My wife and I have cruised several other lines before, but this is our first DCLtrip. I wanted to give other first time
DCL people a heads up on the "port check-in time" process that I learned about today. On other cruise lines, you simply check in when you arrive at the port. If you arrive early, you are on the ship early. If you arrive late, you get on the ship late. Disney does the process entirely different though. Today I went through the online check-in process that you can do from the
Disney cruise page. Click on "planning center" on the right side of the page, and you will need to sign in with your reservation number and birthdate. Next, click on "My online check-in" on the left side of the page. The process goes through several different things including: passport numbers, spending accounts, flight numbers etc. As you complete one section, another section to the right becomes available. One of the final sections is "port arrival time". You actually have to select a 30 minute window in which you will arrive to check in at the ship. The only times that were still available were 2-2:30, 2:30-3 and 3-3:30. Well, this is an issue for us. Our flight arrives at 10:00 AM and we were planning on heading over to the ship right away. So I called up DCL and spoke to a manager. He said that they stagger times to try and keep things flowing smoothly. I asked if I could move into an earlier "closed time" and he said no. I asked what would happen if I arrived early and he said I would like wait on a bench for a lengthy period of time. I asked what would happen if I tipped a few people $20 at the pier to get on earlier, and he said I would like be unsuccessful and would waste my money. I then politely told the manager that this policy was poorly designed and basically stunk, and he thanked me for my feedback. So our family now has four hours to kill we had not planned on needing to kill.

Sigh. Anyways, anybody that has not completed this process needs to try and do it quickly. You will land in the 2:00 check in time with me at the very earliest.
Perhaps everybody else already knew about this process and we simply overlooked it. Its certainly not the end of the world or anything, but it does change our first day quite a bit now. Anyways, I wanted to give any others that were unaware of it a heads up.
*****IMPORTANT UPDATE: I wrote all of this earlier today and have an update. My sister just did this whole online check-in process, and for her all of the early port check-in times were available (except for 11:00). I was very confused why these "closed times" were available for her and not for me, as we booked our trips on the exact same day back in April. The only difference in our schedules is that she is flying in the night before along with my parents. So I went back to my flight information and fibbed

that I was now flying in the night before as well. It worked. All the times were now available to check in (except for 11:00 which appears to really be filled). So Disney now has the incorrect flight times for our family, but we will now not have to waste four hours in LAX with a 5 year old.

We are now scheduled for the 11:30-12:00 check in time. There is some risk that Disney will now not be tracking our real flights, but getting to check in earlier is worth the risk imo. So for those of your flying in the day of the cruise: You can either fib (doesn't that sound so much more polite than calling it a lie) and say you are arriving the day before and get on the ship early, or have Disney track your actual flights and get on the ship from 2:00-3:30. Hopefully this information will be helpful to somebody else.
