Not sure if I should post here or not. DH was just diagnosed with type II. We are local and have been going out whole lives, but have never had to worry about what to eat. Can you do Disney low carb, low sugar, low sodium, low fat? His favorite, the corn dog, is obviously out of the question. :( ant suggestions are appreciated! TIA!

I have a Type II (DH, hereditary - weighs in at 160) and a Type I (DS diagnosed at age 5). Here are a few things that may be helpful:

Meet with a Registered Dietician (RD) or CDE (Certified Diabetes Educator) to help you with the diet. Believe it or not, once you get used to eating well, it's easier and things you once liked are no longer as tasty. In fact, sometimes they are flat out nasty.

Calorie King has a wonderful app that has fat, calorie, & carb counts. Before the days of apps, I carried their book - you may prefer that. My Fitness Pal is good, too, and allows you to track online (free).

As far as Disney, we just do the best we can. It's much easier now to eat well than it was 10 years ago. We try to stick with salads, meat, fruit, and veggies. And yes, if they want the corn dog, they eat it. It's a balancing act. Most of the time, we eat "well." Sometimes, we don't. You should know about how many carbs are recommended each day and do your best to stay within those numbers. Your dietician will help you here.

If he is not already doing so, an exercise program is very helpful. Just a daily walk up the street and back (about 1.5 miles) takes 30 minutes and I can see a difference in my son's numbers throughout the day. It's relaxing and allows us to spend time together.

Best wishes.

Be prepared! With practice and a little learning time it will be easy. There is a learning curve, that why you need to be prepared.

I have been traveling with a diabetic for over 20years now. Timing, food and exercise is important. If it gets out of balance you need to be ready to make the necessary corrections.

It DOES NOT mean you can't do what you want to do. You need to learn how to make it work. That's where the balance comes in.

If this is new to you, like another said, spend time with a diabetic educator. Tell them about your life style. They will give you the information you need, to continue doing all the things you normally do.

They may even help you fit in the corndog!

good luck
