We are planning our first trip to Disneyland, and I am looking for some pros/cons of the three Disneyland hotels.

We have been to WDW many times and are very familiar with the resorts there, but we do not know much about the Disneyland hotels so we would appreciate any input and suggestions anyone has.

The Disneyland Hotel and Paradise Pier Hotel are older hotel towers that were built and run by other companies until Disney bought them and themed them somewhat.
The Grand Californian was built by Disney and is similar to (sam architect) the Wilderness Lodge and the Animal Kingdom Lodge. It is an awesome place virtually located on the side of the DCA theme park. But the rooms are a bit small, much like the WL and AKL. The Disneyland hotel has 3 towers with many differentt layouts for the rooms. They are in general quite a bit larger than the Grand Californian. If you book this hotel ask for a room with two queens and a day bed. Some of the king rooms are a bit small. They are just starting a major remodel of this hotel so some rooms have the new upgraded decor but the removed the sliders so you can not open up the door to the outside.
Paradise Pier is a sort of a nice but bland hotel with decent sized rooms and some incredible views of DCA on one side. The elevator here is REALLY slow.
I really like the Grand California as the lobby is awesome and the room decore is not to flowery and the location is better than anything at any U.S.A. Disney park but I like the Disneyland Hotel a bit better because the rooms are bigger.

I have stayed at Disneyland Hotel and Grand Californian. While the Grand Californian has a stunning lobby and a somewhat more convenient location, I prefer the Disneyland hotel because it has much more of a 'Disney' feel IMO.

DLH rooms have tv cabinets with a map of Disneyland on them and I love the Tinkerbell wallpaper border that glows at night. There are some great pictures in the lobby/check-in area too.

One of our DIS-ers, Bumbershoot (Molly), would be an excellent person to speak on this subject because she has stayed at all 3 DLR hotels in the last year - actually, I think in the last 6 months, maybe?? - so she can give a sort of fresh, current rundown of the pros and cons of each one.

I have stayed at all 3 hotels more than once but my last stay at the PPH was in December 2008, my last stay at the GCH was in December 2007 and my last stay at the DLH was about 15 years ago!!! However, I always end up on the GCH and DLH property even if I stay at the PPH, so I can get a taste of all 3 places in each trip.

The PPH, unfortunately, suffers from lack of space upon which to build or expand, so while they have a very cute sun/surf/nautical theme going on, they can't really develop that theme to the fullest extent. PPH is basically one lone building and a parking structure. You see traces of this beachy/ocean theme in many places - the sun is prominent in several areas, there are Mickey Lifeguard lamps in the rooms, surfboard room number signs, seashell soap dishes in the bathroom, and sort of pastel blues, greens and pinks in the rooms and hallway carpets. There is a pull-out bed/daybed in all of the rooms, and they are fairly spacious. Also, in the bathrooms are the festive 'Mickey Ears' bath products, sitting atop a surfboard. The lobby seems shiny and upbeat - a little more 'fresh,' in my opinion than the DLH, and features a Surfer Goofy statue to greet guests as they walk in. Yes, the wait for elevators can be a bit bothersome and long, but it has never been enough to keep me from staying there. The best part of the PPH is the fact that it is the least expensive of the 3 hotels, so it is a cheaper way to get a taste of Disney magic and the perks of being a hotel guest. The PPH is located across the street from the GCH and DTD and the main hub of activity.

GCH, as previously mentioned, has a gorgeous, huge lobby area with a fireplace and a piano player and comfy, warm, welcoming chairs and sofas for weary travelers to plunk down in (even if you are not staying at the GCH). To me, the GCH is very reminiscent of a sort of elegantly rustic mountain chalet in decor and vibe, with rich dark wood and dim lighting and very high ceilings. You will not see much in the way of Mickey in the GCH (however, there is a cool hidden Mickey in the grandfather clock in the lobby). The rooms seem very dark to me, in contrast to the much brighter rooms of the PPH, and they seemed small to me. There are no Mickey Ears bath products in the bathrooms - instead, you will find H20 Spa products. There is a nice pool area, which is prettier than the pool at PPH but doesn't have the nifty water slide that PPH has. As for convenience, yes, depending on which room you get, the location can be excellent and save tons of time going to and from the parks. When I was last there in 2007, we had a great location and so being that close to the parks was irresistible! However, not all rooms have that great location. If you get into a room with a DTD/fireworks view, you will most likely be traveling down endless corridors to get to that room, therefore negating the convenient proximity of the GCH to the parks.

Again, I have not stayed at the DLH in 15 or so years, so I cannot really speak to the condition or style of the rooms these days, but the DLH grounds are sprawling and lush in many places, and there are lots of character touches around the property. There are hidden Mickeys and other hidden characters in the hallway carpets. There are character topiary bushes. There is a lovely koi pond and gorgeous waterfalls. There are fun mini-remote controlled Jungle Cruise boats to play with. There are bronze character statuettes in the main lobby, and a giant Mickey statue outside of the main entrance to the hotel. There is a fun themed pool area. Plus, there are 3 towers, so the numbers of rooms far exceeds the rooms in the PPH. Also, you will find the Mickey Ears bath products in the DLH rooms.

I have also stayed at all 3, but only GC in recent years.

A couple more things of note...
DLH has probably the most exciting pool for the kids. It is pirate themed and very creative, so if pool time is a consideration, you may prefer DLH

The GC has a private entrance into DCA which we absolutely loved! We always do multi-day passes, so the kids are in no hurry to get up and in parks, so we usually got up in time for DCA, did rides/shows there, then headed to DL next. The PPH had a private entrance when we stayed there, but I heard they closed that entrance when they built the new DCV units onto GC... not sure if that is still accurate

Truth is we liked all 3 for different reasons
DLH = True Disney feel. Fun, lively, creative. Best pool
PPH = Nice pool. Had priv entrance. less expensive (just felt like a hotel... not really disney magic)
GCH = Very elegant. Best restaurant (Napa). Very close to DL and priv entrance to DCA (very similar feel to VWL at WDW)

An important point is that many of the off-site hotels are literally across the street from DLR, and are as close to the main entrance as DLH and PPH. Be sure to read Hydroguy's opus on DLR for WDW vets - http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1162599 - particularly sections 11 and 20.

For WDW vets who stay onsite it is easy to understand their preference towards choosing a DLR hotel. Nothing wrong with that. Just understand that DLR hotels do not offer the same advantages as WDW hotels. It is not unusual to find folks who stay only onsite at WDW but who stay offsite at DLR.

Thank you for all of the information. Hydroguy's information was very helpful.

I should have been more clear that we are considering the DLR hotels because we are looking to use some of our DVC points. We were planning to stay at GCH, but the availability is limited for our travel dates so I am considering DLH or PPH. I was curious to learn more about how the DLR hotels compare so I could decide where we should stay.

If anyone has additional input or suggestions, I would love to read more.

The use of your DVC points at the Disneyland hotels has changed since the Villas opened. I think there is info about that on the DVC thread. Since you have DVC points, why don't you stay at the Villas?

I was planning to stay at the GCH Villas; but when I called a few days ago, there were not studio rooms available for the dates we need to travel. They actually suggested the other two hotels (DLH & PPH) to me as options, so that is why I started looking for information about these hotels.

Based upon all of the good information I have received, we are going to try and stay at the DLH unless something opens up at GCH.
