Hi there!

I'm in the very early stages of planning a trip to Disneyland for next summer. I was just wondering what it's like. I've been to Disney World many times in the summer and wasn't sure if it'd be similar. I understand that Disneyland is not as busy as WDW due to it's size and location but that doesn't mean it's going to be empty either.

So what are are crowds and weather like for July/August?

Almost all of my 12 trips to WDW have been in the summer and I went last month to DL for the 1st time. The weather in DL was amazing---- made the vacation so much better. No humidity, temps no higher than 82? and no daily afternoon rain showers....

But I found the crowds comparable to WDW- if not actually more people, it seemed crowded due to smaller areas, 2 parks vs 4. But DL opens earlier than WDW overall, and with this and using MM hours make it really enjoyable.

Hydroguy's link pretty much covers it. Use the longer hours to your advantage. Get there early, grab as many FP's as you can, take an afternoon break, and go back in the evening. With hotels within walking distance, it's really easy to do.

To give you an idea on weather it was a high of 80 today and a low of 60, with no humidity. You won't get that in Orlando in August.

My observation in seeing WDW veterans posting here, DLR feels much more crowded. WDW is much more spread out, not just between parks but within the parks. DLR was built smaller for smaller crowds and it can seem pretty bad at times, but if you follow the tips given from the thread posted by HydroGuy, you'll do well.

A couple weeks ago everything seemed crowded. Pretty long lines for everything and quite a few people. Today, much different. One of the differences is that when I went a couple weeks ago, it was on a Saturday and today is, of course, a Sunday. Interestingly, today was a day that was open for Deluxe AP. Crowds and lines were noticably smaller today, but they may still appear larger than what you might be used to.

Too hot and crowded, but still all the same it is doable.

Just got back last week from 1 week at disneyland. Temp never got above 85There was alot of people but it wasn't too bad unless you were waiting in line for star tours. Get your Fast Passes asap and enjoy. FYI next summer Carsland should be open at California Adventure Park.

We were there last week also and KTLA was reporting low 90's and my little weather station was reporting mid 90's on the ground in the park.
Well into 100 plus in the valley and even hotter this week. Hydroguys link is invaluable.

What would pretty long lines be for Disneyland? Same as WDW, 40+ wait? Or like WDW's TSM wait?

We just left DL yesterday after 6 days there - the weather was gorgeous! 70s and low 80s every day - perfect for rides in the morning and pool break in the afternoon. Never rained. The mornings started off cool and overcast; by 10:00 the sun broke out and stayed out until 7:00 or so, when things cool off considerably. It is a bit humid in the mornings and evenings but nothing like FL! We've been once in June and three times in August - the weather definitely varies - we've had 70s and 90s. But it always cools off in the evening.

Crowds are not bad if you know how to avoid them! Up until 10:00 (11:00 at DCA) most lines are under 20 minutes. To ride Star Tours, TSMM, or Space Mountain without long lines, get there early or get a FP (no FP for TSMM, though). In the middle of the day the wait times for those attractions, as well as Splash Mountain and maybe Nemo (I am sure I am forgetting something) can be well over an hour. (Esp. ST - that can be 2 hours.) Get the big rides in early, then visit the attractions or the rides with shorter lines late morning, take a break midday and come back in the evening to use your FPs, and you will be fine! The big difference to me between crowded DL and crowded MK is that DL is smaller - it has narrower walkways and feels more crowded just walking around. You can literally come to a standstill trying to get out of Tomorrowland at times. We try to avoid the most crowded times of the day at DL. DCA (when not under construction with half the park closed like it is now) is fantastic - nice wide walkways, open spaces - just feels less crowded.

If you have an iPhone, download some of the wait time apps (just search for Disneyland wait times) and you can get an idea of what the wait times are like for different rides and at different times of the day.

P.S. Hot in Anaheim is nothing like hot in Orlando - the humidity makes it so much worse in Orlando, IMO. The sun is a little more brutal in CA but the it is almost always pleasant in the shade no matter how hot it gets.

I visit DL last summer and this past week. I noticed a significant difference in the crowd levels between the two summers. This year things were much more hectic and busy. I have heard other people on the boards here say that as well.

With this being said, things were very manageable and I do not think it was as bad as WDW gets during the summer months. Utilize fast pass effectively and recognize that there are only two parks to focus on instead of WDW's four. Whatever you do, be sure to enjoy DL if you decide to visit during the summer. It's a special place and deserves a few "smell the roses" moments!

I am eating my heart out at the weather you had. We were there a few days before you & had temps of 89 all 3 days, with humidity. The parks were very crowded IMO, however I still believe it was so much easier to accomplish so much more, even w/ little planning & parkhopping on a whim, than you can ever dream of at WDW.

Experienced WDW as a young child the 2nd year they were open & it has always had a piece of my heart. Visited DLR the first time just over 20 years ago & still adored WDW much more. Told DH the next Disney visit I think I want to go back to DLR, not WDW & not even my happy place the Poly.

One thing I do feel about DLR & crowds is the evenings get a little tense in both parks. WOC was amazing show & I would have gladly watched every night. The process of fastpass, line up in a herd to go to use your pass for your viewing area & then standing and waiting, particularly in the heat & humidity is grueling. Asked several CM's in DL, including Fantasmic people, about where & how to watch the show. Got great info, but people even 40 min. ahead of show were kind of herded along aggressively w/ little information about how to find a spot to watch. Because the park is so wonderfully landscaped, there are many trees obscuring castle view for the fireworks. Asked a Main Street CM directly, what are the rules for where you can watch? Basically the rules are the street, no walkways.

They are very rope-happy about setting up walking areas, which they've got to do for safety. It's annoying when you've followed the rules & then CM's direct latecomers, even during the show, under the ropes where you're standing, pushing you forward into the people who are less than an arm's length in front of you, who have less than an arm's length of room in front of them, etc., etc. People got very irritated w/ us because CM's were directing them into our space & we weren't moving because we had approximately five inches max we could move our feet forward. After fireworks walking in Tomorrowland is pandemonium, with CM's giving different directions of which way to walk through the area, even the same CM giving different directions to people walking through! I understand dealing w/ so many people is never going to be 100-percent smooth, but I'm sure there are some tweaks here & there which will help guests enjoy the experience much better.

We have been to WDW many times before. Once in Aug and decided never again. Just got back from our 1st DL trip and I will take DL in July or Aug over WDW every time. The weather was perfect. No rain problems at all. It was warm, but it was more humid and warm at home in MI.

Crowds were doable, you just had to manage your time well. It did not feel crowed really. The only time it felt really cramp is when you were waiting for a night time show.

We were there July 31 -Aug 2. We got so much done with Magic Morning at 7am and regular opening at 8am before the crowds got there.

Temps were not bad, in the 80s but the difference btw FL and CA is that many of the lines have no shade in CA, so you do get hotter.

Make sure you look closely at wait times, bc it is smaller, many times it "looked" super crowded at a ride entrance when it was only 20 minutes. BTMRR was like this, it looked packed by wait time was 20 min, we got through in 21!

Also Peter Pan does not have a FP, so ride that early.

We go every july to DL. It seems like every year the weather is different. Sometimes its cool with no humidity, sometimes it gets up to almost 100, and this year when we went there was a lot of humidity, but the temps were only around 79-80. But it always cools down at night, I LOVE the weather at night :)

The crowds were def. bigger this year compared to last year! Last year I don't think we ever waited longer than 30 minutes for any ride, and with FP we would be on within 10 min.

This year, some of the stand-by times were over 120 minutes (Splash, GRR,Space Mtn, Star Tours) , and the fast pass lines were around a 60 minute wait.
