We are staying at the Fairfield Inn. We've been to D'World six times. Seventh time is the charm...we are going to where it all started.

Any suggestions or hints for us newbies to California? Flying into LAX and driving to our hotel in the afternoon. How is traffic in mid afternoon?

What time should we arrive for Toontown madness in the morning?

You can expect traffic to be bad. I don't know for sure how far LAX is from the DLR area (as I've never been to LAX--always fly out of Ontario) but mid-afternoon is part of rush hour(s) here in S CA. Toontown Morning Madness starts right after park opening so you'll want to be at the gates well before park opening to make it back there in time.

Look at Hydro Guys and Mary Jos tips stickey. A ton of info for WDW vets for their first time at DL. :goodvibes

Have fun!

Hey KCMike, we are also from KC too. We will be there October 18 and 19 in the parks. The biggest difference in my opinion between WDW and DL is the weather. California's weather is so much cooler and less humidity. We actually prefer it over WDW because of the weather. Also because the LA/San Diego area have so many other areas to enjoy. You are so very close to amazing beaches, etc. The one thing I was disappointed about was the castle is so much smaller at DL. I was surprised about that. Fewer disney parks to choose from, but it is still neat to compare the differences. Don't miss the Indiana Jones ride. I don't think they have it at WDW. The ending is amazing. Also make sure to ride the Matterhorn because I don't think WDW has that one either. Have a great time.

LAX to the Fairfield (we stayed there once as well) mid afternoon should take 50 min. - 75 min. to drive the 30 miles. Most afternoons there is some intermittent traffic.

I agree with tinkermell. These stickys (found at the top of the DL page) are essential reading.

Also, regarding "tips" advise us:

- Dates (& days of week.)
- Ages in your group.
- What you like to do at WDW.
- If you already have tickets & if the tickets have EE.
- What type of "tips" you want.

Alot of knowledgable folks here. Answer the above questions & you'll get alot of info.

Have fun at Walt's Park. :thumbsup2

My first tip: try not to laugh too hard when you see how small the castle is. :)

Then walk back to Fantasyland and see just how charming it is back there. It's magical.

Wife and I....three kids 13,10,10

We enjoy all of the four parks at WDW.

We arrive on a tuesday and fly out on a sunday.

Plan on doing Downtown disney the first night and then D'land the next day. Then taking a day off and going to the best beach (Which one?). I would love to drive up the northern coast and get as far as i possibly could.

The next two days (friday and Saturday) going commando. The park is open late and I can't wait to judge their fireworks and fantasmic against the World.

Must see's for me:

Alladin musical
Indy
PIRATES
Matterhorn
Space Mtn
Afraid about Splash mtn. It's my favorite all time ride at WDW and heard bad things about it here.
Haunted msn.
etc..

Can you walk around Disneyland hotel and Grand Cali?

Which beach is the best. I don't mind if I have to drive 5min or an hour. i want picturesque. This is the first time for the kids to be out west.

Hope we get to fly over Grand CANYON and the desert.

Any ideas are welcomed.

Is the disney store/soda fountain on Hollywood blvd worth the trip?

Alot of good questions! Hope you have taken the time to read Hydro Guys tips!

The best beach. Wow! There are so many I don't know where to start. The closest would be Huntington and Newport, which happens to be our favorites. They are what you would classify as a "So Cal Beach" that you might see on TV. At Newport you can walk the strand along beachfront homes and go on the pier. Right off the Pier is Charlies Chili. Good for breakfast and lunch. If you go little north you hit Huntington Beach or "Surf City USA." Here you will find lots of surfers, sand volleyball and lots of people. We love it here. Up the street from the pier is another hole in the wall called the Sugar Shack. Yummy breakfasts too. Or out on the pier is Ruby Tuesdays, and good hamburgers. For a nice dinner try Dukes at the start of the pier. The strand goes along here too and you will see skaters, bikers, walkers, runners, or you name it. It's fun to people watch. For a treat along the strand try the Cheese Strips. They have served these nachos for as long as I can remember, and we always get them when we go. Also in this stretch of the PCH you will probably see more EXPENSIVE exotic cars in one day than in your whole life. My DH loves to car watch!!! Now if you want a more classy beach then try Laguna. Very artsy and high class, but a beautiful beach. If you have time, do drive up the Pacific Coast Highway "PCH" north to Malibu and Santa Barbara. Santa Barbara is beautiful and has a cool pier Stern's Wharf with shops and food on it. At the end of the pier is a walk up counter that serves fresh shrimp, crab or whatever is in season. Up the from the pier on State Street are a ton of fun stores and places to eat. This downtown is beautiful and very spanish. I love it!!!!! And in Malibu there is a great place that has been there for years called Neptunes that also serves shellfish and so on. Yum!!! I know others have their favorites, but these are ours. Oh and we didn't even get into going to San Diego!!

