Disneyland is attempting to ban some cameras

I had a shocking experience tonight. I have been an annual passholder at Disneyland for years. Our family goes to Disneyland at least once a month. On most of those occasions, as recently as last week, I brought my camera (Nikon D50 or D300). Everything was great until tonight. As I went through the security check I was told that there was a problem with my camera because it had a zoom lens. Apparently zoom lenses are no longer allowed in Disneyland Resort theme parks. After getting into California Adventure I asked about this new rule at Guest Services. Initially the folks in guest services did not know what I was talking about. They called security and were told that a new rule was initiated banning zoom lenses. However they could not tell me the difference between an acceptable camera and an unacceptable camera. The only explanation I received for the rule was that people were some how abusing the privilege of bringing in a camera. I was told I could comment on the policy to Guest Communications at 714-781-4669.

After getting home I looked on the Disney web site and found the following in a list of items that cannot be brought into the park.:

"Professional cameras and recording equipment. (Reporters must make prior arrangements with Disneyland® Resort Media Relations.) Folding tripod stands that can fit inside a standard backpack are permitted."

What a ridiculous rule. First, it makes no reference to zoom lenses. Even if it did it would be arbitrary because point and shoot cameras can have optical zooms of 10x or greater and they are not banned. Second, how do we know what a "professional camera" is? Some might think my D300 is a professional camera. My D50 certainly is not a professional camera. Do you think the average security person at Disneyland would know the difference? Anyway, cameras are not professional, people are.

Disney if you are listening, you are going to have some very unhappy people at your parks because of the over reaction of some suit who probably does not have a clue about photography.

Wow! I have a D40 and a 17-70 lens I was going to bring but maybe I should put the kit lens on it if they are going to give me a hard time. What a stupid rule!

What? That's ridiculous. What am I going to do, hit someone over the head with my 75-300? I admit it would make an effective weapon, but that would damage my zoom.

THis. Is. Not. Acceptable.

I can bring a tripod but not a zoom?

Thats the stupidest thing ive heard all night.... I cant believe that Disneyland would do that... sorry but im not about leave my extended zoom camera in my hotel room. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. Security safe or not... its NOT gonna happen. What if its the only camera you have??? Sorry but im not about to go and give up the chance to take pictures or video of my magical memories I dont get very often.

Grrrr now im completely outraged....

zoom lens = detachable lens.

what do you need to zoom is so close to photograph anyways?

My camera has the detachable lens, but I cant take a picture without it... the camera just wont function. Its not the best professional camera but its not a cheap one either....

This I doubt will last very long. There are thousands of people walking through those gates every day, and with the amount of cameras they are gonna have to take away from people, there will be a lot of angry visitors. Especially if your visiting over seas and didnt know that rule. You cant take that right away from paying customers.

um WOW.

see, now i just bought my canon 40d a few weeks ago in anticipation of our trip this next month. the idea was to get some AWESOME shots. i'm going to be really mad if they don't let me bring it in.

i use the zoom to get parade shots and shots of the kids on rides. i'm a freak, but i'm also a scrapbooker, what can i say.

BLEH.

This disheartens me . I'm hoping that this will not be a problem when I go because this is a main factor me wanting to go on our trip. I started taking a photography class at University and was so stoked about showing off Disneyland at school. BOO.

I guess what I'm gonna do is have my zoom towards the bottom of my bag and hope they don't say anything.

Yikes. This kind of shocks and disappoints me.

I know a lot of concerts, shows, etc. implement this rule, but I would have never thought Disneyland would...

Boo.

That is the silliest thing I have heard yet!!!!! I have a point and shoot with 18x optical zoom (how much digital?). What makes mine legal? Someone must have used a detached zoom as a weapon. Why the tripod restrictions? So, it fits in a backback? It still expands!!! I guess I'll have to leave my tripod home. BUMMER!!!

This is ridiculous and everyone (including Disney) knows it.

Still and video cameras are now blurring the line of professional vs. consumer, and you cannot "ban" consumer cameras.

If Disney wants to start squeezing their most ardent fans... then so be it. They will do so at their detriment.

Amateur photographers at Disney only serve to promote the Disney cult, catering to a fervent fan base who is anxious to spend their money on all things Disney.

This will only promote bad press.

I wonder what middle manager was involved with this decision. Perhaps Disney has not turned a corner as I had suspected.

What are they afraid of???

I can only assume that they are trying to protect fellow park guests from being photographed without their knowledge or consent.

I'm thinking paparazzi or peodophiles with long distance zoom lenses.

They probably also want to prevent magic destroying behind the scenes shots from being taken.

I dunno :confused3

It is always the honest ones who are punished the most by rules like this.

The question is do they have this rule at disney world. I am just curious. I find this to be a stupid rule. You know someone said paparazzi or peodophiles but what isn't saying someone with a regular compact camera with a great zoom cannot take pictures of people. Shrugs.

Do you think this has something to do with the Miley Siress Birthday Party??

I'm skeptical. This could have been a temporary measure for the birthday event that was misinterpreted as being permanent.

Britt Dietz and his monster lens have become a fixture at Disneyland. He has plenty of friends and fans at the park. Disney has done plenty of dumb things - stopping his photography in the park would be one of the dumbest.

where did you hear this news? I cant find anything on it except one article of one man in one of the parking lots being told not to take pictures anymore of the parking lot :confused3

I only have one camera, and it has a detachable lens. I do have two lenses, 18 - 50 mm and 28 - 300 mm.

I have used the zoom one for parades mostly, detail photography. If you compare my picture of Tink on the first float with the one my friend (who had a point and click camera) took you know why I use it. ;)

It counts as semi-professional camera here (Canon 350D) and it has never before posed a problem. This would really be a stupid rule. I guess this means I'll have to haul both lenses overseas and hope for the best.

If they want to protect other visitors from unbeknown being on pictures, they got to totally ban cameras. And as it has been stated before, this won't work.

And honestly speaking, during our trip last year the security was way more concerned about my pin bag than about my camera. So what's next, the pin traders?

Disney always have a reason on why things are done. Im sure there is a good reason why they are doing it.

Personally, i rather not see super big lense for a few reasons, i believe it invades many people's privacy. I know, it sounds stupid but i hate it when people take like really really close pictures of me and then i find it out on the internet. It really sucks.

Now for the why a tripod and not zooming lense, Zooming lense contains glass which Disney is afraid that if it breaks, it can be a very dangerous hazard. Remember, Disney stops people from bring glass bottles fearing that if someone drops it, it may shatter and hurt someone.

Cheap camera vs. Professional Camera. Perhaps, people are blaming Disney for breakage of their good high quality camera?
