I am just looking for any tips or advice you would be willing to share about traveling to Disney World with a 2 year old! Must sees, things we definitely can't or shouldn't do, any special things you wish you would've packed but didn't?... Anything at all you can share!!

Oh and we are going in May for his 2nd birthday!

Thanks! :)

last time we went, my boys were 14mo and not quite 3. a stroller was a lifesaver, and the littlest loved ANYTHING with animatronics. Even (especially?) PoTC.

Don't be afraid to take afternoon breaks, and don't try and do anything.

Let your little one run around the Tom Sawyer area to burn off steam.

my son is 2 1/2 and he will be experiencing Disney for the 4th time! Each time has been different, but I can say that you must hit every single slow boat ride. The people mover is a must as well. He just loved it. Being able to see everything - and Buzz over tomorrowland is priceless.
We've just hit the 36" mark, so looking forward to Goofy coaster.
Dumbo was great last time.

Shows were tough earlier in his life, but now I think he will love it. HS has the Disney Jr Live show which looks really cute.

I have been letting him watch some parades and that Disney Jr show on Youtube. He gets so excited to 'watch mickey parade' I am hoping that watching on youtube will make him even more excited to see them live!!

If he likes Characters, then backstage with Mickey in MK is wonderful. Hell get some one on one time with Mickey & Minnie and youll get some great pictures.

If you are a Disney Visa holder, you can do the secret Mickey photo spot in Innoventions. (just bring your visa with you as proof) Youll get longer one on one time and a free 5x7 pic.

My hubby and I are Disney Veterans and we are finally having to change up our Disney style to accommodate our son and ensure he is having a great time. Its so much different to experience Disney as a parent. Watching his face light up........ Its the best thing ever!

We're taking our almost 3 yo daughter in just 17 days and I can't wait! She has been twice before, but she was 9 months and 13 months, so I feel she will enjoy it so much more this time around. My hubby and I are DW vets as well and know we will have to change it up a bit to accommodate our little one. I'm so nervous about packing right now. I'm afraid I will leave something crucial home and won't be able to get it in DW. That's my biggest worry. ugh!

Thanks everyone! I appreciate the tips so far. We will probably take a small umbrella stroller just because I don't want to lug around his giant stroller. Plus he will want in and out a lot I'm sure.

I think he will love the disney jr show...we watch disney jr everyday.

We are just starting to plan! I don't know what all he will be able to ride by then...he is on the short side.

I haven't yet taken a child to Disney world. We have one child and DD will be 2 1/2 when we go in the fall of 2014 (happy dance). Hovever, hubby just got hired as an airline pilot so packing for kids is something that I could have gotten a college degree in by now it feels like.

One thing that I've put together for my daughter, as far as sleeping arrangements go, is a "bed in a bag". If you are flying to DW, this can be a lifesaver on getting through airports with less headache. I got a pack and play for her expressly for travel (about $45), and I have a pack and play matress that I bought off of Amazon, because the pad that comes with the pack and play is only an inch thick and hard as a rock. I had no idea how I would be able to transport the matress without losing valuable luggage space. So I went to a discount store (Ross) and found a $50 extra large rolling duffel that had a lot of external pockets. Lo and behold, when I collapsed the pack n play (Graco Brand), wrapped the extra matress around it, and shoved it all into the duffel bag, IT ACTUALLY FIT! I also put the fitted sheet and an additional padded matress cover over the extra matress before putting it in the duffel. In the external pockets I was able to put a large fleece blanket, a travel cloud b sheep soundmaker, a lovey, binkis, and still have lots of room left for miscellaneous items. This way DD has something familiar to sleep in when we travel, which I know is comfortable for her, and stays clean and protected while travelling, and I dont' have to go to the trouble of renting one (and they are not guaranteed to be available). It also cuts down on that ick factor of using a multi used sleeping place for my baby. Hope that helps!

For me personally, planning for packing is the most crucial thing. I don't enjoy the idea of touring plans, etc b/c part of the fun for our family is seeing what we feel like doing for that day and going with it. However, I take the opposite approach when packing. I am not someone who does well when I can't get something I need easily.

There are a lot of packing checklists on several planning forums across the web that are tailor made for Disney. You can just go down a checklist, which will help you to think of things that you may not have considered you might need. I would never have thought of bringing a rain poncho for example but after reading forums it seems like such a little thing that can go a long way.

Another great idea that I'd heard (since orlando is notorious for having a small unpredictable rain showers) is to bring a collapseable stroller rain cover and use it before going to get on rides. One traveller mentioned using one just in case and when they came back from the ride, theirs was the only stroller that was dry. Keeps the diaper bag and contents beneath dry too.

Other than that I would say read your kiddo. Dont' push them to tackle the whole "world" in a day. If they want to run around chasing a butterfly (something they could do at home for free) let em. Just remember that you can enjoy the fact that you're in the most magical place on earth the whole time, enough for both of you, and don't pressure yourself. It makes the whole trip so much more enjoyable! Hope you have a blast!

I don't mean to rain on your parade, but both of my kids are very small for their age and neither of them could/can have comfortably sleep in a pack and play at 2.5. You may want to consider a different sleeping arrangement. inflatable mattresses have worked well for us because they are low to the ground in case the LO rolls out and they are easy and small to pack.

to OP, we are taking DD right after she turns 3 and some of the things I have been told to remember is to have a plan, but make sure you are flexible. We are planning on going back to our campground (at Fort Wilderness) for a nap every afternoon so the kids can recharge and go back to the park for the evening. I found some great tips and good touring plans here: http://wdwprepschool.com/a-toddler-centered-disney-world-trip-plan/

Hmmm. I've never encountered the problem that you've described. I've also many threads from parents saying that they've used one for their kids even past age three. I guess it just depends on the kiddo.

