Disney Wonder Jan 23, 2011

Any previous cruisers up for answering a few of my many questions? Anything you tell me would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Biggest concern, childcare areas. My son has severe food allergies. Has anyone here had experience? They have said how careful they are and being Disney I believe that. I'd like to know if they ban certain items from child areas or have kids snack separately? Where do they keep his epi-pen? I know how they handle it will be covered with us on board but I'd like to have a better idea! I wish I could answer these better for you. My DD was barely 3yo last time and pretty intimidated and didn't want to stay much so our experiences with the Oceaneer Club were pretty limited. I'm pretty sure I remember a cubby-type system for them to put their shoes so maybe that is where you can keep his epi-pen. I'm sure they would also take it there at the counter where they check you in so you don't have to worry about another kid grabbing it. My DD wasn't there long enough to deal with snacks and meals but I don't recall ever seeing food in there. I would just call DCL and ask. I'm sure these kinds of questions aren't uncommon for them. The first night onboard is a parents night where you can stay as long as you like, check out the place and ask any questions you want to make sure you are completely comfortable with leaving your DS.

Weather, how chilly does it get at night and in the mornings being out in the ocean? Need more than a sweatshirt? In looking at the forecasts for right now, it doesn't look too chilly. I think a sweatshirt would be fine. When you are moving at night, it's more the wind than the cold that may bother you. Deck 9 does a good job of shielding you from the wind whereas decks 4 and 10 will get a lot more.

How much time do little ones actually spend in the oceaneer club each day? I know all kids are different but wondering how people utilize this wonderful place! There is no limit. It's up to you. I think they are open something like 6am to midnight. Assuming our DD wants to go a lot, we will probably check the Navigator every night and plan the times we are going to send her based on activities they have planned that appeal to her and also at times where we may want to do our own activities like wine tasting or getting massages. I think we will send her for one or two hour blocks and then pick her up for lunch, swimming, and then send her back. She may go 2-3 times each day. It's really up to each individual family.

How many suitcases do people end up bringing? I read these HUGE lists of necessities but then I read pack light, kinda confusing! Like Karen said, storage will be your limit and not really a bag quantity limitation imposed by Disney. I recommend getting bags you can stack inside smaller bags and suitcases. The bed rails aren't that high to be able to store the biggest suitcases but you can lift the bed up and slide your bags under and then lower the bag as the boxspring is a little higher. We usually end up storing our largest suitcases upright in the closet. You can probably store two large rollers this way but if you have a lot of gowns to hang, you may not be able to store more than one. What you may have a harder time storing are shoes. We aren't "shoe people" but we each end up bringing formal, athletic, and sandals and they really add up. There are little cubby shelves in the closet but you can't fit much in there.

What are the best on board activities? Are there things available that aren't online? Be sure to read (okay STUDY) the Navigator left in your room each night. You can see some older sample Navigators online to give you an idea. I really like the late night comedy shows, the talks given by Imagineers or other Disney insiders, the Art of Entertainment series (cooking, napkin folding, etc), wine/beer/tequila tasting, and the audience-participation shows. The character meets are really popular too. Be sure you get there early.

How dressed up typically do kids get on formal nights? It really varies. Disney tends to be a lot less strict than other cruiselines. I've seen everything from little tuxes to dark jeans and long-sleeve shirts or Polo shirts.

How do we find/sign up for shuttle service from the ship to the airport after the cruise? We have our transportation set up for our arrival but not our return. I don't know how far you have to go but cabs and shuttles will be lined up outside when you arrive. I'd call Disney or your TA if you want to make sure you have something scheduled. The hard part about calling a cab or shuttle service ahead of time is you don't know exactly what time you are getting off. Even if you do, you don't know how long it's going to take to get through customs and get your bags.

Can we ship items to our room ahead of time? Read that someplace, seemed like a cool idea. Like Karen said, check the FAQ. We've done this before at Port Canaveral and it worked out great.

How many beverages do you guys carry on? Don't want to buy too much and be asked to give up my drinks! I thought I read that you can't check them but you can carry them on with you. We probably won't bring anything this time as we never seem to dent what we bring. Our little mixes never seem very appealing to us compared to trying the new and creative drinks they have available. And since you can get all the soda, tea and filtered water you want, there isn't really incentive to bring these unless you only like non-Coke products. You may already know this but any alcohol you buy in ports will be taken from you when you get back on the ship. They will give it back to you the last night of your sailing so don't wait until then to make your purchases with the intent of enjoying them onboard.

