I was reading MiceAge Al Lutz's update, the last paragrahic he said DL is planning to build a fourth tower by the end of the Disneyland Hotel refurb project that will add hundreds of new rooms and ..........DVC suites!! :cool1:

I'd take a wait and see attitude at this point, given the current economy in California and the slower than anticipated sales for the Villas at the Grand Californian.

With anything Disney Vacation Club does, it is best to wait to hear an official announcement from Disney before getting too excited. Although it is a great rumor. :woohoo:

I really wouldn't be surprised. I bet the DVC sales center in Ca. has sold more WDW than GCV. Now those folks who are in Ca. but bought WDW might want to use their points at DL, but with so few GCV that might not be easy.

A DLH DVC would give Ca. folks one more reason to buy DVC - even if their home resort is in WDW.

The big question for me is, would it be a whole new DVC property, or a new phase of VGC? It it were the latter, I can see a new nightmare with location requests, etc.....

I read through that update this morning and just kind of breezed right by it... Al Lutz has been good with many "rumors" in the past... but at this point I'd say it's really too early to tell. The DL Hotel redo has only just begun and is slated to take 3 years just to get through the original towers... let alone building a brand new one, plus all of the other renovations the article talked about. It certainly makes some sense given the small amount of DVC rooms included in the VGC project... but with VGC sales reported to be not as brisk as everyone originally anticipated - I wouldn't hold my breath too much just yet.

Personally I think they're going to take a longer wait and see approach to how well the overall additions at DCA fare once World of Color & the rest open given the already very high room count around the DL resort between Disney/non-Disney hotels. While the parks have been reaching near capacity lately what with the successful Halloweentime stuff, etc & are expected to continue that way through Christmas/New Year, one of the questions the suits have to be able to really quantify is whether they are selling out the on-property rooms sufficiently to warrant more capacity? Planning for growth is a good strategy many times, but if they then have too much and have to discount heavily to fill those rooms later, that only defeats the purpose.

It would be a nice alternative for those of us who may have times when we don't want to drop so many points into our stay (I'd assume that it would be less points per night than VGC, as it is a less ideal location), but I won't get excited until I hear an announcement directly from Disney.

I am cautiously optimistic that this rumor is true or at least being seriously considered based on my own research.

I did hear from our room service waiter that more may be coming. But I'll wait till Blue Sky Disney says it's true.

The Disneyland Hotel would not necessarily be a less ideal location. The pool is better for kids, access to DL through the monorail is better, presumably there would be a concierge level w/ DL fireworks viewing @ the concierge lounge and if the points were lower for the same size rooms on the same days, I would probably pick a Disneyland Hotel DVC over VGC because I'm just that "thrifty"......I love the Grand Californian, but somehow the Disneyland Hotel just feels more Disney-ish to me. So, we'd be very happy w/ villas at the Disneyland Hotel, not holding our breath, we just think it would be a good idea. Of course, we think a decent (like $50 or $75, maybe even $100) discount on premium APs would be a good idea too!

Just think of the room on the roof to watch the fireworks, and World Of Color!
Actually the rumor going around a few years ago, was the Bonita Tower, or whatever it is called now, was the site of a future DVC. We love that tower, with the waterfalls, and koi ponds outside the entry.

I agree with you about it having a "Disney" feel. Part of that is the more obvious Disney theming which some people don't really care for and I get that too but it would be nice to be able to have both as DVC options. I LOVE the DL pool though and really hope they don't change that, as the article suggests. I won't hold my breath on this one but I we would definitely add on here if this ever happened. I have a lot of great memories from our stays at the DL hotel.

I hope it happens as also. Even though I've only stayed at the DLH one time and PPH two times. I just love the Grand but it would be nice for those occasions I'm a little short on points but still want to go.

I have stayed at DL on property 3 times in the last 15 months. I just want to add that I love the DL hotel DVC idea. I stayed at all the Disney hotels, and I like all 3 properties, and let me say that Paradise Pier has fantastic views of the California Adventure park... (I stayed there before all the current construction)

But to the poster who said something about the monorail from the DL hotel, it is something you really can't count on. When it is hot, they do not run the monorail for example, and they close it from time to time during the evening, maybe during the fireworks, I am not sure. And the monorail dumps you into Tomorrowland, and sometimes you just want to come in the front and see the castle via Main st. So count on walking thru Downtown Disney, which to me is a nice walk, lots to look at, etc.

