I took this tour yesterday and thought it was fabulous. I love the hotel and have seen it change over the decades. It was a very nostalgic tour. I believe the tour is only for hotel guests (can be staying at any of the 3 hotels). You are supposed to sign up ahead of time, but I just went to the meeting spot in hopes of joining because I noticed the tour on the schedule 15 minutes before it started.
They didn't check names or anything. We had 2 guides and they were both amazing. I can't spell the word Mary Poppins says (supercalifragilisticexpialidocious) but that's what they were. It's a great tour for history buffs, nostalgia and Disney super fans. If you don't fall into at least one of those categories, you might not enjoy the tour as much as I did. We visited the 3 main towers, the E ticket lounge and the Blue Sky Suite. I had never heard of the Blue Sky Suite. They said they hardly ever take anyone inside as it's often in use.
We were encouraged to take lots of pictures. I didn't take any except for the Blue Sky Suite. It's a very large room at the top of the Fantasy tower and is not available for booking. It's used for very special circumstances and big meetings (sounds like only in-house stuff, not the public). It has a beautiful sunroom, 2 bathrooms, a kitchen and a couple big meeting rooms and just one Murphy bed.

It was very cool, but for me the best part of the tour was the history and learning some things that I didn't know. For example, at one point the towers were names Magic, Wonder and Dream. When they changed the names, the cruise ships got those names. I never associated the Disneyland Hotel with the cruise ships.
