OK, this may be the DUH! question of the week, but here it goes: I have seen some pretty Disneyana pins (LEs of even 500 or less) going for peanuts.

What is the thing about them?

What seems to make them undesirable (obviously!) when compared to park - issued pins of similar and even higher edition numbers?

Disneyana pins are not real Disney made pins.... Unless they are from the "Official Disneyana Convention".. I have a small colletion of Disneyana style pins cause I like them but they are very hard to trade...

Here's the second "D U H!": How can you tell them apart? You can't just go by the copyrights symbol anymore!

Another thing: If they aren't official, why are they on Pinpics, blended with official pins?

Well that is the hard part... If you look at an official Disney pin it will say Disney with the copy right C on the left... If you see it on the right it is not a real Disney pin... Most of the ones you see on Pinpics are what are called Fantasy pins. These are pins while they may look like Disney pins are not. How they get away with it is that Disneyana is not a Disney property... It is in the free domain and can be used by anyone. As for the larger pins with characters on them that will have another sponser like Coke or McDonalds... Those are fake pins and very hard for Disney to stop as Copy Right Laws in other countrys are very different from our own. If you have seen them they say LE to 500... But there are like 10 different colors of these...

While some people do not like them as they are not true disney pins I do like a few of the Disneyana ones. In fact some of them while not "Official" pins are designed by Disney Artists and released at Disney Fun Fairs in CA... Some of these very highly sought after and rare pins... And I also want to point out that not all Disney pins have a Copy Right on the back... Some are on the front and take a while to find... An example is the Holiday Fun Fair pins from DL from last year... These pins had no Copy Right on the back... They are on the front and as you have seen on Diseny's Auction Site they are true Disney pins... I hope this helps a little...

Awesome info!

Heck, I am getting my butt in Pinpics and updating/correcting my wants after this one!
It would be helpful and fair if this information is added to corresponding descriptions of such pins.

What about pins I often see going as CM or older hat pins which only have "Disney" stamped or etched on the back, without the copyrights symbol?

I realize authentic pins will always have the copyrights symbol on the left now, but my question is, do they always have the symbol?

What about Mc Donald's pins, are they authentic?

My DS#2 bought this great Disneyana pin on ebay for about $6. It's a green Mad Hatter's hat with "Disneyana" in white across the crown and a card with "pin/head" stuck in the band. The ebay description said it was an LE of 500.

My son loves this pin. He has been offered all sorts of terrific trades and $$ for it, but he wouldn't part with it. Then, last May, we were in WoD in DTD, and he was trying to negotiate for something very special. He offered this beloved pin and the other trader just made him feel like dirt.

He went on and on about how the pin was not "real Disney" and not tradable, and how my son was "taken in" by someone, sneering the whole time at my son's naivete.

Well, luckily, my son is no worse for the experience. He's been trading long enough to just let it wash over him and not respond.

And, he still loves that pin, and still receives offers for it on a regular basis.

:)
