Disney Wonder September 3, 2012. Seattle to Vancouver 7 night Alaska Cruise!

From our DisBoard standpoint and from the availability of Palo and shore excursions last night, it looks like it might be a quiet cruise; however, when I went into the website last week to look at what rooms were available in our category (06A), there were none available. But I would suspect the verandah cabins would go quicker than insides on an Alaska cruise.

That's true. We upgraded from a 9C to a 7A (navigator's verandah) last month and were offed a GTY, so they must be filling up too.

Hey Mellers! I posted on the main board, so maybe you'll see my question there - but I'm wanting to book the Liarsville excursion with characters and then do the White Pass Railway on our own. I know you did White Pass on your own last year, so here's my question... If we book Liarsville from 8:45am-11:45am will we be able to make the 12:45 train with no problems? Our 5-year old would be absolutely heartbroken if we missed the train somehow. Would this work or should we not take any chances? Thanks for your help!

Hi Jen--if you're back to the ship by 11:45 a.m., you will ABSOLUTELY make it in plenty of time. It took us less than 10 minutes (with my mother having ankle problems and me in a wheelchair) to get to the station.

Well yuck! I just had to move our Palo brunch from Sunday to Tuesday. Based on the Navigators from the Vancouver to Seattle cruise, the kids club is doing "open house" from 9am-12pm on Sunday. So we'd have no place for our son. Why would they do open house during brunch hours? What if we hadn't looked at Navigators (or what if they're wrong?)? Would they charge us the $40 for a brunch we couldn't go to because there was no place to put our child??? :confused3

JennF22 - where did you find the Navigators? I haven't come across them yet and I've been looking through every post that looks like might have them. Help!

I saw those navigators too! I am thinking those will be most like our cruise (more than the sea-sea ones with Victoria) so I am so glad he posted them!

I was thinking that you could check your kids into the side that wasn't having open house. For instance, the lab is under secured programs when the club has open house. Is your DS able to play in the lab?

I saw that after I posted my little rant. But, I'm not sure he'd be comfortable with bigger kids mixed in (or me either). He just turned 5 and has never been in the clubs before. When we were on the Magic in May, my parents were there too. So when we did Palo, he hung out with them. We've broached the subject of the kids clubs with him and got a whiney "but I want to stay with you guys" response. So we're working on that :) I was able to move our 11am from Sunday to Tuesday, so I guess that will be ok. There is a lot less Palo availability on Tuesday though.

Speaking of changing things - based on the reviews of the people who just got back, I think today I'm going to ditch the Disney White Pass Rail with Trail Camp for the Chilkoot Charters Yukon Rail with dog cart. People seem to rave about that! I have to give up the panning for gold, but I think seeing the Yukon Territory, playing with sled dog puppies, and getting a cart ride will be more rewarding. I really can't wait. I hope we get great weather!

That makes sense, it seems hard for a 5 year old to be mixed in with 11-12 year olds. I am glad you were able to switch! I think I would like to try for brunch on a day other than Tracy Arm, for the sole reason that my DH wants to eat the BBQ salmon. ;) So I think we will try for Tuesday or Sunday :woohoo:

Hi everyone, this will be our first cruise ever with my DH and 3 y/o DD. we haven't really plan anything big, so here's to hoping that everything going smoothly. :goodvibes

I am certain all of you will have a wonderful time--we went on last year's Alaska cruise and really enjoyed ourselves.

Welcome!! :cool1: my DS is 3, too! You will all have a ball!

We are definitely getting excited about this cruise!

Things seem very quiet for this cruise, so we also wonder how booked things will end up being. We just can't seem to find many kids. (duh, school will just be starting... as home schoolers we sometimes forget these details!)

This is our first Disney cruise, so we can't book until the 20th here is what we are hoping for, any comments are certainly welcome:

Juneau: Mendenhall Glacier & Whale Quest
Ketchikan: Bear country & wildlife expedition
Skagway: White pass railroad & Skagway streetcar city tour

We will be in Seattle for two nights before the cruise visiting my family in Kirkland. We plan to stay in their area, likely at the Marriott. So, we need a rental car. Does anyone know what our best bet is for dropping off the car and getting to the ship? Is a taxi a ridiculous option? Also, we fly Delta from Vancouver home. Does DCL do the on ship check in of luggage? What is the best choice for getting to the airport? Our flight is at like noon, so time is somewhat important.