Plenty for now! Thank you to anyone that takes the time to respond. 3 weeks from now we will be cruising away! Getting so excited and just looking for any information you all have, thanks!

You're very welcome. Keep asking away. We look forward to meeting you!

I have enough gifts to add everyone :cool1:

thanks so much for the last minute add! i am sorry i didnt realize the list got going so early! this is our first disney cruise and have just found out about this and it sounds like lots of fun!

so anyone want to me on a last minute list with me? maybe we can be sure to have some items for each other and the others on the big list since they have been so kind to include us!

and what kind of gifts have you guys been making? i better get busy this week on making something cute and creative! thanks so much!

Steve's comments are pretty much what I've experienced as well, but here are my two cents:

I've never seen any food in the club areas. From my understanding, they take the children to the buffet to get food, so I would just instruct the counselors that he is not be taken to lunch and/or given any food. I'd also recommend notifying DCL now of his allergy using the medical information form available online. I'd also suggest speaking with the dining staff on the first night. As for his epi-pen, I'd imagine they'd keep it at the front desk and/or with the supervisor in charge.

Weather, how chilly does it get at night and in the mornings being out in the ocean? Need more than a sweatshirt?
Expect the first night and first sea day and last sea day to be cool to cold. If you like to walk on the open decks, then a jacket or sweatshirt will likely be needed. This is true even in the Caribbean at night. In port, expect highs in the 70s (high 70s in PV and low 70s in Cabo). Others suggest a light jacket for indoors as some of the public spaces can be a bit cool due to air conditioning.
How much time do little ones actually spend in the oceaneer club each day? I know all kids are different but wondering how people utilize this wonderful place!
We had a similar experience as Steve. My son was a week shy of his 3rd birthday and alternated between the club and the nursery. For the spa and Palo, we used the nursery, but use the club at other times. He really enjoyed the slide, but I think he was a bit too young to appreciate large group activities (e.g., how to be a Green Army Man). However, he loved the slide and the toys there. I do think he was a bit intimidated by some of the older kids, and I expect him to do better this year now that he's a year older. His cousins are also going on the two-day cruise with use before the 7-day cruise we're all on, so they'll help acclimate him to the club as well. As for how long, we never kept him in there for more than a couple hours per day, although may do so if he requests it. We tend to do most things with him, expect for those things that we can't (e.g., spa and Palo). As of now, he'll be in there for at least 4 days as we have a spa appointment, tea, brunch, and dinner in Palo. Other than that, it will be his call.

How many suitcases do people end up bringing? I read these HUGE lists of necessities but then I read pack light, kinda confusing!

Most people over pack on clothes. Keep in mind that you can probably wear the same outfit on two nights if you're just wearing it to dinner. Plan to mix and match and you'll be fine. The limitations are really with how much you can carry and the airline you're flying and any associated fees there. As for the suggestions on what to pack, use common sense. Some of the suggestions are over the top in my opinion. The must haves for me beyond normal clothes are two swim suits, power strip, chargers, camera, highlighters, flashlight, some OTC remedies, and small bills for tipping. The rest is what I would normally pack on any vacation. Worse case, there's a Walmart across from the pier in the first port if you really need something and don't want to buy it onboard.

What are the best on board activities? Are there things available that aren't online?
There are a ton of things to do. What we really enjoyed a lot is watching movies in the theater, the shows, and catching a movie on the Ariel view while watching the sunset. My DS also had a blast in the pools. I don't recall doing too much else onboard other than the character greetings, but there are plenty of options listed in the Navigators.

How dressed up typically do kids get on formal nights?
My son will be wearing dark pants and a collared shirt. I don't think there's any great expectations for children. I usually wear a tie, but now leave the coat at home as it's just another bulky item to pack.

How do we find/sign up for shuttle service from the ship to the airport after the cruise? We have our transportation set up for our arrival but not our return.
If you're wanting to use the DCL transfer, you'll find a form in the back of your cruise documents. You'll turn that in onboard and they'll check you in and collect your luggage on the last night if you're with a cooperating airline. Otherwise, your options are cabs and shuttles that will be lined up at the port.

