It is technical. You have to be far enough back for the Kinect to be able to see your whole body. If someone is too close it cannot track the hand or foot movements. That all being said, a company is coming out with an attachment to help reduce the room requirement by up to 40%. It was announced at the E3 Expo and should be coming later this year. PC magazine has a little bit about it.

One of the biggest complaints with the Microsoft Kinect for Xbox 360 is its space requirement. For the depth-sensing cameras to function properly, Microsoft recommends a good eight feet between your HDTV/Kinect and your couch/you. That's a lot of space, especially for apartment dwellers like myself.
Nyko might have fixed that problem with the Zoom, a surprisingly simple and affordable Kinect attachment that seriously cuts down on its need for room.
The Zoom is a wide-angle lens attachment that fits over the Kinect, changing how it sees the room. With a wider angle, it can see more laterally, but doesn't have as much depth.
Thank you for the info. My boys have tried it other places but I never have. Our family room is a rectangle and the sofa/tv are on the long sides, making it a short distance between them. I hope they do fix that because there must be a lot of people with rooms like ours.