I like Paradise Pier alot, but the pool there is pretty blah, when you think of the pools at the moderates at WDW....... needs a major refurb IMHO. (it is ok, just a concrete rectangle, on a roof, you get the idea)

1. I think when previous posters referred to the DLH as being a less desirable location they were referring to the location literally. . .as in you are farther a way from the park as opposed to the VGC which is in a park. Plus if the DVC is in the alleged fourth tower it would have to be even farther I would think. . I could not see where else to put it. Of course that's all relative to WDW.

2. I would think (and hope) the points would be less since the VGC are in a four diamond hotel and the DLH (although my favorite) does not have that level of rating.

3. I read somewhere that the number of DVC rooms they decided to build was based on a calculation of doubling the number of current DVCers using points at the GC hotel. Of course I have no idea how true that is, but that would make sense.

4. We are currently a single income family by choice so we can be home to raise our kids. I would love GCV points, but its not to be right now. When we go back to two full time incomes I hope they are selling VDH points (or would it be DHVs or VDLH) I would most certainly be interested because I too love the overt Disneyness of the DLH.

If they build, clearly the motivation would be to make money. But why would making it easy for existing owners to use their points factor into the thinking? There's no financial advantage to that. From what I understand, GCV hasn't been selling all that well.

The DL Hotel is, of course, the original "Disney" hotel...but certainly not the first one that the Disney Company built. At the DL Resort, the Grand Californian is the first Disney built hotel. Disney didn't actually own the DL hotel until they bought it in 1988 (I was working at DL when they finally bought it) - and they didn't aquire the Paradise Pier Hotel until around '99 or 2000. The DLH has the history, sure, since Walt allowed his buddy Jack Wrather to build it, but it really only feels Disney-ish because they redid it after buying it, and again when the DCA/DTD expansion came along. Before that it was just a boring box hotel with blase decor.

I love it for what it is - and the history that it has, but honestly that's about it. I've enjoyed staying in it, but it is true, the rooms are old and tired. The hallways are dark, and the A/C & water pressure are not the best. It needs serious updating, which is of course what they're doing to it.

In re-reading Al's article, the nice "new" pool that's more kid-friendly than the GCH's is only about 8 years old...but it's apparently going to go bye-bye too. Along with all of the myriad mish-mosh of shops & surrounding structures. And of course the old Dancing Waters area in the back corner will go. Who's to say the Koi Ponds and waterfalls will stay? They'll probably be ripped out too. All of those changes, along with the gutting & rebuilding of the towers will remove the actual history. It will be a completely new place by then, and yes, will still feel "Disney-ish", but the original charm of it all will be gone. Personally I miss the days of riding the monorail TO the Hotel vs. DTD. The station didn't move in the expansion, but a lot of the original hotel grounds were torn up to build that darn AMC/Rainforest Cafe/ESPN Zone area and the bridge across the street. I miss all of the outlying cottages and the "Travelport" from the '60's.

As far as fireworks viewing goes, if they put DVC units into the new 4th tower that's supposed to be part of it, it'll be further away from DL proper than the existing towers are. Unless it's taller than the existing towers, the viewing won't be all that fantastic... there'll be better viewing of WOC than the DL fireworks more likely. Especially when you consider the 55 years of growth of those beautiful trees throughout DL proper that are purposely there blocking sight lines.

Also, who's to say the points will be cheaper? Sure they probably will be since the DLH doesn't have the private entrance niche of the Grand Cal, and as BeccaG said, the DLH doesn't have the same 4 diamond rating that the Grand Cal does... but they could throw their marketing machine towards the "original Disney hotel" thought and try to have some ridiculous premium points strategy - which wouldn't work the same way BLT did, definitely.

Oh, and then there's the current lack of the booking fee...sad to say, but my bet is that if they do build more DVC units at the DLR, regardless of which hotel they get attached to - that $95 fee will be turned on in a heartbeat just to be able to stay at the PPH. I don't relish that thought at all, but won't be surprised by it at all.