Can we ship items to our room ahead of time? Read that someplace, seemed like a cool idea.
Even if you hear that you can, I wouldn't. Given that this is the first sailing of the Wonder from LA, I'd be fearful that something would go wrong.

How many beverages do you guys carry on? Don't want to buy too much and be asked to give up my drinks!

We'll likely take a bottle of champagne for sail away and a bottle of wine; that's about it. We're not big drinkers and I'd rather have a drink of the day. While I suppose I could make a similar drink in my cabin, it's not worth the hassle of bringing all of the necessary alcohol, mixers, or blender.
Plenty for now! Thank you to anyone that takes the time to respond. 3 weeks from now we will be cruising away! Getting so excited and just looking for any information you all have, thanks!

I have never had to deal with this, but there is a special service form they ask you to complete 30 days prior.

"Special Services Information Form
Notify us of any medical conditions or special needs that the Disney Cruise Line® should be aware of in order to best accommodate the members of your travel party during your vacation. The completed form must be received by Disney Cruise Line® at least 30 days prior to sail date."

I had exchanged emails with Jessica back in November about joining the "Cast of Characters" and the FE exchange list, but I think we fell off the list. To be fair I was having trouble posting to the site then the holidays came up and I just dropped the ball... :confused3 However, we have our cute Fish Extender and want to participate with the latecomers if you'll have us... We're Steve and Cheryl and will be in #5637. Not sure the best way to connect with the other latecomers...

We're "just" retireds with no kids who love to go to Disneyland and Disney World. We've been on Mexican Riviera cruises twice on Carnival (yup, the Splendor last year!) and loved them, so we were over the moon when we were able to book this trip!

We sail and ski. Steve just retired from the Forest Service and I'm a marketing consultant who works as little as possible! We're especially looking forward to meeting Denver and Hamlet (& their families) as we're puppy raisers for Guide Dogs for the Blind in San Rafael and will be losing our baby Keno soon as he will return for "graduate school" to learn his profession.

So looking forward to the cruise, and Jessica deserves a big round of applause :cheer2: for all her wristband and FE organizing efforts!

By the way, we're driving and staying at the Best Western of Long Beach for $160 plus $20 taxes including a week's parking and cruise terminal shuttle both ways. We stayed there once before and thought it was pretty nice. And I heartily recommend "the patch" for seasickness. My doctor told me the dosage was twice what was needed so I cut it in half and share with the hubby. I'm pretty susceptible to seasickness and this has done the job for me. :thumbsup2

In the last week or so I've had several requests for cabins to be added to the FE list. Last week I added bklawyer and 2 additional cabins because at that point several of the people who said they were making/buying extras for late comers had enough left for 2 or 3 more cabins - and those 3 cabins last week fulfilled that. Ryan and I are also to the point where we have purchased for and made our FE gifts and do not have enough for any additional cabins. We had said that the cut-off date for joining the FE was in October unless there were enough people making extras that late comer cabins could be added. At this point I do not believe that there are enough (if any) extras to add additional cabins.

With that said, I will add charlenek421 and dmbkmb (any anyone else who asks) to the list - however - I ask that there is understanding that you may not receive anything as we are now 18 days before a lot of us leave for the cruise(s) and our FE gifts are complete. My recommendation would be to include each other to make sure you are all covered. In fact - I recommend that the 3 cabins from last week plus these 2 new cabins all join together to make at least a group of 5 who can buy from each other - and maybe work from the bottom up the list so that other late comers previously added can also make sure that - as with you - they are also included.

I hope this makes sense and is not coming off the wrong way. We are SO HAPPY to have you all on the cruise and joining the board! :woohoo: Again, I hope you understand that this is a tough situation as we want to include everyone, but this close to the sailing most of us are already done with our shopping - and given the number of late comers - most of us have already depleted our supply of "extras."

Can you give us the name of your son? I would like to make one more gift for him before I put everything away.

My son is Aaron, adults Brian and Charlene #5626, thank you sooooo much! Ive just started getting our gifts together this week, lots of fun!

I appreciate you guys taking the time to answer my many cruise questions! I have filled out the medical form for my son but worry worry worry! Im sure getting there and discussing with them will make me feel better! Awful to hear of kids living in those daycare places! I'm not going to push for more than he can handle, plan to start slow and see how he likes it. Plus it's a family trip and i know there is so much for us to enjoy together! Bringing a jacket for sure, thanks all! Seems like the 50 temps there feel cooler than in the south! Thanks again everyone!