My two year old was so nervous around the characters the first day. That evening, he picked out an autograph book and entered the park the next day armed with book in hand. It ended up being his favorite thing the entire trip. He met every character available and still loves looking at his book.

I would also take a stroller that reclines. He doesn't always nap at home, but at Disney World, he fell asleep so often in the stroller before we could make it back to the room.

I would just evaluate where your child is closer to the trip. We had every intention of using the pack and play at the resort with our DD (who just turned 2) for the upcoming trip, but she decided to start climbing out of her crib a few months ago and has been in a toddler bed ever since. I read a tip to bring noodles to use as "bumpers" on the sleeper sofa (we're staying DVC). The point of my ramble being, it's great to start making plans, but don't be afraid to let them evolve as your little one grows :thumbsup2

Definitely don't miss....
the Disney Jr show at DHS
Beauty & The Beast on stage
The Seas w/ Nemo and Friends
Kilamanjaro Safaris
Triceratop Spin
Finding Nemo the musical
Festival of the Lion King
Country Bear Jamboree
Fantasyland!!!
The Move It, Shake It, Celebrate it parade at the MK. My kids LOVED IT! If you're in the central hub, they let everyone dance in the streets with the characters, lots of fun!
Character meals...Tusker House, Akershus

We took our son when he was 18 months old. The best advice for you is what people are already saying. Have a plan but know your plan will change. We went back every single day for naps and we didn't take off first thing every morning. We let him usually wake up on his own (unless we had an early morning ADR) and had a day of just hanging at the resort and playing in the pool.

Also, if you do rent a pack and play don't forget to pack your own sheet for it and bring some Lysol/Clorox wipes to wipe it down with. It made me feel a little better.

Have fun though! Whenever my husband and I think about that trip we always smile because even though our son doesn't remember it, we do. Also even though people didn't understand why we were taking him so young, it made so many memories for us that we will never forget and we don't regret it at all!

We set up the resort's pack-n-play (for free! With just extra blankets on top... you are correct, those "mattresses" suck!) for DS when he was 16 months old on our first stay at Disney. That lasted ONE NIGHT before I realized how uncomfortable he was due to the size. Admittedly, he is a tall kid, but I thought for sure it wouldn't be a problem because he wasn't much over a year old. We had to use bedrails on the extra bed for the rest of our trip because he was just too crammed in the PNP. The good thing is that since you now own it, you will be able to try it out with her in it when it is closer to your trip before paying to fly it down or taking space in your car... depending on if you are flying or driving.

I love traveling with my little ones . i think the one thing that sometimes u forget to pack is a dish sponge and dawn soap i have always been traveling with bottles and sippy cups and not to mention the resorts cups need a good wash too :) guess i cant get away from doing the dishes!:rotfl2:

i think i always over pack for them so my advice would be to really think if you will need it. also i always carry a backpack purse when they are young much easier then a purse and a diaper bad

as for must dos i think its what they are into. lots of characters if they like them.

best advice just have fun its great seeing the world through their eyes!

Have a great time! We took our 3 year old on her first Disneyland trip and she slept in the pack n play just fine. She is on the small/ short side as well. Enjoy!

We are going in September with our almost-2-year old (he turns 2 a few days after we check out). In addition to visiting WDW with our other kids when they were toddlers, we also took youngest DS to Hershey Park and Dorney Park last summer just before his 1st birthday. So we have been there done that! We have the same advice as a lot of the previous posters. Don't try to do it all - and watch your toddler for cues they are getting overwhelmed/tired and need a break. Don't rush them through meals to get to another attraction. I know my toddlers always ate better at mealtimes when we let them wind down a little first. Sometimes it can be maddening as your toddler is lingering over their french fries when you have a fastpass that's about to expire, but you'll regret it if you cut their meal short.

Like PP mentioned, you'll figure out what your toddler likes and doesn't likes after the first handful of rides. The slow boat rides were always a big hit with our little ones. Gran Fiesta tour ride in Mexico at Epcot is one we end up doing DOZENS of times each trip because the youngest in the group always falls in love with it. My kids never really cared for the parades - a few minutes and they had enough. All that waiting for a good spot, standing still, no room to move, etc. bleh! So, we actually plan to be in a different area of the parks during parades now.

Also - divide and conquer. Don't just cater to your kids. Yes, we want them to have a great time and have awesome pictures, etc. But it's easier to deal with toddler meltdowns if you get in a few rides YOU want to do too! DH and I split up for a bit at each park - taking turns with a sleeping or cranky toddler/baby so the other could go on the thrill rides.

My final tip: disinfect, sanitize and wipe down everything! I've never been a germaphobe, but one trip to WDW we all got a norovirus type thing. I'm pretty sure it was picked up on the plane based on the timing, and it made its way through our entire family by the time we checked out. So, now I bring Lysol, antibacterial hand gel and we sanitize everything we can in the rooms, and everyone's hands are cleaned after each ride and before every meal and snack. It's not 100% foolproof but it does give me peace of mind knowing we did everything we could to keep germs from ruining a very expensive vacation!
