Disneyland Halts All New Magic Key Sales w/ Renewal Info to Come; Plus New CA Resident Ticket Offer

A question for those that are down on Disney. I only ask my family doesn't have the emotional attachment to Disney like many of you do. If you're so upset about the state of Disney why not go to Knotts instead. I have heard but great things Knotts.
Knotts is NOT Disney. It just isn’t. Completely different thing.

Don't most passes have no black out dates on weekdays. I wouldn't be surprised that's why weekdays are busier. I don't think they want to go back to max capacity again. IMO they are trying to find that sweet spot for high profit and high guest satisfaction. Before the reservation system there were lots of complaints about the amount of pass holders in the parks. They are trying to even it out. I am going to post a Chapek quote and it tells you why the don't want many AP holders in the parks like in the past.

AS YOU KNOW, DIFFERENT GUESTS, DEPENDING ON WHERE THEY ARE COMING FROM, HAVE DIFFERENT RELATIVE VALUES IN TERMS OF THEIR CONTRIBUTION AS A GUEST TO THE PARK. TYPICALLY SOMEONE WHO TRAVELS AND STAYS FOR 5-7 DAYS IS MARGINALLY MORE VALUABLE TO THE BUSINESS THAN SOMEONE WHO COMES IN ON AN ANNUAL PASS AND STAYS A DAY OR TWO AND CONSUMES LESS MERCHANDISE AND FOOD AND BEVERAGE.”

See now I don’t believe this is true. As someone mentioned, many AP’s will buy anything shiny and new Disney puts in front of them. They want to try every new food, but all the popcorn buckets and sippers and ears. A family of 4 coming for 4 days can’t afford to go bananas buying everything because they spend a million dollars on tickets. I see way more ticket holders coming in with their Subway or packed lunches than I ever have AP’s

It goes sorta different ways. An AP holder may choose to limit their spending at the parks. Sorta like going out to eat becomes expensive so people cut back or treat it like a splurge. If you're a local and an AP holder you may find yourself going to the parks often enough but you may not be eating in the parks for your meals (especially your entire day's meals) like someone coming in for that being their actual vacation.

And a family of 4 coming for 4 days may choose to splurge like none other because it's their only (or one of the few) trips they'll ever make.

Largely Disney over the years would prefer the person who goes all out, in reality while local AP holders can and do often buy merch (I know my DISer friends certainly do) they also tend to make different choices than those actually on vacation. You may not see them with packed lunches but that may also be because they go to the parks for a while and go back home to eat, they may go to Oga's once in a while catch some rides and then head on home, they may make the journey for that popcorn bucket and then do nothing else leaving after they've gotten it. And let's not forget that merch bought does not always mean merch isn't being resold.

If Disney is looking at revenue per day, APs will be lower. But if they're looking at revenue per year, APs will be higher.

If an AP goes into the park 30 times over the course of the year and eats only 20 times, that's still more than a vacationer that's in the park for 5 days and eats every single lunch and dinner in the parks.

If an average vacationer spends 3 days in the parks and stays off site, they've probably spent less at Disney than the price of an Enchant Key.

An AP will also use up a lot more park day slots than a non-AP, which is a serious consideration from Disney right now as days are filling to the max they allow in every day.

I think, even though this is a DL thread, that the discussion on AP spending habits applies to both parks. And the PP (the one who spoke about what kind of AP Chapek wants) was speaking as a generality towards AP holders and how the Disney company wants the right kind of AP holder not merely just AP holders. This does tend to be more evident at WDW than DLR because DLR is more of a locals park but still applies on a general level.

A lot of your points relies on some made up number used for illustration purposes (which isn't intended to be offensive just matter of factly stated).

I don't have AP friends over at DLR so I cannot speak directly to that part however I do have AP friends for WDW and while they do go into the parks buy merch and eat they don't really drop $100 meals, one couple almost never stays on site any longer (although they have done that over at Universal) and the other does stay on site from time to time but also a lot of the time uses his father's DVC points (for both WDW and Aulani) the rare times he stays on site these days. They do frequent the parks but they don't on average spend quite as much because there's not a need any longer. We had the interesting conversation last month about just how much their habits had changed, how they switched from vacation mode to local mode. Sure they go to get the Figment popcorn bucket but then they leave, yeah they'll go for the afternoon after work to kill time but then they aren't spending as much cumulatively in comparison to what you may often more find on the park visitor who is doing a "yeah don't think we're going back here" kind of trip. Also not to mention their discount they use offsets some of the spending.

I mean I don't disagree with you on some points but it's more about a particular AP individual not AP's in general, that's why the poster had said that quote from Chapek.