Cheryl & Steve

Welcome Cheryl and Steve, I will add you to my list:banana:

Does anyone know which night is "formal" night? We have Palo on Tuesday (late mommy-daddy dinner!) and I don't know if I need one tux or two?

And before you say it, I'm a total clothes horse. I perform in an Elton John tribute band and I LOVE playing dress up (the show is more fun than playing the music) so I don't mind bringing the oddest of clothing and embarrassing the family. Every night is pirate night at my house! There's some typical Dave pix on my website if anyone wants a laugh. http://dave.netfirms.com (no "www" for some reason). Anyway, thanks for the info if anyone has it!

From what I've read, DCL isn't releasing the info any longer because it can change at the discretion of the captain. However, it was previously posted on here that formal night is the first sea day, Monday the 24th.

Hi Everyone,

I'm sorry I'm not responding to everyone/everything tonight - I'm quickly going out of commission with a headache so its off to bed. Just a couple of quick things right now and I will post to everything else tomorrow! :thumbsup2

Cheryl - I am so, so, so sorry! With school and work and everything it just slipped through somehow - I feel so bad! :( I have added you to the list. It looks like a couple of people are adding all late comers, and hopefully the last few cabins on the list will be sure to hit-up each other rather than from the top of the list down. Again, I am so sorry! I dn't know what happened :confused3

Charlene - I added your guys' names to the list, sorry about that.

Also - someone had asked where the list is. It's located here: https://sites.google.com/site/wonderjan23/home/characters_of_wonder_printable

I did also receive a couple of emails today. I'm sorry that I haven't gotten back to anyone on them, but I will definitely read and respond to them tomorrow after work.

Have a good night everyone - its off to bed for me. :(

Jessica

Don't know if this helps, but when my DH rented a tux from DCL it came with two shirts.

I can accomodate any and all latecomers.

As long as you're on Jessica's FE list, you're getting something from me, like it or not!;)

We should have enough FE gifts for all the NKOTB (New Kids on the Boat) too. Welcome everyone!

I was wondering if anyone had any info on pin trading on the ship. I couldn't find much by searching the boards. I know it's not as common as in the parks but do you see CM's walking around with lanyards? We weren't trading as of our last cruise so I wasn't paying attention.

My Lizzy LOVES to pin trade - and was excited to see that they have pin trading several nights on board the ship - officer trading - she REALLY enjoyed it! and met some good people as well.. so bring your pins and be ready to trade! :)

Andrea in Vegas - who is too excited to sleep already!!!

I, too, will do my best to get our newest additions surprises in their FE's. :cool1::cool1:

Also, in case you haven't seen it: A model vacation on Disney Cruise Line
It looks like it is on the Wonder. Jessica, be careful there are scenes from the Toy Story show:rotfl2: but no sound. :3dglasses But except for the one port they show and the scenes @ Castaway Cay (which I will miss :sad1:) it is a cute little video! popcorn::
Enjoy!

Ryan! Maybe you can find that pin you were looking for? :woohoo::woohoo: We will bring ours or at least some of them. Jeff says it is for Alec but....;)
Steve-Maybe check out some of the Navigators?

Andrea, we can't sleep here much, either. We have been checking our lists so see what we need to get. Jeff thinks we need a new garment bag as our old one broke. We have a room where we are stacking everything we are pulling out for packing. Every time I walk by the door, I just want to grab everything & GO! :drive::jumping1::beach:

Aloha Cruisers of January 23rd MR!!!

I'm on the MR cruise in March and wanted to wish you a great and safe trip!!!

Now the selfish part...:) I look foward to your trip reports and any Navigators you're willing to upload.

I seem to remember that there was pin trading nightly between the two dinners. For some reason, 7:30-8:30 rings a bell. They set up a pin kiosk in the lobby near guest services for purchasing and supposedly pin trading. However, I don't remember seeing any trading going on nor do I remember many CMs having pin collections. That said, I'm not a collector/trader, so I don't tend to notice much in regards to the pins.

If you do the wine tasting onboard, you will receive a pin for it (at least we did last January). They may also offer a pin with purchase in the shops.
