Disneyland in Early June?

We are looking at taking a trip to either Disneyland (and San Diego) or Disney World at the beginning of June. We just returned from our first trip to Disney World and have decided we need to take another vacation to one of the locations. We have never been on a family vacation to Disneyland (I was there when younger but don't remember it) or anywhere out west. A few questions I have are:

- How is the weather and crowds at Disneyland in early June? Does California have school year round?
- Does Disneyland offer many discounts (free dining, room discounts, etc.) like WDW over the summer?
- Is it a must to stay at one of the 3 Disneyland hotels to get the most of the experience?
- Is traffic pretty chaotic from Disneyland to Universal, Sea World, etc.? Orlando traffic was pretty mellow.
- Any recommendations for a nice resort to stay at for a few days in the San Diego area? Beach front would be nice.
- Is 3 days enough to see all of Disneyland?

Thanks in advance.

Early June is generally not horrible crowd-wise. We have gone mid-May the past 2 years and found the crowds to be moderate, except on grad nights - which get very crowded with rowdy teenagers as the evening wears on. For this reason, I am hesitant to recommend Mid-May or June.

California schools have some year-round and some traditional schools; I believe there are more traditional schedules than year-round, many of which may not get out until mid-June (don't be surprised to see end-of-year field trips). In neighboring Arizona, many of our schools get out mid-May (we start the beginning of August), so you may have a lot of visitors from my state.

I have never stayed onsite at Disneyland, so my answer would be that it's not necessary.

Weather should be fairly nice, a little "June gloom", but warm enough...

Three days will not be enough to do everything, but you should be able to get a lot done in that time. I would recommend four if you can swing it.

We were there this year during the first week of June and had an amazing time. The weather was beautiful and we didn't find the crowds to be outrageous even though 2 of our days were grad days. We didn't stay onsite, but opted instead for the Hojo. I would have loved to stay at one of the Disney hotels, but the price difference was too much for me to justify. We had three park days and I felt like we did get to do everything we wanted to but one more day would have been nice. I will add that this was the week before Carsland opened so that may have played into the crowd level being so nice and now that it is open, that fourth day may be necessary. All in all, it was a wonderful vacation and we cannot wait to return.

So apparently they've changed the format and the exclusive parties will only be at California Adventure. I remember when the park closed down around 6 or 7 PM and we kids had the place all to ourselves from 9 PM until the morning. Nothing quite like riding Star Tours until absolutely dazed due to lack of sleep.

Apparently they throw in a park hopper ticket that can be used early in the day (thus Grad Night kids mixing in with the regular crowd) but the exclusive party happens later that night.

I remember the entertainment my year - early June 1988. Expose, Michael Bolton (ewww), and Roger. It think they had several different nights that year with different lineups. We came in from Northern California and did a grand tour of SoCal amusement parks, including a few hours at Knott's Berry Farm after checking into our hotel. Within 24 hours, we had done KBF, Disneyland, and Magic Mountain on the way home.

Weather is to die for. June has gloom in the mornings and then the sun breaks through by noon or so. Sometimes it gets chilly in the evenings and it might require jeans and hoodie. We love that! School lets out in mid/late June.

Not since Carsland
- Is it a must to stay at one of the 3 Disneyland hotels to get the most of the experience?
No, but it really helps and especially if its your first and only time or will be for a long time
- Is traffic pretty chaotic from Disneyland to Universal, Sea World, etc.? Orlando traffic was pretty mellow.
Pretty chaotic for sure. One time to Hollywood it took us 2 hours. Most of the time to San Diego it usually flows pretty good.

Hotel Del Coronado but its very very expensive. Think of Grand Floridian before it was ever a dream. Its right on the beach and its so worth it.

Maybe if you go commado. I recommend 4-5 days to fully enjoy it. The more the better.

Thanks everyone.

KCmike - The Hotel Del Coronado does look nice. Is it kid friendly? We have an 8 & 2 year old. Have you stayed at any other San Diego area beach front resorts?

Very kid friendly. No I haven't stayed anywhere else in San Diego. In early june they run b2g1 deals among other deals. We absolutely love it there. The beach is so wide open, the amenities, and property are first class. You can take a look at my trip report for other pictures if you would like. See below.

Thanks KCmike. Coronado is looking out of the budget as I am going to try and take my two nieces with us.

I am now looking at the last week in May. It looks like the big school district in LA gets out on May 31st this year so I want to avoid the rush the week after. I can also avoid a few days of Grad Days during that last week in May.

Anyone know of any nice timeshare units that can be rented (broker or EBay) around San Diego (prefer close to the beach with nice pools)? Would be nice to have a kitchen, extra bathrooms, laundry, etc with the additional people.

Have you looked on vrbo.com? I've rented a 3 bedroom house in San Diego for our next trip in June 2013 for a very reasonable price. I've used vrbo for several trips to different locations and have always been pleased. I hope this helps! Good luck!

Good idea. I will check the site.

Anyone know of any hotels with walking distance of Disneyland that have two bedroom suites with two bathrooms? I can book at the Hyatt Regency OC for a great rate but it looks like it is best to ride the bus if staying there.

That looks like the way to go. After checking VRBO I can rent a house for a week for about the same as hotel rooms. Do you drive to Disney from San Diego? That would be the only drawback is having to drive to Disneyland for 3 or 4 days in a row. Maybe I will check to see if there are any nice places between Anaheim and San Diego to rent.

No, we won't drive back and forth. I don't think that would be fun at all. San Diego will be a separate part of the trip. When I go to Disney I like to stay right there because we like to go from open to close! This time we will be staying at the Ramada Maingate at the Park. I have heard good things about it and I got a reasonable rate and it's very close to the park entrance.