Next.....Yes you can walk around the Disney hotels very easily. The night that you do DTD, you can take in the hotels. They are all right there.

You will still like SpashM. WDW's might be a tad bit longer. DL's version doesn't have the full blown boat of characters singing, or side by side seats, but I believe the drop is higher at DL.52' Can anyone please offer their two cents here?
Other rides;
Mr. Toads
Alice in Wonderland
Casey Junior Trains
Storybookland
Buzz Lightyear- the guns come out of the holders vs. stationary.
Grizzly River Run. The highest raft ride in America. Better themeing than AK's.
Californian Screamin- Kind of like RnR but not in the dark. It's a mile long ride.!!! DD's favorite!!!
ToT- my personal favorite of all rides. And I'm 51!!! I do think that WDW's version is better. I like the fifth dimensional room. But CA's does have another spin that you might enjoy!!???? :rolleyes1

Now for fireworks. Until I saw the Remember fireworks, I thought Illuminations was the best. But not after I saw them. I think what makes Remember so special too are the songs that go along with the fireworks. Be sure for your first time to sit in the hub towards your right nearest Tommorrowland facing the castle. lf you sit on the left, like I did the first time, some of the trees block the fireworks. Anyways, until you've seen them, it's hard to explain how wonderful they are.

Most people like DL's version of Fantasmic better, but alot of WDW vets don't like the ideal of sitting on the ground waiting for the show. It just depends on the person. I have no opionion cuz I didn't see it in WDW.

And yes the castle is small. For alot of folks it is dissapointing. :sad2: But the Matterhorn is the focal point of DL. I can remember as a little girl (now you know that was a long time ago) coming down the highway and spotting the Matterhorn. That was our landmark for DL. It still is!! The first time we came back to DL after being at the MK, my DD said, "It is small compared to WDW's."

OK enough of my rambling!

Geesh, Forgot to mention TSI Pirate's Lair. It's really cool now. A friend of mine's son played for over an hour, and wanted more time.

Yes, be sure to read Hydroguys tips on Fastpass -- you're going to love how easy it is to ride Soaring here and to park hop!

Ride all those things that WDW doesn't have:
Alice in Wonderland
Mr. Toad's Wild ride
Storybook Canal -- I know it looks like it's only for little kids, but it's still very charming. I'm not sure if it's always open in off-season, but if it is, it opens 1 hour after the park opens.
Indiana Jones
Pirate's Lair
Matterhorn

You have to ride Space Mountain -- it's so much better!
Honestly, I haven't noticed much difference btw the Splash Mountains.

I get so excited when I hear of WDW vets going to DL for the first time! :)

For beaches, I love La Jolla, but that's probably too far south. Just keep in mind the water is ice cold. LOL.

Enjoy!

La Jolla is beautful too. That why it's hard to give advice. Because evey beach is beautiful in their own way. :cloud9:

BTW, I've seen the Grand Canyon from an airplane many a time... it isn't as impressive from the height of a big plane... you may not know what you are looking at unless you have a good pilot that points it out!

I would say the Disney soda shop on Hollywood is not worth a special trip. If you are going there anyway it is a cute place to get food, but not worth the drive on its own.

She wants to see the Hotel del Cornado....along the way we will stop at La Jolla and Laguna

Would it be best to drive very early in the morning to miss rush hour or wait till 10am?

The first time I did the drive from Anaheim to San Diego, I took Pacific Coast Highway all the way dowm because everyone said it was so scenic. The only thing I wasn't aware of was the many stops and stoplights along the way. The scenic way is Pacific Coast highway, the fast way would probably be I-5.
Just so there won't be any surprises like I had.

You have picked beautiful places to stop. I'm sure you will enjoy your day!

We are set to not drive up north yet go south for a day off. Should we drive very early in the morning (Thursday) or wait until like 10am after rush hour?

Matterhorn will be a real treat for you since you have never been...

But The castle looks significantly smaller compared to disneyworld

Especially when you go to disneyworld and then to disneyland after.

But they also have the winnie the pooh ride.....

Which i dont think they have in d-world?

They do have a pooh dark ride in disneyworld.

I've heard that the INDY ride is down. How long

Hmmm People keep saying different things I heard its going to be down later this month

for about a month....

But other people said it wil be down starting in janurary