We are participating in the FE and are excited about them. I keep hoping to seem some new families join up before I put them together. LOL

Possible thoughts (I live very near Kirkland): Rather than dropping a rental car off at the airport, you might want to try renting from Aero Rent A Car and consider staying at the Silver Cloud Redmond--it has a very nice free breakfast, free laundry, and nice indoor pool for the kiddos. It's not very far from Kirkland at all, and it's right next door to Aero, so returning the car should be easy.

The one thing I would make sure of, regardless of vendor, is that you can return the car on Labor Day, since that's when we will be departing, or if you'll need to make arrangements the day before.

If you wanted to forgo the rental car, or cut down the number of days, the Metro Transit 245 will take you pretty easily from the Silver Cloud into Kirkland, and the stop is close to the hotel. They also have refrigerators and microwaves in the room, and a Trader Joe's close by for snacks and easy-to-heat up meals, if you want to try to save a little money that way. They are known as one of the "go-to" corporate hotels for Microsoft, and if one of your relatives is a Microsoftie, they can get you an extremely good rate. They're a great place for families--we've stayed there before. Even without the Microsoft rate, generally their prices are fairly good.

We are planning to take some form of private transfer from the area to the cruise, and depending upon how many are going from your family, and what time you want to be there, we might have some extra room. If you'd like to join us--DM. If not, try Eastside for Hire, and they will let you know what the flat rate cab fare is from your hotel--that way you can decide what would be your best option. I don't think it will be very expensive that way at all--the hotel is near the bridge, so getting into Seattle is quick. It will probably be about the same cost, or less expensive, than going to the port from the airport, and it will almost certainly be much quicker.

Living in this area as we do, we've never needed to check luggage from the ship, but another DISboards poster mentioned that she did onboard check-in with no problems, so I don't think that would be an issue.

If you're flying out of Vancouver, and have more than two people with you, you'll want to reserve a hired car. Taxis will take no more than two people, and the Disney shuttle may be kind of slow for such an early flight. We used Ride Booker last year to book a ride from Richmond, BC to the port, and were quite happy with it. They took all 5 of us, plus luggage, to the port for quite a bit less than Disney would have.

Do they still do Pirates in Alaska? As in do you all plan to dress up? LOL

They did last year, and my husband dressed up, but unfortunately, his costume got ink on it after we got home, so he won't be dressing up this year. My daughter wore a Mickey pirate temporary tattoo on her cheek, a striped shirt, a shawl done up as a sash and a pirate bandana.

Things seem very quiet for this cruise, so we also wonder how booked things will end up being. We just can't seem to find many kids. (duh, school will just be starting... as home schoolers we sometimes forget these details!)

I'm sorry if I've forgotten the ages of your kids, but you'll probably see a fair number of 16-18 year olds on board. The community colleges have not yet started their year, and Washington State has a program in which students can earn high school and college credits simultaneously if they qualify. The younger students are mostly in school.

Hi there! We have a 5-year old son who will be missing 5 days of Kindergarten for this cruise. He starts August 1st, but he's on year-round and we didn't know what "track" he would be on prior to booking the cruise. Oh well :rolleyes1 How old are your kids?

I keep going back and forth on the Bear Country & Wildlife Expedition. My husband says "no". There are some very bad reviews of it on Trip Advisor and HALs websites. But I've read a couple of good reviews here. We have the Rainforest, Eagles, and Totems thing booked right now. It's half the cost. But I SO want to see bears! I'm sure I'll change my mind at least 6 more times before the cruise! :rotfl: For Skagway we're planning to book the Chilkoot Charters Yukon Bus, Rail, and Dog cart excursion. I haven't done it yet because they want payment upfront and it's a 10% fee to cancel. Juneau we're doing Best of Juneau.

For the rental car in Seattle, National will let you drop off the car at their Downtown Hilton location. They told me, over the phone, from there they have a free shuttle to the port. That's our plan.

Anyone heard anything about the FE? I've been thinking about gifts, but the last list I got had people who aren't on the cruise anymore. :confused3

Hi Mellers,

I forget everyone's everything here, so hard to keep track. But I do remember you mentioning the WA state program. We have lived between Los Angeles and Spokane for several years and our older girls do Running Start. LOL The only child coming on this cruise is our newly 10 year old. I don't expect a large number of playmates, but that is OK. I do keep asking... just in case I find someone before cruise time. LOL I am pretty sure she will me some children on this trip as she is good with younger and older kids as well. And if not, so be it. It is a family vacation after all : )
