We are planning for Disneyland next summer so just researching. Am thinking I want to stay at Disneyland hotel but was told there are no balconies. Is that true?? With three little girls under 8 at trip time what hotel would everyone recommend??

I like the Grand. The balconies are great. Kids love hanging out on them, as do I.

We stayed at DLH and it was awesome! I didn't know they used to have balconies until we were back home. Our 3 kids are 7 and under and they loved it too.

We prefer GCH. I thought our boys wouldn't like it as much because it is not disney themed, but I was so wrong! We got the bunk bed rooms and our boys loved them! Pool area is awesome, not as hectic as DLH. Plus you can't beat the location. The walk back to DLH in the heat can be torture with little ones!

There are a few suites that have balconies (with no real view) in Frontier Tower.

Apart from that, they didn't *really* have balconies before. The balconies were about a foot deep, and with a little kid it just terrified me. We were just up soooo high.

DLH is lovely with little kids. I'm not a goopy type of a person, not really, but DS's reactions to the lightup, "dream is a wish", headboards nearly made me weep. With 3 girls? Best to stay at DLH.

I've stayed at DLH several times going back to the mid-1980's. They never had balconies in all that time.

Our two girls have loved staying at all three on site properties, one loves the PPH, the other the DLH (for the headboards), Mrs McN and I both love GCH!

The DLH is really cool, but the biggest problem is you have to walk past GCH to get to and from the parks. It was this walk on our first trip that made us go for the GCH on our second visit (split stay with PPH).

You really can't go wrong with any of them, I'm not sure where we will stay this year as the exchange rate means all three are around 20% more than last year. Heart says GCH again and not worry about the cost but the wallet is saying PPH! We may end up back at DLH as a compromise but the location of GCH is simply awesome (we were 120 steps from room to DCA).

The headboards and large windows totally make up for the lack of balconies, in my opinion. The balconies from the suites in the Fronteir tower have great views of the fireworks.

We have stayed at all 3 and have 2 girls 8 and under. We love the Premium View rooms at Paradise Pier. You look right into DCA and the view is amazing and exciting!!! Rooms are also on the large side and I always appreciate the extra space. Rooms are decorated with bright beach colors and have a fun vibe. The lobby area is very underwhelming and there isn't really a place to hang out in the lobby. We've never used the pool here but I've heard it isn't as nice as at DH or GCH. Elevators are slow and can be a pain. The character breakfast here had good food and my girls had a lot of fun dancing with the characters.

The Disneyland Hotel is probably our favorite out of the 3 hotels. The grounds are beautiful. Very tropical, you definitely get that vacation feel. The room we had was quite large (although our friends had a much smaller one). The light-up headboard is really special and our girls love this. The pools here are definitely our girls favorite. They love the waterslides! I was by myself with both my girls a couple of years ago and found the monorail an easy and quick way to get to Disneyland and back.

We had a very underwhelming experience at GCH. One thing after another went wrong. It started with the pool having maintenance and enjoying the sound of a jack hammer every time we came into or left our hotel room. Also, the first night, the fire alarm went off in the middle of the night and we had to evacuate to Downtown Disney for about an hour. With 2 tired and very cold kids this wasn't the way to start our trip! Several other things went wrong over the course of our 4 day stay but it ended with the hotel doing remodeling work in the room RIGHT next to ours. For 3 hours before we left there were very LOUD construction noises in our room. When the bellman came up to get our bags he was in shock and couldn't believe how loud it was and that it had been going on for hours. After really splurging on the GCH it was A total disappointment. The location, of course, is great. We also had a great room in the location we wanted with a view into GCH and a balcony. Rooms are small though (we really like a big room!). In the end though, our stay was not worth the price we paid. Not even close. I feel our experience is probably not the typical or average experience. I'm guessing the average stay is quite nice.

I like to stay on-site for the pools (if I'm going when we can use them) or if we are going during a busy time of year (to take advantage of EMH). If it is a slow time at Disneyland we usually stay off of Harbour somewhere within walking distance (we like the Fairfield Inn).

If you aren't set on staying at a Disney Hotel, check out the new Courtyard Downtown Anaheim. It will be opening up this summer and will have a great pool area with waterslides and very walkable!

We are WDW vets who will soon be going to DLR for the first time as a family.

We recently booked the DLH for our upcoming stay in May. To me, the deciding factors were: (1) the pool area and tropical look to the grounds; (2) classic Disney feel; and (3) larger rooms. We considered GCH but, to us, it looked a lot like the Wilderness Lodge at WDW, which is a resort that we love, but we wanted something different.

We don't anticipate the extra walking distance versus GCH to be a big deal because DLH will still seems very close to the parks relative to WDW distances. The lack of balconies is also not a big deal to us as we rarely use them when we stay deluxe at WDW.

Would u feel the same about the grand had there not been any of the construction problems or the fire alarm?

I echo what Whistlebee says! Minus the bad experience with construction etc at the GCH; we've never had to deal with that but still prefer the DLH. It's our favorite because it is the most "disneyfied" and we prefer the pools there. If you plan to spend time at the hotel and pools and not just in the parks, I recommend it the most. Though all three are great options. Yes GCH wins in terms of easiest access, but DLH isn't far behind when you use the monorail. My biggest issue with GCH is that the rooms need an upgrade now. But the lobby is still awesome and my girls (9 and 7) love the bunk beds. It is an experience worth having, but I would choose it during Christmas time and DLH during the summer months. Paradise Pier is a good option because it's less expensive. The pool there is significantly smaller, but the water slide is fun especially for older kids (6+). It's still my third choice though. I don't like having to cross the street and enter through the GCH really. But there are worse things! ;)

FYI we're passholders but live 3.5 hours away so stay in hotels when we go which is several times a year, most years. We've stayed at all three hotels several times in the last few years.

As for your balcony question, I personally don't think the individual balconies at the GCH are worth choosing it over another hotel. They're not big enough to do more than sit/stand and watch the pool below. Nice to get fresh air, but not a deal breaker IMO. I will add that the GCH has great larger balconies that guests can go on to view World of Color. That was nice to take hot cocoa out to and watch. Though the balcony viewing doesn't replace being up close - you want to do that at least once.

@chrisaman, even if our stay had been better the Disneyland Hotel is still our favorite. I like GCH for the location and the relaxing pool atmosphere (my kids like the pool at DH by far) but DH wins for our family. We are staying at Paradise Pier for our next trip tho. Sometimes it just comes down to price!

I really loved the DLH. Recently returned from a stay with my husband and 3 1/2 year old, who thought the room was magical. I really liked the theming of the hotel, and after doing some research thought it was the best option for my family. The pool is really great, Goofy's Kitchen was a really fun on-site character breakfast, and the whole hotel just feels so Disney. My son's favorite part by far though was the headboard in our room- so fun! It is the furthest Disney hotel from the parks, but it wasn't an issue for us to walk at all... maybe 10 minutes each way.

Thanks everyone! I am leaning towards DLH as it looks more disney to me and looks in comparisons to the contemporary which we love at DW! Is the walk far to the parks or even worth worrying about??
thanks!

It wasn't a concern for us at all. We took the monorail from downtown disney to Tomorrowland twice and that was super quick/convenient. About a 10-12 minute walk for my family from the hotel to either park. It was just my husband and I with my son in a stroller though, so if you have young kids that will be walking, it may take you slightly longer.
