, but I've heard the actual safari section has been updated and is supposed to be really good. Also, don't miss the evening Christmas specials at either the zoo or safari park - not sure which they'll end up putting it at. Lights, crafts, it's really fun. :)

Have fun! Also, while in San Diego, I would recommend getting some Mexican food in Old Town, and if you happen to be in town one of the weekends they do the Bay of Lights show, definitely check it out!!! It's an evening boat parade, where people decorate their boats and put on a holiday light show free to the public.

I think you could do LL and Sea World each in a day. We just spent one day at each a couple of weekends ago and didn't do everything, but we live pretty close by and figured we could just return another time to do the things we missed so we were somewhat casual in our approach. It was our first visit to each, and we haven't made it to the SD Zoo or WAP yet. I personally love DL in December and would love to spend 4-5 days there. It can get crowded, and you'll be able to take it easy and do everything if you spend that much time.

I just posted my LL post visit notes in another thread - http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2670710.

For Sea World, here's my notes. (This stuff may be obvious if you've already started trolling the boards.)

1. You can get 20% off by showing a Southwest frequent flier card at the gate. I couldn't find my card and just printed off a copy at the hotel and that was good enough for the discount. I also brought a coupon just in case that I ended up giving away to someone behind me. Here's the coupon. http://www.visitcalifornia.com/media/pages/funspots/2011/SeaWorld.jpg

2. Be prepared for a lot of extra charges on top of admission. Animal feeding sessions (dolphins, seals, sea lions, rays) are all $6 each. The sky tower ride is $2. The other pay ride was closed, so I don't know how much that one was. Squirting people on the raft ride is $0.25. And so on.

3. We arrived early around 9:30 and the front part of the park was open. The sky tower was taking people up, though it was foggy in the morning so decided to wait until later to go up (and then we didn't get to it at all, but it wasn't a huge deal for us).

4. We lined up at the rope near the Dolphin encounter. Talking to a park worker, he suggested starting at the dolphins and otters and working clockwise around the park. Just like at DL, for some reason people usually go the other way. We headed straight for the dolphin exhibit at the rope drop. The line for the dolphin feeding was immediately long and the session filled up fast. By the time we were done, the session was closed. There were only 2 feeding sessions that day, and you could both feed and pet the dolphins if you paid your $6. Children under 3 were free.

5. During the shows the rest of the park was slightly emptier. The line for food after a show let out was super long. They were smoking ribs at multiple places. We ate at the Carribbean place, which was just okay. I thought there might have been more choices at the other bbq place (Shipwreck Reef). The menus at the park do not match the menus on the Sea World website. My husband and I split the full rack of ribs meal (comes with corn and a dinner roll) plus a side of fruit and we were full. The kids meals can come with either a side of fries or carrots and raisins.

6. At the Shamu show, the splash zone is well marked as the lower 16 rows. I didn't think people would get wet at the top rows of that zone, but they did! Wear ponchos if you sit there, especially if you're below row 10 or so.

Have a great trip!
